Kenya is seeking to tap into international milk markets, with plans to export surplus milk production to countries like DRC and Ethiopia. The country currently produces about 5.2 billion litres of milk annually, which is significantly higher than local demand.

The exports will be facilitated through the Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC), a government-owned dairy processor. This initiative is expected to empower local farmers by expanding the market for their produce.

Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and Micro and Small Enterprises Simon Chelugui highlighted the potential of these export opportunities, stating that countries like DRC, with a population of 96 million, are struggling to meet their milk demand and currently sourcing their milk from France, despite Kenya's proximity and membership in the East African Community (EAC)

To address the challenges associated with increased milk production due to favourable weather conditions, a consultative meeting with stakeholders in the dairy sector will be convened.

This forum will discuss pricing issues, milk collection strategies, and measures to increase milk uptake by processing facilities.

The Pyrethrum Growers Association is urging the Kenyan government to revive the Pyrethrum sector in response to the growing global demand for natural pesticides. The association proposes integrating farmers into County Integrated Plans and establishing an economic bloc to support the industry.

Despite Kenya's favourable agricultural conditions, poverty remains prevalent in rural areas. The country has the potential to regain its former dominance in the global pyrethrum market, accounting for 75% of global production.

Pyrethrum is a potent natural pesticide with numerous applications in pest control. Its ability to be transformed into value-added products and its lack of residual effects make it an environmentally friendly option.

The association's plea coincides with a surge in demand for natural pesticides. The global market for these products is projected to reach $8 billion by 2025.

Kenya has banned avocado exports by sea, effective November 3, 2023. This is to prevent the harvesting and exporting of immature fruits, which have damaged Kenya's reputation in the global avocado market in the past.

The Horticultural Crops Directorate (HCD) found that there were insufficient mature fruits in orchards across the country, and that some exporters had been harvesting and exporting immature fruits.

The HCD has allowed the export of avocados by air, subject to inspection and approval, to allow exporters to ship any ripe avocados that are ready for export.

The HCD has said that it will reopen avocado exports by sea once there is sufficient volume of mature fruit available.
