✨The no1 way to get results…. Especially in conservation🐘

Working together! 🤝

Here’s some positive conservation news that showcases just that!!

With support from Global Environment Facility , The Nature Conservancy is working with The Kasempa Conservation Foundation in Zambia to train and deploy forest scouts who come from the local community, to improve wildlife protection in their area.

These two communities and their forest management areas of about 159,850 hectares on the border of Kafue National Park in Zambia have seen how much this collaboration is working. Signs of elephants and other wildlife have been seen in this area for the first time in decades, a promising indication of the benefits of increased management and security.

This result has been a great support and encouragement for these communities to safeguard their environment, and in turn, create strong networks of conserved lands that provide habitats for wildlife; all of which improves the lives of Zambians through income generated and a collaborative approach to conservation.

As we see time and time again, if we want to make an impact, for good things to work (like conservation and protection of wildlife habitat) we need to work together. When we do that, we see results.

I just turned 46. It’s actually the age my mum passed away. It brings deep emotion and a determination to really live life even more to the fullest going forwards.

From this space I want to share a personal message, to each one of you…. those who’ve just joined me, and all who’ve been with me for a long while.

✨Thank you for your time, for following along as I share from my life as a photographer, lifestyle mentor, mother and lover of Nature.

✨Thank you for caring about Nature and the Nature Spaces we have left. The more we spend time in Nature the more we will love it and want to protect it.

✨Thank you for following along with me and my little girls as we live alongside the wonder and beauty of Nature daily. I hope we will keep inspiring you to stay connected with Nature, for your own health and happiness and the planets.

✨and. Thank you for all your lovely birthday wishes!

You mean a lot.

It was once believed that trees were solitary and self-sufficient beings, each one living independently from the others. However, recent studies have revealed that trees are social beings, communicating with each other in a complex and sophisticated network!

Scientists have discovered that trees are connected underground through a network of fungal threads called mycorrhizae. This network allows trees to share nutrients and information with each other, creating a system of mutual support and cooperation. Trees can even recognize their own offspring and send them extra nutrients to help them grow!

Ecologist Suzanne Simard found that forest trees can send chemical signals to each other through the air, warning neighboring trees of impending threats such as insect attacks or drought, allowing them to work together to defend against threats and maintain a healthy ecosystem.

This new understanding of trees challenges the notion of humans as the only intelligent beings. Perhaps we need to expand our definition of intelligence and rethink our relationship with the natural world.

By respecting and nurturing the natural world, we can create a more sustainable and harmonious future!

✨Remember to LOOK UP !🌙

For many of us who witness one, a solar eclipse is one of the most moving experiences on Earth. Watching one from some of the most remote and beautiful corners of the world lends a whole other level.

Kinshasa slowly turned a deep cloudy grey. The birds stopped tweeting, behind the city noise there was a deep quiet. At the time I actually had no idea I was experiencing a solar eclipse, I thought perhaps it was building up to rain. I certainly hadn’t thought to look up. The driver asked if I wanted to pull over to see The Eclipse… what, is one happening now?! 😁

Yes! Africa experienced a solar eclipse on 1 Sept 2016... here's my view from the crazy city of Kinshasa.

Around 31.6 million people live in the path of totality for today’s 2024 solar eclipse, compared to 12 million at the last solar eclipse that crossed the U.S. in 2017, according to NASA.

Magic happens.

Why make early rising a habit? Here’s 4 super reasons!

✨more daylight + golden light (natural mood booster!)
✨more quality time with family, kids or alone
✨time to fully wake up + be more focused
✨experiences you wouldn’t get if you were still in bed!

I’m not a morning person, but on the mornings I do get up early and get this time for myself, I always feel amazing!

🎞️ And then there are mornings like this …🙏🏾Thank you for giving us a morning we will remember for a very long time (and my much needed photography fix!)

🌟Hope this inspires you to wake up just a little earlier … catch the light, have “you” time or just to feel more awake in time for when your day really starts. It’s worth it!

✨Bet you didn’t know this ….

Forests are home to over 80% of terrestrial biodiversity and support the livelihoods of 1.6 billion people globally. They are vital for in our battle to balance climate change, as they absorb nearly 2 billion tons of CO2 annually.

And yet. Each year, around 12 million hectares of forest are lost, mainly because of agricultural production of things like palm oil, beef, soy, timber, and pulp and paper.

I feel helpless to stop this loss. The way these goods are produced needs to change, so it doesn’t lead to more trees being cut down. The smallest thing I can do is to help us remember and increase our awareness
to the choices we have as consumers. eg. Don’t buy any products with palm oil!!

21 March was . Let’s appreciate and commit to safeguarding the forests we have left.

🌟Got a forest near you? Commit to helping protect it. 🌳🌳🌳

Do you remember Sudan, the world’s last male northern white rhino?

Today marks the sixth anniversary since he died.

Reposting words by Ol Pejeta Conservancy:
In his final years, Sudan became a global celebrity and conservation icon, helping raise awareness about the brutality of poaching.

Sudan was the last male northern white rhinoceros on earth — the end of an evolutionary rope that stretched back millions of years.

Although Sudan was the last male, he was not, actually, the last of his kind. He still has two living descendants, both female: Najin, a daughter, and Fatu, a granddaughter. Together, they provide a beacon of hope for the northern whites.

For the past few years, scientists from international consortium have been working to save the northern white rhinos. Recently, the team achieved the world first rhino pregnancy through embryo transfer and the next step will be with a northern white embryo.

I had the honor of photographing Sudan in January 2018, for a global story on his vulnerability, and the looming end to his species. That assignment stands out as one of the most important and precious of my career. Today I’m sharing some of my images from my short time with Sudan.

📷 Featured images 1-5
Final frame: Front cover photo by visionary photographer and filmmaker Ami Vitale Ami Vitale of her award-winning movie Remembering Sudan, which documents the heartbreaking crisis facing the northern white rhinos.

As we remember Sudan today we are full of hope that his legacy will live on and once again northern white rhinos will roam free across the plains of Africa.

✨Can you balance Motherhood and Photography?

I’m very often asked this. It’s a very big question.

Being a mother is hard. Sometimes it feels like an impossible task, some days (many days!) I don’t think I do it very well, at all.

I have 2 little girls under 5, I am a photographer (advocating for protection of Nature!), former Canon Ambassador and I run agency with assignments all over Africa. I teach storytelling and photography for Canon. I mentor for .impacts and 6x6 Global Talent Program. School runs, cooking each meal, laundry, home life. Sometimes I work until 1am, then my littlest wakes and cries every 2 hours till dawn. Sleep deprivation is very real torture. On those days it is hard to function yet I still need to be present, loving and kind to my girls.

Photography is a brutal career, it can consume you trying to be seen, trying to earn a living. Then add motherhood. It’s understandable why the thought of going down this path is daunting for many women.

So I’m here to say - YES ITS HARD, BUT IT IS POSSIBLE, VERY POSSIBLE.

And the reward? The fullest most beautiful deepest love. All the graft and challenges are worth even for just 1 second.

Here are some key ideas, give them a thought if you’re going down this path. I know these have helped me.

✨ Don’t rush your first year with your baby. In my humble opinion, you can’t have both freelance career and new motherhood. Concentrate on home. Career can come back in later.
✨ Start an on-going project outside motherhood during that first year. As a photographer you might choose document your experiences. Write, draw, create, grow, design. Something that gives you meaning.
✨Have good support structures - help with family, friends, house…
✨ Don’t try to do too much. Get one “to do” thing ticked off a day.
✨Time for yourself. Create this in your day, for sanity and balance.

💞A Lovestory for Mother’s Day ~Happy Mother’s Day!

✨When was the last time you had a Sundowner?

Sundowner : noun
plural noun: sundowners

Informal •British

Meaning:
an alcoholic drink taken at sunset.

“Sundowners” are an important part of being on safari. That special golden hour time when you find a view spot preferably with wildlife, kick back with your favorite drink, tuck into some delicious snacks, and soak up enjoy bask bathe quietly absorb … the magic of the sky and nature, breeze and sounds, that is all around you.

If you’ve never had a sundowner I highly recommend you finding a way to getting one (or several) soon!

If it’s been a while since you had a sundowner, here’s your not-so-gentle reminder to get yourself out there and have one!

📷 I shot these images of sundowner drinks on the famous Oloololo Escarpment on the western side of the Mara, for Mara Engai Lodge Mara Engai
The view from this escapement is magnificent, looking over miles of Masai Mara plains as far as the eye can see …. *Stay tuned for my post sharing this view!

You could use more blue in your life!

Did you know the color blue has positive effects on the mind and the body?

Blue represents rest. It can cause the body to produce chemicals that are calming and release feelings of tranquility. In our crazy world these days who wouldn’t want more of that!!

🩵In nature, blue is cooling, it helps with balance and self-expression.

💙Using blue with purpose, you can bring calm and tranquility into your stories, and help bring a little calm to your life 🙂

✨Photographer or not… how does photography still apply to us all?👇

Photography is a great parallel to life. Many things in photography apply in life!

Reflections is a great example. In photography and in life finding reflection give us depth and layers of interest, self-reflection can lead to a fuller life, and finding reflections in our frames can create more unique and powerful images.

Clear reflections are the best. They’re a great reminder: let what others see of us be a clear reflection of who we are. Be authentic. Be real.

A great mind-set to start the new year…. New Year’s resolution?

✨How has the first week of 2024 been for you?
~ Happy New Year one more time!

✨Reasons to be hopeful about our planet’s future🌍 at the end of 2023? Here’s one!👇

Because there are people and places who dedicate their lives to wildlife and nature!

….like wildlife keeper Lekupania at Sarara Camp Sarara Camp in northern Kenya (featured photos),

….and organizations like the Sarara Initiative, a powerful grassroots movement of community-driven conservation across northern Kenya who run a visionary partnership between Sarara, Northern Rangelands Trust , the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary(featured photos) and Conservation International

Together they are protecting Africa’s iconic landscapes, helping communities to benefit from wildlife, maintaining cultural traditions and reliance on nature …. charting a new course for sustainability in East Africa.

✨The unexpected but amazing benefits of….

Close-ups!

Going in close - in photography, writing in detail, looking at our own life in detail - is something we may shy away from or even forget we can use to our benefit.

Closeups tell us that something is important, it changes the pace, focuses our attention, gives us depth.

I use close-ups in my photography to explore perspectives outside of ‘the usual’, to get more intimate. I like the idea that when we look at the closeup we can also use our minds to ‘expand out’, and inspire curiosity of how that same moment might look if we were a little farther away.

📸This selection of images (all by me) are some of my favourites I’ve captured of wildlife close up. How do they make you feel… Intrigue? Wonder?

Each gives a different way to see and feel each animal… and an opportunity to feel even closer to nature.
