AFM is thrilled to support Mombasa County’s initiatives and contribute to the second edition of Mombasa International Film Festival (2-7 December). The festival will take place in various venues: Swahili Pot Hub, Bangladesh Grounds, Little Theatre Club, Fort Jesus.
As part of MIFF, the amazing performance “Taswira ya WaSwahili” will be presented on Thursday 5th of December at 6.30 pm at Alliance française. Entry is free. Drinks and snacks will be offered.
Created to celebrate Kiswahili day 2024, Taswira ya WaSwahili is an artistic collaboration between Mombasa-based Taarab band Lelele Africa and French artist Lionel Lauret (Reunion Island). His art combines history and poetry, the magical and the imaginary. Through this dreamlike installation, the artist invites us into the universe of the East African Coast and highlights and enriches the music of the band Lelele Africa. Founded in 2004 by composer Mbarak Ali Haji, Lelele Africa strives to preserve the traditional style of taarab.
This collaboration has received the support of the Embassy of France via the Creation Africa programme, the Alliances françaises of Mombasa and Nairobi, and the National Museums of Kenya
