Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has called for the formation of a special police unit within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to deal with rising cases of femicide in the country.
Waiguru said the unit within the existing structure of DCI will help in probing and stopping the ongoing killings of women in the country.
While terming the femicide as the most extreme manifestation of violence against women, the Governor however said a long term solution to the killings of women and girls must be found.
She said the widely-reported discovery of killings of women across the country are shocking and highlighted an ever-worsening national femicide crisis.
Speaking at St. Mary’s ACK Church Ngariama in Gichugu Sub-County, during the thanksgiving service for the area MCA and County assembly Majority leader Daniel Muriithi Kibinga, the Governor said all government agencies must act fast to prevent further escalation of the killings.
“We thank the President because he has taken some action and we are also asking for a long term solution to these issues and a comprehensive assessment of what going on in our society needs. The cause of these killings needs to be looked at so that we can reduce cases of femicide and gender cased violence,” she said.
Waiguru said as Kenya marks the 16 days of gender activism, the country should not be witnessing an escalation of femicide or gender based violence and called for concerted effort to reverse the trend.
The Governor said other players in the justice sector also needs to create special units to deal with the matter so as to ensure justice for the victims.
While condemning the violent acts, Waiguru asked police to act fast and bring culprits to book.
“Gender-based violence has no place in our society, we are hoping during those 16 days of activism this coming week, we will have proposals and solutions that will give us a comprehensive plan that will provide us lasting solution to the femicide and gender-bas
Traders at Kagio town in Kirinyaga County have endorsed the planned construction of an ultra-modern market to end congestion at the fresh produce facility. The two storey building is being put up by the County Government in collaboration with the National Government under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP).
Speaking during a public participation forum at the market, the traders said expansion of the facility was long overdue and lauded efforts by the County Government to create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.
Mary Nyawira, a potato trader at the market, said the proposed expansion of Kagio fresh produce market as it will help end congestion and create a conducive environment for business. She said the population of traders at the old facility has grown big and the market can no longer accommodate all inside therefore forcing some to display their wares outside.
“This expansion is long overdue, the old market has served as well but it can no longer accommodate all of us. We want to laud our Governor Waiguru for her effort to ensure we have a conducive environment for business,” she said.
Trade and Industrialization Calbert Njeru said the proposed market is expected to serve an additional 1000 traders. Njeru said the public participation forum was necessary so as to buy in the support and suggestion from the traders who will be the end user.
“Our Governor Anne Waiguru has successfully lobbied for the construction of another market here and therefore that is why we are gathering opinion from the traders on how they would want the market to be designed,” he said.
Kagio town boasts three other markets built during Governor Waiguru’s tenure among them; Kagio Cereals market, Fresh Produce market and Kagio Cloths Market.
Governor Anne Waiguru says 11 markets are being constructed in Kirinyaga under the ESP initiative with construction work for Mukarara, Kimbimbi and Kibingoti markets having already started.

The County Government of Kirinyaga has rolled out a massive livestock vaccination drive against Lumpy Skin Disease.
The exercise that is being undertaken by the county’s veterinary department aims at immunizing the local livestock population and targets around 80,000 head of cattle.
It is part of an elaborate program by Governor Anne Waiguru to enhance livestock production especially in the dairy sector. Through Wezesha Kirinyaga program, dairy farmers in the county have benefitted from subsidized livestock feeds, Artificial Insemination (A.I.) services, livestock feeds production equipment, milk processing equipment, training as well as marketing opportunities.
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Livestock, Veterinary and Fisheries, Dr. John Gachara, said that the ongoing vaccination campaign is the first cycle in the current financial year.
“We normally have two vaccination cycles in every financial year to ensure that we control livestock diseases and vectors. We had earlier on undertaken livestock disease control campaigns whereby we held about 60 farmers training barazas across the county.” Said the CECM, urging all farmers to ensure their animals are vaccinated during the one-month-long exercise expected to end on 16th November.
According to World Organization for Animal Health, Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is a highly infectious disease of cattle characterized by fever, nodules on the skin, mucous membranes and internal organs, emaciation, enlarged lymph nodes, oedema of the skin, and sometimes death.

Farmers in Mwea Irrigation Scheme have been trained on production of quality seeds and use certified seeds to increase their yield which would ensure that the country is food secure.
The training conducted by Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation in partnership with The Korean Programme for International Co-operation in Agriculture Technology (KOPIA) will equip the farmers with skills, knowledge, and information required to produce quality rice seeds.
Dr Ruth Musila, the director Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) Mwea,
said studies had shown that use of certified seeds would significantly impact the yield of crops especially cereals.
Speaking in KALRO Mwea Research Centre during the workshop, she said inadequate certified seedlings have forced farmers in the country to use farm saved seeds which have impacted negatively on the harvest.
“Farmers have been using farm saved seeds, which usually affect production. That is seeds that are grown, harvested and planted again. The output is less. Certified seeds have a high germination percentage, free from pests and diseases with increased yield of up to 25% ,” she said
Kim Jong, KOPIA Kenya Director, explained that the programme aims to develop technology for selecting varieties, transplanting, management of weeds and diseases and drying rice given most farmers currently dry their rice on grounds along the roads.
Dr Lusike Wasilwa, Director Crop Systems at Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) said the training will target over 500 Mwea rice seeds producers in different phases.
She noted the per capita consumption of rice in Kenya has doubled and Kenya currently cannot produce enough rice to meet its domestic demands.
Farmers benefiting from the training praised the initiative, noting that the information gained offers a promising alternative way of producing quality seeds and adoption of technology in the farms. Francis Njoroge, seasoned r

With the rising political temperature in the country, hundreds of women from Kirinyaga County have joined other women across the county to add weight into the deputy president's position succession politics.
The women drawn from different wards have asked the President to consider having a woman deputise him if the impeachment motion against the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua goes through.
Led by Khadija Wanjiru, the women said that they support Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru to deputise the president, saying that her performance track record speaks volumes since her time serving in the Devolution ministry.
“We have our back-up plan which is Governor Anne Waiguru, whose track record has been exceptional. As a county we have reaped the best from devolution courtesy of governor Waiguru. We don’t want just a woman, but we want a women who can deliver. That woman is Waiguru and we are giving her to Kenyans” said Khadija Wanjiru.
Wanjiru's sentiments were echoed by Mary Nyawira, saying that it's time to have a woman in the top leadership position.
The women were speaking in Kutus on Tuesday and have called on President William Ruto to rally behind a woman, saying the time was right to have a woman deputy President after missing the position during the 2022 General Elections.
Since Deputy President Gachagua’s impeachment process commenced, there have been calls to replace him with a candidate from the Mountain region, with intense lobbying by women across the country to have woman appointed to the position.
