Gambia has taken steps towards lifting a ban on female circumcision, a move that could make it the first country in the world to reverse legal protections against the practice for millions of women and girls.

Politicians in the West African nation’s parliament voted 42 to four on Monday to advance the controversial bill, which would repeal a landmark 2015 ban on female ge***al mutilation (FGM) that made the practice punishable by up to three years in prison.

President William Ruto on Tuesday assented to the Affordable Housing Bill after it was passed by Parliament. This now means that Kenyans will have to part with a 1.5 percent tax housing levy from both the employer and the employee, which will take effect at the end of the month.

Parliament approved the controversial bill that was vehemently opposed by Opposition lawmakers. The Azimio lawmakers termed the legislation illegal and unconstitutional.

Police have initiated an investigation into the deaths of two high school students who were among three suspected robbers burnt to death in Kisumu on Tuesday, accused of motorbike theft.

Boda boda operators cornered the three in Kisumu’s Manyatta estate and es**rted them to an open field where a mob descended upon them.

The mob accused the suspects of robbing a rider of his motorbike on Monday night.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has ordered the immediate closure of gas plants operating in residential areas across the county, citing safety concerns following the recent explosion in Embakasi. Governor Sakaja directed sub-county officials to strictly enforce the closure. He warned against negligence and vowed to hold accountable any owners found operating illegally. He urged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to gas businesses. The explosion, which claimed six lives and injured over 300 people, led to the arrest of the gas facility owner and three NEMA officials. A manhunt has been initiated for two additional NEMA officials and two drivers implicated in the incident.

Irate youths, believed to be allied to ODM party leader Raila Odinga, tore and burnt UDA merchandise. The items were destroyed during violence that erupted between UDA and ODM supporters over the ownership of Ofafa Memorial Hall in Kisumu
