Vybz Kartel’s Lawyer Files Application For His Release

Lawyers representing Vybz Kartel and two of his three co-accused have filed a Habeas Corpus Application in the Supreme Court seeking their release as they await a hearing on whether they will be re-tried for murder next month.The said Application filed on Monday, May 13 will be heard on May 29 and 30.

On whether Kartel and his co-accused Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Andre St. John and Kahira Jones should be re-tried for the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, The Court of Appeal will hear arguments on June 10, 2024.

The Court of Appeal hearing next month will decide on the way forward after hearing arguments for and against a retrial based on law and facts. The hearing comes following the ruling by the Privy Council in March that the men did not receive a fair trial, quashing their murder conviction and ordering that the matter be remitted to the Court of Appeal for a decision.

Vybz Kartel’s Final Appeal Commences Tomorrow

The hearing of the Appeal will commence tomorrow February 14, 2024 to February 15, 2024 by Justices Lord Reed, Lord Lloyd-Jones, Lord Briggs, Lord Burrows, and Lady Simler. The case details shared via the UK Privy Council website are that the Appellants are challenging the March 13, 2014, conviction for the murder of associate Clive “Lizard” Williams.

They inter alia allege that crucial cellphone evidence was improperly obtained and that the trial itself was compromised. The Appellants were all arrested on September 30, 2011, and police seized their cellular telephones. The evidence from the phones taken by Digicel Communications and placed on a CD was heavily relied on during the trial.

Their March 13, 2014 conviction was upheld by the Jamaica Court Of Appeal in April 2020 prompting the four men to move to the Privy Council, the final court of appeal for some Commonwealth nations, including Jamaica, seeking to overturn their life sentences that range from 22 to 32 years before parole.

Vybz Kartel’s Appeal Lawyer Isat Buchanan Suspended For 2 Years

The General Legal Council, the oversight body for lawyers in Jamaica, has suspended attorney Isat Buchanan, the lead defense attorney on Vybz Kartel’s appeal case, for crass comments made towards the country’s Director of Public Prosecutions.

The disciplinary panel of the General Legal Council gave its decision after hearing from Buchanan and his legal representative that he should be suspended for two (2) years.

Buchanan is the lead attorney for Vybz Kartel and instructing counsel on his upcoming Privy Council appeal, which will be heard on Valentine’s Day next year. However, 16 lawyers are working on the trial (for all of the defendants) so his absence is unlikely to significantly affect the case.

ASAP Rocky To Stand Trial In Connection To Alleged Shooting

ASAP Rocky is set to stand trial in January 2024 for allegedly firing a semi-automatic handgun at his former friend ASAP Relli.

The decision was made during a preliminary hearing on Monday, where Judge M.L. Villar found sufficient evidence to proceed with the case. Rocky, who pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault with a firearm, faces charges from the incident dated Nov. 6, 2021.

Rocky’s upcoming trial will take place on Jan. 8, 2024. Relli has also filed a civil suit for assault, battery and emotional distress against Rocky.

Singer Shakira Settles Spanish Tax Fraud Case

Shakira has settled her Spanish tax fraud case right before the trial which was scheduled to begin in Barcelona, Spain, on Monday.

The 46-year-old Colombian singer was being charged with tax fraud allegations amounting to $15.8 million. She was facing an eight-year jail sentence and a $26 million fine if she was found guilty.

According to the sources, under the agreed deal, Shakira will receive a three-year suspended sentence and a fine of $7.6 million. The singer has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Jamaica's final Appellate Court, the Privy Council, granted the incarcerated Dancehall Artiste Adidja 'Vybz Kartel' Palmer an ‘expedited hearing’ regarding his murder conviction appeal.

Isat Buchanan, the attorney representing Vybz Kartel, confirmed the latest development. “The date is confirmed as the 14 and 15 of February 2024, following the granting of an application for expedited hearing,” Buchanan said. “The application was made after Mr Palmer’s health scare when placed in solitary confinement earlier this year,” he added.

It was reported earlier this year by Fox News New York that Kartel's Graves' disease and heart condition were getting worse, and that if he did not get surgery soon, it could be fatal.

Megan Thee Stallion Settles Legal Dispute With Former Label 1501 Certified Entertainment

The rapper and the label have “mutually reached a confidential settlement to resolve their legal differences,” and will “amicably part ways.” Megan had originally filed a lawsuit against the label in 2020 claiming 1501 was preventing her from releasing music. She also accused 1501 Certified Entertainment of fraud, breach of contract, negligent misrepresentation, and more. Her legal team accused the label’s owner of having her sign an unconscionable contract.

Last year, Megan sued 1501 again, accusing the label of refusing to allow her to fulfill the terms of her contract. Megan alleged that, according to 1501, her 2021 release Something for Thee Hotties did not meet the legal definition of an “album,” and, therefore, did not satisfy her contract’s “Minimum Recording Commitment.” 1501 then countersued Megan, claiming she was in breach of contract and insisting that Something for Thee Hotties was not a legitimate album.

The specific terms of the deal including if there was any exchange of money have been kept under wraps.

Tyga and Blac Chyna‘s child support battle rages on, and in the latest development, the “Rack City” rapper is demanding sole custody of their son, King Cairo.

According to newly-filed documents obtained by The Blast on Monday, Tyga wants Chyna to have a “reasonable right of parenting time (visitation) to the party without physical custody,” instead of sharing custody. As far as travel goes, the Last Kings creator also wants to “have written permission from the other parent or party, or a court order, to take the children out of the state of California.”

The move is in response to Blac Chyna filing a petition in the Los Angeles County Superior Court in August, where she requested joint custody of King. She also filed a petition for child support.

American boxing champion Floyd Mayweather announced his support for Israel after Hamas’ surprise attack last weekend, sending aid on his private jet.

“I stand with Israel against the Hamas terrorists. Hamas do not represent the people of Palestine but are a terrorist group that are attacking innocent lives! I stand for all humans and wish for the safe return of all Americans and Israelis and any human that were kidnapped as hostages during these horrific war crimes,” Mayweather said in an Instagram post along with a picture of himself in Jerusalem. He continued: “This is not a time for politics. This is a time for safety first and foremost. God Bless America. God Bless Israel. God Bless humankind.”

Floyd rallied alongside a relief organization in Israel, arranging to send “air Mayweather” to the Middle Eastern country this weekend. His aim is to deliver supplies and aid, including food, water, bulletproof vests for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and civilians.

Tory Lanez Sentenced To 10 Years For Megan Thee Stallion Shooting

Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in jail with 345 days of custody credit by a California judge on Tuesday afternoon, almost eight months after he was found guilty by a jury in late December 2022 for shooting Megan Thee Stallion.

The Canadian rapper was found guilty of felony charges, one count of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, one count of carrying a concealed, loaded, and unregistered firearm, as well as discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner to cause bodily injury in the shooting of Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion in July 2020.

Prosecutors were seeking a 13-year sentence and cited three violations of pre-trial court orders, telling the judge Peterson had “waged a campaign to humiliate and re-traumatize [Megan].” His attorneys asked for him to be sentenced to probation or three years in prison and were seeking probation and mandatory rehab, citing Peterson’s alcohol addiction and childhood trauma.

Tory Lanez has filed a motion for a new trial after being found guilty in the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion.

In documents obtained by Rolling Stone, Lanez’s new lawyers argue that the judge “erroneously allowed” jurors to view an Instagram comment made by Lanez’s account claiming that Megan’s former best friend Kelsey Harris was not the shooter. Lanez’ account replied “That’s not true” on a post by The Shade Room that read “People saying Kelsey shot her.” The filing includes a declaration from Lanez’s content creator, Joshua Farias, who says he was managing Lanez’s Instagram at that point and left the comment.

Lanez’s attorneys allege that the Instagram comment was admitted into evidence mid-trial, which did not give the defense enough time to figure out who wrote the reply. They claim the post amounted to an apparent admission by Tory that Kelsey didn’t fire the gun. The defense’s entire case hinged on claims that Kelsey was the shooter, which she denied during her trial testimony.

Dancehall star Popcaan, who has been with Drake’s OVO Sound since late 2018, says he’ll become a free agent in the near future.

Popcaan revealed this in Crack magazine cover story where he opened up about his music, career, label, and other things happening in the Unruly universe, and one thing was very clear; he will be independent soon. “The label can be weird sometimes. I love the label but I don’t like them,” Poppy said in the interview. “But I’ll be independent soon.”

Drake co-founded OVO Sound in 2012 with producer Noah’ 40′ Shebib and manager Oliver El-Khatib. Over the past decade, the trio grew the label’s roster to include Dvsn, PartyNextDoor, Plaza, Smiley, Baka Not Nice, Majid Jordan, and Roy Woods. Along with 40, there are also Nineteen85, Boi-1da, and other in-house producers.

The superstar rapper announced the big news during her Queen Radio show on Friday, revealing that the new label’s artist roster includes Nana Fofie, Tate Kobang, Rico Danna and London Hill.

“I have a record label now,” Nicki said. “I want to do it right ’cause you know when I get behind an artist, y’all know how I do s**t for people that’s not even signed to me. Imagine what I’ma do for the ones that’s signed.”

She also revealed that Wendy Goldstein would be the president of her label, which reportedly will be under Republic Records. Patty Lauren will work with A&R.

Vybz Kartel Appeal: Privy Council Denied Application For New Evidence

United Kingdom’s Privy Council has rejected Vybz Kartel’s application to introduce fresh evidence into his appeal.

The ruling on Tuesday revealed that Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, had made an application to the Privy Council on November 12, 2021, where he sought to introduce new evidence that his cellphone, which contained damning text and voice messages linking him to the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, had shown signs of tampering while in police custody. His application to “advance additional grounds of appeal” was also denied.

The substantive appeal was filed on November 20, 2020, where Kartel argued several grounds of facts and law that the evidence against him had been tampered with and that he was not given a fair trial. His substantive appeal is still pending before the Privy Council.

The hip-hop mogul in a press conference announced that he is bringing his We The Best label venture to Def Jam. Under the exclusive partnership, he will release his future albums and serve as Global Creative Consultant to Def Jam and UMG’s family of artists worldwide.

The announcement marks a homecoming for Khaled. He and We The Best signed a distribution and marketing deal with Def Jam in 2008, and was named president of Def Jam South in the following year. He would leave the imprint a couple of years later, after We the Best joined Cash Money Records.

In 2016, he and his label would later join Epic Records/Sony, where he released his last five studio albums, including his 2022 effort, God Did.

Quality Control Acquired By HYBE America for $320 Million

The Atlanta-based entertainment company, founded by CEO Pierre “P” Thomas and COO Kevin “Coach K” Lee, has been acquired by HYBE America in a deal valued at $320 million in stock and cash, according to Variety.

QC’s portfolio includes sports, film, television, and music with its popular Quality Control Music label, which is home to Migos, Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, and City Girls, among others. Per the report, the acquisition is part of HYBE’s mission to “build a global entertainment giant rooted in music with interests in other mediums and platforms related to entertainment, lifestyle and culture.” QC will continue its affiliation with Universal Music Group for its music roster.

HYBE America is a South Korean entertainment company whose U.S. portfolio includes SB Projects, management home to Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Quavo, as well as Big Machine Label Group, with country artists Tim McGraw, Thomas Rhett, Rascal Flatts, and Sheryl Crow. HYBE’s current market cap stands at $6.6 billion.

Ne-Yo Finalizes Divorce From Ex-Wife, Ordered To Pay Nearly $2 Million

Ne-Yo and his ex-wife Crystal Renay have finalized their divorce after a tumultuous ending to their marriage. The 43-year-old has been ordered to pay Renay nearly $2 million.

TMZ reported that their settlement included Ne-Yo handing over $1.6 million upfront and Renay taking possession of one of their four Georgia homes. The Grammy winner will cover $20,000 worth of her expenses to officially move into the property. During negotiations, his ex-wife expressed that she will need a new car, which the “So Sick” artist will pay $150,000 for. The singer will maintain possession of their 2022 Bentley Bentayga.

In the case of their three children, they will share joint custody. Ne-Yo will pay $20,000 per month for child support and the children’s school expenses, in addition to another $5,000 in monthly alimony for the next three years. The former couple also agreed not to have any future romantic partners around the children, unless their counterpart provides consent and the new couple is either engaged or married.
