Cecilia Wanjiku: The Brave Girl Who Chose Others Before Herself

As flames tore through Meline Waithera Dormitory at Utumishi Girls Academy on May 28, panic spread and students rushed to escape.

But while many were running from the fire, Cecilia Wanjiku ran towards it.

According to witnesses, the Form Three student heard desperate cries for help from the upper floor as thick smoke engulfed the two-storey building.

Without hesitation, she grabbed a blanket, soaked it in water, and made her way through the flames towards the dormitory cubicles where students were trapped.

Amid the chaos, classmates remember hearing her voice guiding others to safety: β€œStay low, follow me!” One by one, she helped younger students out of danger, shielding them from the falling embers and intense heat.

Despite the growing inferno and the collapse of parts of the building, Cecilia continued searching for those still trapped.

She pushed deeper into the dormitory, determined to save as many lives as possible. Tragically, the fire eventually surrounded her, leaving her with no escape.

Cecilia Wanjiku lost her life while trying to save others.

She was among the 16 students who later succumbed to injuries from the devastating tragedy that has left Gilgil and the nation in mourning.

At just 16 years old, she chose courage over fear and selflessness over survival.

Today, her name is remembered with admiration, gratitude, and prayer a young girl who faced unimaginable danger and became a beacon of hope for others.

Rest in peace, heroine. πŸ•ŠοΈ

Suspected Ebola Case Under Investigation in Nairobi
A possible Ebola case is currently under investigation after a foreign national reportedly sought medical attention at AAR Hospital along Kiambu Road in Nairobi on the night of June 1, 2026.
According to preliminary reports, the patient, said to be a Turkish citizen, arrived at the hospital at around 11:00 p.m. while experiencing symptoms that prompted medical staff to consider Ebola as one of the potential diagnoses.
The individual allegedly requested to leave the facility before laboratory results could be obtained and was reportedly unwilling to remain under observation.
Health authorities from Nairobi County and the relevant Sub-County Public Health Department were informed and have since taken over the matter. Due to the sensitive nature of the case and the patient's decision to leave before confirmation of the diagnosis, security agencies, including the OCS Muthaiga, were notified for guidance.
Samples collected from the patient have been submitted to the National Public Health Laboratory for analysis. Officials are awaiting the results, which will determine whether Ebola can be confirmed or ruled out and guide any necessary public health interventions.
The incident was reported in Roysambu Location, Roysambu Division, Roysambu Sub-County, within Nairobi North Sub-Region.

Lenana School Students Sent Home After Unrest
Students at Lenana School have been dismissed and the institution temporarily closed following an incident of student unrest.
In a notice issued on June 2, 2026, the school's Board of Management and administration announced the decision after disturbances were reported during evening prep sessions. Parents and guardians were requested to collect their sons from the school beginning at 8:00 a.m., with all learners required to leave the premises in the company of a parent, guardian, or an authorized representative.
The school indicated that the temporary closure is intended to restore order and allow for a thorough review of the situation. Details regarding the reopening date and other arrangements will be communicated later.
School management expressed regret for the disruption and thanked parents for their cooperation and support.
