Documentation of Aspergillus Aflatoxin Resistant Groundnuts.

FtMA in collaboration with WFP is supporting smallholder farmers in Homabay and Migori counties with the goal of increasing production, productivity, and marketability of aspergillus aflatoxin resistant groundnuts for improved food security, nutrition, and increased incomes for smallholder farmers. Interventions focus around enhancing seed availability of quality aspergillus resistant groundnut seed varieties through local seed bulking, adoption of climate smart agriculture and agronomic practices, improving quality and volumes aggregated and sold through the farmer service centres (FSCs) and linkages to offtake markets.

DOCUMENTATION OF INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT (IPM) IN NAKURU AND NYANDARUA COUNTIES

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a crucial sustainable farming practice involving all available pest control techniques and subsequent integration of appropriate measures that discourage the development of pest populations. It combines biological, chemical, physical and crop specific (cultural) management strategies and practices to grow healthy crops and minimize the use of pesticides, reducing or minimizing risks posed by pesticides to human health and the environment for sustainable pest management. As part of their commitment to promoting sustainable and environmentally conscious agricultural practices, Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA) trains farmers, emphasizing on Sustainable Agriculture practices. These training encourages the widespread adoption of Sustainable Agriculture practices for improved livelihoods among smallholder farmers through well-coordinated grassroots initiatives led by the Farmer Service Centres (FSCs).

Potato Seed Multiplication Documentation.

Farmer Service Centres (FSCs) have been supported with potato breeders seeds by Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA); they have been trained by KEPHIS on potato seed multiplication. They are multiplying seeds and availing it to farmers. This has eased seed availability and access for SHFs while also creating an income stream for the FSCs.

FtMA invests in a network of FSCs – which act as trusted links to farming communities – to improve access to information, quality inputs, affordable financing, a range of important services, handling and storage solutions and market connections.

Documentation of Potato Seed Multipliers (PSM) in Nyandarua County

Farmer Service Centres (FSCs) have been supported with potato breeders seed; they have been trained by KEPHIS on potato seed multiplication. They will multiply seeds and avail it for sale to farmers. This will ease seed availability and access for smallholder farmers. while also creating an income stream for the FSCs.

FSC have been leading in the access and supply of potato seeds to smallholder farmers.

The PSM initiative is implemented by Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA) through Cereal Growers Association (CGA)

Transparency Auto Worker Cooperative rooted in the energy of youth, has 22 members, and is situated in Nairobi County in Kenya. Born from the collective vision of former automotive engineering students from Eastlands College of Technology, the worker cooperative emerged as a response to the pressing challenge of unemployment - faced by youth in Kenya. The cooperative specialises in various automotive services such as oil changes, diagnostic services, wheel alignment, engine maintenance, bodywork, and electrical repairs.

The programme aim to improve diets and food security and promote agricultural diversification among poor households with young children in Migori and Tharaka Nithi counties.

The target households and schools receive Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato vines such as Kenspot 1, Kenspot 5 and Irene planting materials and support to maximize productivity.

“Our lifestyle has greatly changed after the training by FtMA. We produce a lot of food crops and supply to markets far away from here. For instance, we supply vegetables in Nairobi and sweet potatoes as far as Mombasa. Here, it has become difficult to find bare land that is not in use. People have seen the importance of practicing Sustainable Climate Smart Agriculture practices and we have all delved into farming with all our hearts,” explains Melchizedek.
