Former Machakos MP Hon. Victor Munyaka Calls for Action on School Strikes

Machakos, Kenya – Former Machakos Member of Parliament Hon. Victor Munyaka has issued a strong appeal to parents, school administrators, and key stakeholders to address the recent surge in school unrest and arson incidents that have shocked the region.

Speaking on the matter, Hon. Munyaka expressed deep concern about the increasing cases of students burning down their own schools, warning that these actions pose a grave threat to their futures. He emphasized that education is the cornerstone of development and personal growth, using his famous slogan "Kisomo Mbee" (Education First) to remind students and parents alike that education is the key to success.

"It is worrying to see students taking part in such destructive behavior without realizing that their future is at stake. Education is their strongest pillar, and by destroying the very institutions that nurture their growth, they are jeopardizing their own opportunities," said Hon. Munyaka.

He called on parents to take an active role in shaping their children's mindset, urging them to have candid conversations about the importance of staying focused on their studies. "As parents, we must engage our children and guide them, instilling the values of discipline and hard work. Let them understand that by burning schools, they are not only destroying physical structures but also their future."

Additionally, Hon. Munyaka urged school principals, teachers, and all stakeholders in the education sector to address the root causes of the strikes. He encouraged open dialogue with students to better understand their frustrations and to find constructive solutions.

"Our schools must be places of safety and learning. It is the duty of all of us – parents, teachers, and the government – to work together to ensure our children are not led astray," he concluded.

Hon. Munyaka’s wake-up call comes at a critical time when the country is grappling with several incidents of school unrest. His message is a reminder of the need for all involved parties to take responsibility in safeguarding the future of Kenya’s youth through education.

Former Senatorial Aspirant Wakili Bernard Mung’ata Urges Vigilance Amidst School Strikes

Former Machakos senatorial aspirant and active member of various school advisory committees, Wakili Bernard Mung'ata, has issued a call to action for school administrators, parents, and stakeholders to step up vigilance and address the ongoing wave of school unrest in the region.

Speaking in response to a worrying increase in school strikes and the destruction of property in schools such as Katoloni Secondary, Mumbuni Boys, Kyambuko Secondary, Tulila Secondary School in Mwala, and several others, Wakili Mung'ata expressed deep concern over the negative impact these incidents have on both parents and the future of the students. “The burning of schools is not just a burden on parents who are already facing economic challenges, but it is also a reflection of the unrest that exists within the student body. It is discouraging to see the very institutions meant to build futures being torn down by the same hands they are trying to nurture,” he remarked.

Mung’ata urged school administrations and parents to work closely together in identifying the root causes of the unrest and to foster open communication with students. He emphasized that the key to curbing the current wave of strikes lies in understanding the underlying issues behind the students' frustrations. “It is not just about discipline; it is about creating an environment where students feel heard, valued, and supported,” he added.

Addressing students directly, Wakili Mung'ata urged them to remain focused on their education, reminding them that their future is in their own hands and that education is their most valuable asset. “Education is everything in your life,” he said. “No matter the challenges you face, remember that your future depends on the efforts you make today.”

Mung'ata also encouraged local stakeholders and the broader Machakos community to come together in support of these efforts. “We must all take responsibility for the current situation and ensure that our children, who are the future of our nation, remain safe, secure, and engaged in their studies.”

As the region continues to face the ripple effects of school strikes and property destruction, Mung'ata’s call for vigilance and collaboration echoes a growing need for proactive solutions to address the challenges in the education sector.

MUMBUNI BOYS FIRE TRAGEDY
MACHAKOS

Mumbuni Boys High School in Machakos has been facing serious unrest, with two incidents occurring within a short span of time. Today, a dormitory was set on fire, prompting authorities to investigate the cause. . This follows a previous case where students were forced to pay compensation for damages caused during another riot, where windows were broken. The student population, which reaches about 1,600, could be a contributing factor to the school's unrest.

Parents have voiced concerns over being unfairly burdened with financial penalties, such as the recent Ksh 1,500 fine imposed after the earlier riots. They are now demanding that the school's administration handle the situation more equitably and avoid exploiting them financially

The unrest has raised broader concerns about safety and management at the school, as investigations continue to uncover the root causes of the repeated incidents. Authorities are working to address these concerns to restore calm at the institution.

Kyandu Bright Academy Encourages Parental Investment in CBC for Holistic Child Development

Kangundo, Machakos County – September 19, 2024

Kyandu Bright Academy, a leading primary school in Kangundo, is calling on parents and guardians to embrace the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) by actively supporting the development of essential educational facilities. The school’s top management highlighted the pivotal role that modern infrastructure plays in fostering holistic child development under the CBC framework, which emphasizes practical, hands-on learning.

Known for its state-of-the-art science laboratory, Kyandu Bright Academy continues to set a standard for experiential learning in the region. The well-equipped laboratory allows students to engage in experiments, deepening their understanding of scientific concepts—an approach that aligns perfectly with CBC’s focus on competency, creativity, and critical thinking.

Boniface Muindi, the school’s manager, explained the importance of parents supporting the school’s efforts to provide modern learning environments, particularly through the development of science laboratories and other hands-on learning tools.

“CBC is designed to equip our children with practical skills and knowledge that go beyond theoretical learning. At Kyandu Bright Academy, we’ve seen remarkable improvements in our students’ academic performance and comprehension because they are actively engaged in their learning process. They are not just memorizing concepts—they are applying them in real-world contexts,” said Muindi.

He further emphasized that for CBC to be successfully implemented, schools need parental and community support, especially in developing infrastructure. “We urge parents to see these facilities as investments in their children’s futures. Resources such as science laboratories enhance the learning experience, allowing students to better grasp concepts, retain knowledge, and become problem-solvers.”

Kyandu Bright Academy has already seen the fruits of CBC, with students showing improved performance in STEM subjects, as well as other key areas such as innovation, leadership, and teamwork. The school has also implemented co-curricular programs aimed at nurturing talents and life skills, making education more engaging and relevant to today’s world.

The management of Kyandu Bright Academy encourages all stakeholders in education to work together towards the successful rollout of CBC by ensuring schools have the necessary facilities and tools to offer a truly holistic education.

“We are committed to providing a well-rounded, modern education for our students. However, to maximize the benefits of CBC, we need every parent’s active participation and investment in this journey,” Muindi added.

The opening of Piaggio Commercial Vehicles' new branch in Machakos, in partnership with Car and General Company, marks a significant boost to the local tuk-tuk and motorbike services. By providing easier access to vehicles, spare parts, and financial options such as loans, this initiative will greatly benefit tuk-tuk drivers and motorbike operators in Machakos. The branch, strategically located near Machakos Level 5 Hospital on Prison Road, eliminates the need for drivers to travel to far-off places like Nairobi or Kitengela for services.

Key stakeholders like Franklin Kirima, Piaggio's agent, and Jones Musau of Car and General emphasized the company's dedication to supporting local businesses, while local leaders like Joseph Kioko of the Machakos Tuk-Tuk Association and Robert Mbuvi from Mamet Sacco expressed their optimism about the positive impact this branch will have. This move is expected to improve the availability of quality vehicles and spare parts, addressing long-standing issues with substandard local products.

Overall, this development will likely streamline operations for tuk-tuk drivers, improve the local economy, and enhance the overall transportation sector in Machakos.
