Saturday 16th November, 2024: Caritas Marsabit taps into sports to build peace and step up fight against FGM.

Today's games that brought together more than hundred Youths, Women, Men and PWD's from Songa and Badasa involved athletics, sack race, potato race and many others. These games were played at Don Bosco Technical Institute Marsabit.

CARITAS is using sports to unify communities and developing peace-related campaigns and programmes. While engaging in sports, the community champions are also trained to sensitize communities against harmful practices such as FGM.

Adminstration, Coordination of County Affairs and ICT CECM Mr. Max Armara Galwab is set to be awarded a doctorate degree from the prestigious University of Nairobi.

Mr. Galwab is expected to graduate with a PhD in Dryland resource managment. This ceremony will take place at the University of Nairobi grounds on Friday 20th September 2024.

Through her organization, Gargar Charity e.v, Fatuma Nabosu desires to educate her community about the dangers of FGM (Female Ge***al Mutilation) and to provide a safe haven for girls at risk of these practices.

Gargar Charity e.v has established Dakhane primary School in Kargi that will act as a support systems for FGM survivors, offering a counseling, medical assistance, vocational training and a home among other initiatives.

Cosmopolitan award has selected Fatuma and 15 other women (four women per category) based on their exceptional commitment.

Fatuma features in the CONFIDENCE category that honors women who shine despite adversities and challenges in their lives and set an example of resilience and strength for others.

Ahmed Kura of Kenya Drylands Education Fund (KDEF), a Non-Governmental Organization which is visible in Marsabit County, has been named among the top 10 finalists in Africa Education Medal awards.

Africa Education Medal award is the continent's most celebrated education accolade which honours the leaders sparking change across Africa. The award brings together all those striving for an Africa in which every child has access to quality education.

Kura and KDEF have been recognised through their efforts of uplifting thousands of unschooled boys and girls through education. Kura has directed the building of nearly 100 classrooms, dormitories, and other vital infrastructure in areas facing acute scarcity, as well as initiating a mentorship programme sponsoring 217 high school students.

Under the leadership of Kura, KDEF is currently overseeing the construction of the first all-girls high school in the village of Loiyangalani.

INTERNS TURN TO MEMBERS OF THE COUNTY ASSEMBLY AS THEIR STIPENDS DELAY FOR EIGHT MONTHS:

While appearing before the members of Administration, Coordination of County Affairs and ICT Committee, the interns asked the legislators of the Third County Assembly to probe the delay in payment of their stipends and demand response.

"We interns of Marsabit County have selected our representatives from all Wards to bring our outmost displeasure and discontentment to our County Assembly to inquire about our long-standing problem of delay in payment of our stipends despite working hard to discharge our duties as interns of Marsabit County Cohort 2," read part of their letter.

While their 12 months contract is ending on 30th September 2024, the interns have only been paid for four months.

The Chair Hon. Admen Leruk tasked his Marsabit Central Ward counterpart Hon. Jacob Elisha to plan a meeting with the executive in order to address this issue conclusively.

Both the legislators and interns agreed that they will seek audience with the Governor H.E. Hon. Mohamud Ali and the Executive next week so as to further deliberate on the matter and reach solution.

The facility is yet to serve the residents of Leyai years later. Locals still trek to Marsabit to access basic healthcare services.

Construction of Leyai Dispensary was done soon after the advent of devolution in 2013 by the first County Government under the leadership of the former Governor H.E Ambassador Ukur Yattani.

Four Dead and seven injured following a mining well tragedy at Hillo Mining centre in Dabel.
According to Police reports, about two thousand residents from the area entered the site forcibly before the tragedy yesterday.
However, locals report that mining activities can be accessed surreptitiously between the locals and security apparatus at the area, since the banning of the mining activities by the former Interior minister.
Two police officers were also injured following a stand-off between the police and the locals after the tragedy at seven o'clock yesterday evening.
