Kenya Power has launched a drive to update 7.4 million prepaid meters across the country for free.
This effort is to ensure the meters comply with the Standard Transfer Specification (STS), a global protocol for transferring tokens to prepaid meters.
The deadline for this update is August 31, 2024. If prepaid meters are not updated by then, they will stop accepting tokens.
The 'Update Token Meter Yako' campaign aims to inform customers about the update process.
Kenya Power is using various communication channels to make sure customers understand how to update their meters.
Customers will receive two codes via SMS when they purchase tokens: a Reset Code and an Update Code.
These codes are needed to update the meters, and the process is free for customers.
Kenya Power CEO & MD Joseph Sigor explained that customers should key in the codes in this order;

Kenya Power is also monitoring the update process to resolve any issues quickly.
They are working with stakeholders and consumer organisations to ensure transparency and accountability.

As the country reeled from the aftermath of heavy rains and floods, residents of Laikipia County breathed a sigh of relief with the adoption of a slam da. This is a new flood control technology adopted by the Laikipa CountyGovernment saw some parts prone to flooding spared the devastating effects of the heavy rains.
Slamdam technology, borrowed from the Netherlands, uses synthetic tubes filled with water. The Slamdam is a compact and easily deployable temporary flood defense system, capable of being installed by two people within an hour to cover 100 meters in length with a 50 cm high barrier. Its highly elastic EPDM material allows it to adapt to any surface, easily accommodating bumps. The tubes are used as flowing water barriers to block flooding waters and push them back to their course.
The Slamdamβs innovative design features two interconnected compartments filled with water simultaneously, creating a robust emergency dam. When external water pressure is applied, the stressed compartment rises slightly, allowing the second compartment to provide the necessary counter pressure, effectively resisting high water levels. To set up the Slamdam, unroll it, position it with a 2 cm overlap, fill it with water, and seal the caps, making it ready to act as a water barrier.
Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu, who oversaw the installation of the SLAMdams in Wiyumiririe village in Laikipia North and Rumuruti Town earlier this year in anticipation of heavy rainfall, stated that by adopting this technology, the county has avoided the severe impacts of floods and managed to collect and store over 500,000 liters of water.
βThrough the FLoCCA (Financing Locally Led Climate Change Action) program, we shall be acquiring more slam dams to store water for irrigation. We have been impressed by this technology which is a climate change adaptation measure,β said the governor.

Eight out of 10 Kenyans are opposed to the introduction of new taxes on bread, cooking oil, financial services, motor vehicles and a new levy on environmentally unfriendly products, a new opinion poll has shown.
Additionally, 63 percent of Kenyans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction citing the skyrocketing cost of living (45 percent) and unemployment that has left many families unable to meet their daily needs.
According to the opinion poll conducted by Infotrak Research firm between May 25 and May 29 2024, 77 per cent of Kenyans said the Finance Bill 2024 will not have a positive impact on the economy with a paltry 13 per cent of those interviewed arguing that it will have a positive impact.
An overwhelming 87 per cent of Kenyans are opposed to the introduction of a 16 per cent VAT on bread while 86 per cent are opposed to the introduction of VAT services on financial transactions such as M-PESA.
Other taxes in the Finance Bill that Kenyans rejected include the introduction tax of 2.5 per cent of the value of the motor vehicle (81 per cent), an additional levy on unfriendly products (83 per cent) and a proposal to exempt the disclosure of personal data by data controllers to the taxman (83 per cent).
The Central Region leads at 62 per cent while Eastern at 41 per cent was the lowest in terms of awareness.
Mr Wanyingo also said that a comparison to previous opinion polls conducted in 2023 reveals that high taxes imposed by the government and skyrocketing cost of living have been cited by respondents as a reason for the countryβs wrong trajectory.
In terms of regions that believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, Nairobi accounted for 74 per cent, followed by Eastern 69 per cent and Nyanza 68 per cent. Only 19 per cent of Kenyans believe the country is headed in the right direction with Rift Valley and North Eastern leading at 23 per cent and 20 per cent.
