Antimicrobial Resistance
Poultry Farmers,
Antibiotics used to treat poultry, are they similar for treatment of humans during diagnosis at the hospital?
If so, what are the prudent measures on use of antibiotics to avoid antimicrobial resistance?
Listen to the video by Dr. Zaeituni Akajoroit Mulaa Trans Nzoia County Communicable Diseases Coordinator and Antimicrobial Resistance Focal Person, at Imani Radio and #LearnAnimalHealth on Zoonotic Diseases and Prudent Use of Antibiotics.

TRANSPORTATION OF POULTRY
TRANSPORTATION OF POULTRY
Poultry should be carried in a humane manner by considering the welfare of the birds. The poultry should be inspected by the handler prior to transportation to assess travel fitness and use appropriate containers for transportation of the birds. No transportation of people and live birds in the same vehicle. Clean transport vehicles and bicycles should be used for transportation of poultry and eggs. The issuance of animal movement permits before poultry are allowed to be transported is a priority, but first the health of the birds must be ascertained before permits are issued. Any unfit poultry should not be loaded onto the transport vessel. These may include:
Sick birds
Injured
Weak
Disabled or fatigued

BIOSECURITY
Poultry Farmers,
โHuman health is linked with the health of animals, and Heifer Kenya USAID TRANSFORM project represents an innovative way to protect human health by improving practices related to animal production.โ
As emerging infectious diseases and increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are among our most pressing global health threats. More than 70% of emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic, originating in animals and capable of transmission to humans. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) associated deaths are projected to soar from a current rate of 700,000 to over 10 million annually by 2050โmore than that from cancer and diabetes combined.

Listen to the video by Evans Wanyonyi, Trans Nzoia County Chief Assistant Animal Health Officer at Imani Radio and #LearnAnimalHealth on Poultry Nutrition.
Disease can cause huge losses to poultry farmers in terms of cost of medication, low production, and deaths. What are the common poultry diseases that any poultry farmer should be aware of?
There are different categories of poultry diseases based on causative agents.
1. Bacterial diseases
2. Fungal
3. Virus
4. Parasitic
5. Nutritional

Listen to the video by Dr. Dennis Ogaso Heifer Kenya USAID TRANSFORM Project Livestock Production Officer and #LearnAnimalHealth on Poultry Nutrition.
As a poultry farmer you can improve animal health and productivity through proper feeding that meets daily requirements.
Chickens must get adequate feed with the required essential nutrients and consume balanced feeds, ensuring they get the right type of feeds for their age and physiological needs.
Buy good quality feed from reputable suppliers.
Water is an essential nutrient and is required in greater amounts than any other nutrient.
Use good quality clean water (potable).

To prevent introduction and spread of infectious disease agents within and between the poultry farms. What are the factors as a poultry farmer you must consider when/before constructing your chicken house? Do Fences, Gates, Locks, and Chains play a key role before the design and construction of a chicken house. What about the location with a shade and set up of the chicken house near the main house. Do you reconsider East West orientation and poultry flock stocking density or spacing. What about ventilation and lighting. If you want to learn more, Please listen to advise from Subject Matter Specialists Dr. Dennis Ogaso Heifer Kenya USAID TRANSFORM Project Livestock Production Officer and Evans Wanyonyi Trans Nzoia County Chief Assistant Animal Health Officer during a discussion held this week on Thursday from 8:00AM-9:00AM.

Why is it important to construct a chicken house?

USAID TRANSFORM PROJECT
Despite all our efforts to keep our birds healthy through good husbandry practices and good biosecurity, it is inevitable that at some point a disease problem will occur on your farm. When this happens, many producers immediately begin to medicate their birds with an antibiotic in the hope that this will restore the birds to a healthy state. Improper use of antibiotics in poultry has been linked to drug resistance in pathogens affecting humans. Use antibiotics only when medically necessary to alleviate or avoid pain and suffering in consultation with the veterinarian or professionally qualified person. Together we can TRANSFORM our poultry sourced foods and increase income for poultry farmers.
As human health is linked to animal health, the USAID TRANSFORM Project in Kenya represents an innovative way to protect human health. We need poultry farmers in Kenya to adopt biosecurity measures, understand antimicrobial resistance and good farm management practices. Dr. Dennis Ogaso Heifer Kenya USAID TRANSFORM Project Livestock Production Officer and Evans Wanyonyi Trans Nzoia County Chief Assistant Animal Health Officer were present during the discussion as Subject Matter Specialists during the Live talk show at Imani Radio, this week on Thursday, 28th September 2023 from 8:00am. The topic of discussion was Poultry Biosecurity.
