From New Years Day temperatures will drop well down for most areas as very cold Arctic Air pushes down over Ireland.

As we begin the new year temperatures will be well down and possibly down to freezing during the day in many parts and nighttime dropping to -7°C or -8°C, possibly lower locally!

Snow is also forecast with the highest risk likely in the north and north west of the country as showers push in from the Atlantic.

Uncertainty on how long this cold air stays over Ireland as we go into the week beginning 5th January so I will keep you up to date!

A blast of very cold air is forecast for Ireland as we enter the new year!

Air from the Arctic will establish over Ireland and this will make it very cold! As much as 10 or 11°C below average!

Yes it is 'winter' but this artic air will make it very cold and temperatures could drop as low as -10°C based on this evenings ECMWF model.... this would be well below the 'usual winter'

There is a risk of snow also but details remain very unclear on this!

For now just prepare and make sure you have heating oil, gas etc.

The charts are hinting at a freezing start to the new year!

The ECMWF is forecasting very cold artic air being pushed down over Ireland bringing temperatures well below average!

This could well be a fairly prolonged cold spell, Still a bit away so time for some change but the new year is looking very cold!
