AI is already helping tackle major environmental crises, from tracking sand dredging to mapping methane emissions.

But the rapid expansion of AI comes with a rising environmental footprint, including high energy use, water consumption, electronic waste and unsustainable mineral demand.

At , leaders will explore how to balance AI’s benefits with its planetary costs and advance global solutions to make it sustainable: https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/ai-has-environmental-problem-heres-what-world-can-do-about

One million of the world’s species of plants and animals are threatened with extinction.

From the African elephant to the snow leopard, the pressure humans are putting on biodiversity is staggering. On average, 25% of plant and animal species are threatened with extinction, driven in part by illegal trade and over-exploitation.

This week, countries are meeting to make decisions on CITES, the Convention that helps protect more than 40,900 species of wild animals and plants and regulates their trade.

As heat intensifies, demand for cooling is expected to triple by 2050.

UNEP’s new report shows how a smarter, fairer, sustainable cooling pathway can expand cooling access for billions without doubling emissions.

This matters now more than ever. Rising temperatures are putting billions of people at risk — from families in poorly ventilated homes to outdoor workers and communities already facing extreme heat. Sustainable cooling solutions can save lives, reduce energy costs, protect food and medicine supplies, and cut greenhouse gas emissions at the same time.

The report outlines practical steps countries can take: boosting passive cooling in buildings, improving efficiency standards, phasing down harmful refrigerants, and ensuring vulnerable communities are first in line for support.

Climate change affects us all — but its impacts are not equal. As temperatures rise, existing vulnerabilities deepen, increasing the risks of gender-based violence facing women and girls.

Research shows that every 1°C increase in global temperature is associated with a 4.7% rise in intimate partner violence. This connection underscores why climate action must also be gender-responsive.

As we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, let’s stand together and advance solutions that protect women’s rights, safety and resilience in a warming world.

Across several African countries, a six-year tree-planting and restoration drive supported by UNEP and partners is transforming landscapes and lives.

Once-degraded land is now coming back to life. Nearly 949 hectares have been restored, bringing the return of wildlife, improved soil health, better rainfall patterns, and new economic opportunities for local communities.

As climate impacts intensify, these efforts show what’s possible when is put into action.
