10 Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Sir Isaac Newton ✍️

1. Isaac Newton and his father carried the same name: Newton was named after his father in his honor who died just a few months before his birth.

2. Newton hated his stepfather: Shortly after Newton’s birth, his mother married another man named Barnabas Smith. The couple had three children together. Newton was never on good terms with his mother and his step-father.

3. Newton was bullied almost every day in school: He was sent to the King’s School for his earlier education in Grantham. He was a shy and quiet kid, which was often why his schoolmates used to bully him. One day the situation went too far for him and he kicked one of his bullies in the stomach.

4. He invented calculus and discovered gravity during the bubonic plague of 1665: He was admitted to Cambridge University for four years on scholarship. The University was closed for two years due to the plague, the time that turned out to be the most productive years of Newton’s life.

5. Newton was a member of the parliament representing Cambridge University between 1689 to 1690 and again from 1701 to 1702. During these periods Newton didn’t contribute much to the parliament. Apparently, he used to remain quiet most of the time during the parliamentary gatherings.

6. Newton believed in observing rather than reading. Even though Isaac Newton was an avid reader and used to spend hours studying in his room, he believed that true discovery happens and knowledge is built more by observations. There’s an incident where he once tried to poke his eye with a needle to see what happens to his vision.

7. Newton was mad about alchemy. He was fascinated by the idea of the philosopher’s stone and conducted several undocumented experiments to make one. He has more writings about alchemy than he has about science.

8. Newton wasn’t really a great teacher. Despite his immense scientific accomplishments, Newton wasn’t much interested in teaching and sharing his id
