Just days into the new year, Kenyans woke up to the devastating news that the Limuru Country Club clubhouse had been destroyed by fire.

The clubhouse, which had stood for over 70 years, was reduced to rubble following a 3:30 a.m. fire, suspected to have been caused by embers escaping from the fireplace in the main bar area.

The incident resulted in extensive damage to the facility.

Established in 1945 by colonial settlers, Limuru Country Club is a private members’ club located 25 kilometers from Nairobi, surrounded by lush tea fields.

It opened its first nine holes in 1949 and expanded to 18 holes in 1952.

On Wednesday, the club management received a compensation payout of Ksh71,143,016 from Britam General Insurance.

The club had taken out a Britam policy covering buildings, plant and machinery, stock in trade, and business furniture.

Limuru Country Club Chairman, John Keru, described the fire as a tragic setback for members, staff, and the wider community.

A field of 115 golfers is set to compete in this year’s NCBA Great Rift Valley Championship at the breathtaking Great Rift Valley Lodge.

The 54-hole stroke play championship, scheduled for Valentine’s weekend (February 14–16), will showcase top golfing talent.

Among the players to watch is defending champion Elvis Muigua, alongside strong contenders such as Daniel Kiragu, Sammy Mulama, and Josphat Rono.

Notably, two female golfers—Kellie Gachaga from Karen Country Club and Diana Mbuba from Royal Nairobi Golf Club—will also be competing.

All participants will play in the first two rounds, after which the top 33 players, including ties, will advance to the final round on February 16, 2025.

Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), through its premium whisky brand Johnnie Walker, has announced a Ksh40 million sponsorship for the 2025 Magical Kenya Open.

As the Official Alcohol Beverage Partner, Johnnie Walker will enhance the tournament experience with premium hospitality, entertainment at the Tournament Village, and exclusive brand engagements.

The sponsorship will also support Kenya Open Golf Limited (KOGL) in organizing logistics and delivering a world-class event.

The 56th edition of the Magical Kenya Open, a key stop on the DP World Tour, will take place from February 20–23, 2025, at the par-71 Muthaiga Golf Club.

It will be preceded by a Pro-Am tournament on February 19.

The event will feature 144 professional golfers competing for a prize purse of $2.5 million (approx. KES 320 million), reaffirming its status as one of Africa’s premier golf tournaments.

Kenya will field eight professional golfers who secured their spots through qualifiers organized by the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK).

They include Njoroge Kibugu, Greg Snow, David Wakhu, Samuel Njoroge, Dismas Indiza, Mohit Mediratta, Riz Charania, and Edwin Mudanyi.

The tournament will also feature top Kenyan amateur golfers, led by Michael Karanga, the 2024 Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) Champion, and John Lejirma, the KAGC Runner-Up.

Others include Strokeplay Champion William Odek, Uganda’s 2024 Matchplay Champion Michael Alunga, Adel Balala, and Shashwat Harish, the top junior qualifier from the NCBA Kenya Invitational 2025 held in January.

Kenya’s top amateur golfer, Michael Karanga, is set for the 2025 Rwanda Open after a solid showing in South Africa, where he finished 8th at the Africa Amateur Championship!

“South Africa was a great experience. I almost brought home the trophy, but it was a valuable learning experience,” Karanga told Golf Score Kenya.

Karanga flies out Tuesday for the Rwanda Open (Feb 12–15) at Kigali Golf Resort & Villas, where he'll compete alongside top professionals and elite amateurs.

The South Africa and Rwanda tournaments serve as crucial preparation for the Magical Kenya Open, set for February 20–23 at Muthaiga Golf Club.

Six Kenyan golfers have made the cut at the ongoing 2025 R&A Africa Amateur Championship in South Africa, with Michael Karanga leading the charge in a tie for second place.

Karanga, who posted rounds of 68 and 70, sits at 6-under-par 138, just two shots behind leader Roelof Craig of South Africa (-8).

Other Kenyan golfers who progressed to the final rounds include:

Kenya’s Michael Karanga continued his strong run at the 2025 R&A Africa Amateur Championship, climbing to a tie for second place after the second round at Leopard Creek Country Club in South Africa.

Karanga, who opened with a 4-under 68 in the first round, carded a 2-under 70 on second day for a total of 138 (-6), joining South Africa’s Bryan Newman in the runner-up position.

They are both two shots behind new leader Roelof Craig of South Africa, who fired another 68 to reach 8-under 136.

The overnight leader, Zimbabwe’s Tanaka Chatora, struggled in the second round, posting a 3-over 75 to drop to sixth place at 4-under 140.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Johndre Ludick (-5) and Jack Buchanan (-5) sit tied for fourth, keeping the leaderboard tightly contested.

A team of elite Kenyan amateur golfers has arrived in South Africa for the second edition of the R&A Africa Amateur Championship, set to take place from February 5–8 at the prestigious Leopard Creek Country Club.

The championship will feature 72 top male golfers from across Africa competing in a 72-hole stroke play format.

Additionally, an invitational event for 21 elite female golfers from the region will be held at the same venue during the championship week.

The winner of the men’s tournament will earn an exemption to compete in the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush in July.

Kenya will be represented by a strong contingent of eight elite amateurs, all selected based on their performance in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).

The team includes Michael Karanga, John Lejirma, Elvis Muigua, Adel Balala, John Kamais, Ebill Omollo, Dennis Maara, and junior golfer Kevin Ayien.

Isaac Makokha has also traveled as an onsite reserve.

Kenya’s presence at the event extends to the women's category, where four talented golfers—Joyce Wanjiru, Bianca Ngecu, Kanana Muthomi, and Channelle Wangari—have been invited to compete in the Africa Amateur Women’s Invitational.

Home player Martin Mengech delivered a stellar performance to claim the Overall Winner title at the NCBA Golf Series held at Nandi Bears Golf Club in Nandi County on Saturday.

Playing off a handicap of 45, Mengech carded an impressive 46 points, securing a well-deserved victory in a tournament that attracted over 150 golfers from across the region, including Kakamega, Kericho, and Eldoret golf clubs.

In the Men’s Category, Boaz Sugut (handicap 21) emerged victorious with 39 points, while Joyce Rotich (handicap 31) dominated the Ladies’ Category, scoring an outstanding 45 points.

Among the juniors, 14-year-old Protus Ambani showcased remarkable skill, scoring 33 points to claim the Junior Category title.
These four—Mengech, Sugut, Rotich, and Ambani—have now secured spots in the Grand Finale, where they will compete against other qualifiers for the ultimate championship title at the end of the year.

Elly Barno of Nandi Bears Club has set his sights on representing Kenya in international golf competitions following his impressive victory at the NCBA Mt. Kenya Championship at Nyeri Golf Club over the weekend.

Barno staged a stunning final-round comeback to clinch the title, overcoming a slow start to finish with a total score of 219 (+3).

His consistent improvement across the three rounds (76-74-69) saw him edge out a competitive field, marking his second victory in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series.

“It’s a great start to the season, and my goal is to play for Team Kenya this year,” Barno told Golf Score Kenya on Monday morning.

Barno’s journey to the top was far from smooth. He opened the tournament with a four-over-par 76, which placed him in a tie for 10th. In the second round, he improved slightly with a two-over-par 74, moving up to seventh.

However, it was on Sunday that he truly stamped his authority, delivering a tournament-low three-under-par 69 to surge to the top and claim the championship.
