Tackling the triple planetary crisis—climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss—requires everyone’s involvement. Governments and civil society cannot solve these issues alone. The private sector plays a key role in driving innovation, developing technologies, and providing resources to address these global challenges.

The agricultural boom of the last decades has helped fight hunger and lift millions out of poverty.

But food systems have also been the greatest driver of biodiversity loss.

Have a look at how non-profits and farmers are using innovation to mitigate these effects: https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/five-ways-innovators-are-making-farming-easier-planet #:~:text=Making%20farms%20pollution%2Dfree&text=UNEP%20is%20working%20with%20the,20%2C000%20tonnes%20of%20plastic%20waste.

Greenhouse gas emissions are at their highest ever levels and 2024 was the warmest year on record. This has led to intensifying climate impacts, from intense wildfires to raging floods.

Early Warning Systems (EWS) are proven cost-effective measures for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. They help save lives, protect livelihoods and safeguard ecosystems in the face of climate-related hazards.

Trees are some of the planet’s most important warehouses of carbon, absorbing it from the air via photosynthesis and storing it in their leaves, roots, and trunks.

Yet, every year, 10 million hectares of forests are cleared by humans—an area equivalent to the size of Portugal. This is devastating for wildlife and the billions of people who rely on forests for food, water, and other essentials.

But the consequences go even further: deforestation releases more than 5.6 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases annually, exceeding the emissions from aviation and shipping combined.

Protecting and restoring forests could cut emissions by 4 gigatonnes annually, making it one of the most impactful nature-based solutions.

A new round of climate pledges this year presents a critical moment for action and experts are urging countries to seize this opportunity to set ambitious targets for ending deforestation and restoring forests.

Lead poisoning is endangering the health of millions in Africa, with children being the most affected.

Numerous cases illustrate the scope of the problem: lead mining in Nigeria, ULAB processing in Senegal, toxic waste in Zambia’s Kabwe region, and pollution from a lead-acid battery smelting plant in Kenya. For these communities, the right to a clean environment depends on effective policies for hazardous waste management.

Speaking on the year ahead, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres amplified the huge opportunity to reverse damage to the environment and build on through renewable energy growth, a commitment to net zero and national plans to cut emissions.

The next round of countries' Nationally Determined Contributions to Climate Action (NDCs), due in early 2025, is a chance for concrete actions to limit global temperature rise to 1.5C: https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/video/why-next-round-climate-pledges-marks-crucial-moment-planet

2024 is likely to be the first calendar year with a global temperature above 1.5°C higher than pre-industrial levels. However, there is still time avoid climate catastrophe if world leaders and governments deliver new national climate action plans this year to limit long-term global temperature rise to 1.5°C.

A new peer-reviewed study published, published in Nature, reveals the true scale of the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline leak, the largest single methane release ever recorded—nearly double some initial estimates.

Led by UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory, a global team of nearly 70 scientists from 30 organizations drew on advanced technologies, including satellites, aircraft, marine systems, and stationary towers.

They found the explosions released up to 485,000 metric tonnes of methane, carrying the same near-term climate impact as over 8 million cars.

But even at this size, the release was equal to just two days’ worth of methane emitted by the global oil and gas industry. This highlights the importance of rapid action to using credible data.

Albania's stunning mountains, rivers, wetlands, and coastal lagoons have driven a significant boost in tourism. However, this growth come with risks to the country's nature, land, and biodiversity.

In response, Albania has strengthened its efforts to protect biodiversity while promoting responsible tourism that benefits both local communities and the environment.

Through partnerships with the UNEP and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the country has significantly expanded its network of protected areas, enhancing ecosystem preservation and building resilience to climate change.

In the twin-island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, farmers are tackling drought with technology.

Thanks to a weather forecasting system developed by the CTCN and partners, which can forecast droughts and predict groundwater availability, farmers not only get weather updates through WhatsApp groups but also visits from so-called extension officers who advise them on when to plant.
