A ‘fundi’ is a Swahili name for skilled man/woman power. In East Africa, ‘fundi’s’ are known to be creative in making homegrown solutions for home based problems. Kenya’s capital Nairobi is known to be very resilient and fond with ‘fundis’ mostly found in the capital’s downtown and industrial areas. It being a trade adopted largely by the masses that predominantly come from the so-called proletariat, it suffers from the image problem hence only attracting a majority few that work to earn a living.
This has been so since the last decade.
The new decade has seen a surge in the craftsmanship with added excellence and oomph/zeal for business, leading to a very competitive business environment and an atmosphere saturated with creativity. Though there’s a huge dependence on western or overseas designs, the copy and paste culture sort of has evened the ground for what was predominantly an enclave of the ‘white and black’ people of overseas. History though, traces the origin to be in Prehistoric Egypt, Africa.
It is for this reason www.ufundiwambao.com was birthed. To tell the tale of the fundis that make your home, office and any wood related product. To engage the carpenters along with their clients on both the Local and International matters affecting the trade e.g. Climate Change and it’s necessitated factors. The website is as well very east African friendly as the stories and tales told centre around the regions craft, it’s history and challenging the carpenters of today to design for the future along with the SDGs.
