CS Kithure Kindiki has issued a public safety alert on cyclone Hidaya that is expected to hit Kenyan coast anytime from now.
Prof. Kindiki has directed County Security and Intelligence Committees (CSICs) of Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu Counties in collaboration with the Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS) to immediately issue notices and strictly enforce ban on beach activities including fishing, swimming and non-essential transport within Kenya’s territorial waters.
The authorities have also been ordered to evacuate settlements deemed too close to the shoreline effective today Saturday 5.00pm up to and until midnight on Monday, May 6, 2024. The Cyclone Hidaya is expected to have expired by then and its effects contained.
According to the MET department, the Cyclone could generate massive precipitation with strong winds and powerful waves capable of significantly disrupting normal activities within shores of the Indian Ocean as well as human settlements along the Kenyan Coast. Reports already show that it has been felt in the coast lines of Tanzania.
The CS has also added that the cyclone points to the possibility of risk to life and property, hence the precautionary measures so far suggested and being implemented.
