KITALE:NAMANJALALA ALLUMNI COME TOGETHER,PUSH FOR GIRL READMISSION TO SCHOOL.
Namanjalala Secondary School in Kwanza subcounty is set to revert to a mixed school after consultations and approval by key stakeholders.
On Saturday, while at Superbreak Hotel in Kitale, alumni of the school made a major decision by signing a petition to have girls readmitted to the institution, which was established by the community.
The meeting was led by alumni officials Stanley Siakilo (Chairperson), Caroline Shimunzali (Vice Chairperson), Nicholas Wamalwa (Finance), and Lucy Namwenya (Secretary).
Members unanimously supported the proposal.
The alumni argued that girls were phased out of the school several years ago without an alternative being provided.
They noted that no public participation was conducted before the decision was made.
Simon Mutali, who presented the petition to members for approval, said the current school leadership also confirmed that due process was not followed when girls were removed.
“If proper procedures were not followed to phase out girls, then the action was illegal. Legally, the school remains a mixed school, and girls should be readmitted immediately,” said Nicholas Wamalwa.
Oscar Wafula, who will jointly present the petition with Mutali to the relevant authorities, said girls in the area are forced to travel long distances to access education, exposing them to safety risks.
The decision was reached during the alumni’s first ever get together since the association was formed.
The event was one of its kind, full of excitement, colour, and celebration.
Members enjoyed delicious meals, including kuku kienyeji, ugali, rice, mutton, fish, and a variety of drinks.
More than thirty members attended the event, representing hundreds of alumni who were unable to attend.
Members also discussed welfare matters.
Emmanuel Makheti proposed a monthly contribution to an alumni welfare kitty and increased support for members who may lose close family members.
The proposal was unanimously approved.
Other attendees included Caleb Khisa, who chaired the party committee, Topister Agamera, Ezra Korir, and others.
The alumni agreed to hold their next meeting in December next year.
