We are on location at Mount Kenya University's botanic garden for a tree planting exercise to mark the International Earth Day.
The garden is home to a collection of more than 200 medicinal plants. It was established in 2006 when the university acquired a 20 acre piece of land along Nairobi Garisa Road in Thika.
The Chairman of Board of Management and also founder, Mt. Kenya University, Prof Gicharu announced additional funding of Ksh3 million to the college's school of pharmacy to accelerate research in medicinal plants this financial year.
He also announced that the university recently received a Ksh110 million grant to undertake a joint program to enhance conservation at the Brakenhurst Forest.
Mt. Kenya University, the chairman added, recently acquired a Ksh10 million VCR machine for Corona testing to supplement the institution's effort in fighting the pandemic.
The Mt. Kenya University Botanic Garden sits on 20 acre piece of land acquired in 2006 at a cost of Ksh60 million. The facility, according to the founder is currently valued at Ksh4 billion. This consists of the college's graduation square and a host of other demonstration sites for its research activities.
