God speaks to us and says, “As I live,” “I have NO PLEASURE in the DEATH of the WICKED; but that the wicked TURN from his way and LIVE.” Ezekiel 33:11.

To our MERCIFUL God, the act of PUNISHMENT is a STRANGE ACT.

The Bible says in
Isaiah 28:21
For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, He shall be WROTH as in the valley of Gibeon, that He may do His work, His STRANGE WORK; and bring to pass His act, His STRANGE ACT.

We read
Job 31:3
Is not DESTRUCTION to the WICKED? and a STRANGE PUNISHMENT to the workers of iniquity?

We see that the destruction of the wicked is a STRANGE work to God. We have read that He desires the wicked to turn from their wicked ways and live.

While Jesus was speaking to Nicodemus, He said
“For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world THROUGH HIM might be SAVED.” John 3:17

God is offering humanity SALVATION THROUGH JESUS. However, men are inclined to abuse the long-suffering of God, to ABUSE His MERCY. But a time will come when He will allow the wicked to reap the full measure of their inquity. Those who remain hardened in sin are CUT OFF from EXISTENCE as we covered in previous episodes.

We read
Nahum 1:3
The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will NOT at all ACQUIT the WICKED.

The character of God is declared in
Exodus 34:6, 7
“The LORD God, MERCIFUL and GRACIOUS, LONG-SUFFERING, and abundant in GOODNESS and TRUTH, Keeping MERCY for thousands, FORGIVING iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by NO means CLEAR the GUILTY...”

Brothers and Sisters, the act of PUNISHMENT is indeed a STRANGE ACT to our merciful God, but He will still perform it to vindicate His JUSTICE. His MERCY does NOT do away with His JUSTICE. The proof that God's PROMISES of BLESSING and MERCY are true, is also proof that His WARNINGS and THREATENINGS of JUSTICE are TRUE.

Finally, we'll read
Isaiah 55:6, 7
6 Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near:
7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him RETURN unto the LORD, and He will have MERCY upon him; and to our God, for He will ABUNDANTLY PARDON.

The burden of guilt of one sinner is itself unbearable, yet Jesus, who was without sin, was strengthened to bear the sins of the whole world. Jesus bore the inquity of the BILLIONS making up those who had lived, those who lived, and those who should live in this world.

The Bible says in
Isaiah 53:6
ALL we like sheep have GONE ASTRAY; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on Him the INIQUITY of US ALL.

And as every man is rewarded according to his works, Jesus suffered IN PROPORTION to the great burden of guilt, the great weight of sin of the world's population laid upon Him.

We read in
Isaiah 53:7
He was OPPRESSED, and He was AFFLICTED, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth.

In our behalf, Jesus suffered EXTREME torture of mind and body so that ALL who come to Him can find life. He opened a way for us to escape the torments of the Lake of Fire which lead to complete destruction, that is, the second death.

All who refuse the freely offered blessings, which cost the life of the Son of God, are left to receive the wages of sin, which is death.

Jesus says in
John 5:40
And ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life.

While Jesus FREELY offers LIFE to the world, many are rejecting to come to Him.

Those who turn from His salvation, and REJECT His offered mercy will suffer agony and torments on their own account. But the righteous shall be rewarded with eternal life.

We read in
Matthew 25:41
Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting FIRE, PREPARED for the DEVIL and HIS ANGELS:

The Lake of Fire was NOT prepared for human beings. It was prepared for the devil and his angels. And remember we covered in Episode 2 that this Eternal Fire comes to an end when it fully accomplishes its purpose.

We still read in
Matthew 8:28, 29
28 When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two DEMON-POSSESSED men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. 29 And suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to TORMENT us BEFORE the TIME?”

We see that the agony and torments of a burning hell were not meant for mankind, but for the devil and his angels. Our loving God therefore gave His Son, that humanity might come to Him and have life.

Satan, who is man's enemy, pretends to be a friend. He entices us to sin, and to stay away from Jesus so that we finally end up with him and his angels in the Lake of Fire.

We read
John 11:48
If we let Him thus alone, ALL MEN will BELIEVE on HIM: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

We see that Satan can use people to prevent us from believing in Jesus. Do not hesitate to come to Jesus because of difficulties or obstacles. Pray, study His Word, believe, and obey. Jesus will not fail you.

Let us read
Matthew 13:40-42
40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; SO SHALL IT BE in the END of this world.
41 The Son of man shall send forth His angels, and they shall gather OUT of His kingdom ALL things that OFFEND, and THEM which do INIQUITY;
42 And shall cast them into a FURNACE of FIRE: there shall be WAILING and gnashing of teeth.

We saw that Jesus suffered agony and torture of mind and body in proportion to the burden of the world's iniquity. In the same way, every sinner who rejects His mercy, will finally suffer intensity of agony, and torment in the Lake of Fire, in proportion to his own sins.

As much as EVERY SIN is GREAT in the sight of God who is holy, each sin is of different MAGNITUDE. The devil is the greatest of all sinners. As Jesus was addressing the leaders of Israel who were rejecting Him, He said in

John 8:44
Ye are of your FATHER the DEVIL, and the LUSTS of your FATHER ye will do. He was a MURDERER from the BEGINNING, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a LIAR, and the FATHER OF IT.

Satan is the father of lies, the father and beginning of sin.

The punishment of all the wicked is still mentioned in
Malachi 4:1
For, behold, the day cometh, that shall BURN as an oven; and ALL the PROUD, yea, and ALL that do WICKEDLY, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall BURN THEM UP, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither ROOT nor BRANCH.

When you study plants and germination, you will realise that the root is usually the first part of a plant to grow. Just as the root is the oldest, hardest, and strongest part of every large plant, Satan is represented as the ROOT of all the wicked. The rest are represented as BRANCHES.

As they are burned in the fire, root and branch as we have read in Malachi, the most hardened in sin suffer GREATER INTENSITY of agony and torment, and LONGER DURATION in the Lake of Fire. When God's Unquenchable Fire accomplishes its purpose, it comes to an end as we covered in Episodes 2 and 3, that the wicked are turned to ASHES.

Malachi 4:3
And ye shall tread down the WICKED; for they shall be ASHES under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

We read
Matthew 16:27
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of His Father with His angels; and then He shall reward every man according to his works.

Again, Jesus says in
Revelation 22:12
And, behold, I come quickly; and My REWARD is with Me, to give every man ACCORDING as his WORK shall be.

Our loving God created this world PERFECT. "And God saw EVERY thing that He had made, and, behold, it was VERY GOOD." Genesis 1:31

But the entrance of SIN, which is the transgression of God's Law, brought DEATH, PAIN, SUFFERING and SORROW to our world.

We see in the scriptures, that God plans to bring a FINAL END to SIN and its RESULTS. He plans to bring AN END to death, pain, suffering and sorrow.

Psalms 37:9-10
9 For EVILDOERS shall be CUT OFF: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.
10 For yet a little while, and the WICKED SHALL NOT BE: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

We see that those who wait upon the Lord will be the ones who finally inherit the earth, and everlasting life. However, those who cling to sin will be cut off from existence. We thank God for Jesus who freely washes us from sin, and gives us His righteousness.

The same fate of the wicked is still mentioned in
Obadiah 1:16
For as ye have drunk upon My holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they SHALL BE AS THOUGH THEY HAD NOT BEEN.

The sure word of prophecy tells us in advance, of a time when the wicked will no longer be in existence; a time when only those who surrender themselves to God completely inherit the earth.

We read,
Matthew 7:13, 14
13 Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to DESTRUCTION, and there are MANY who go in by it.
14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to LIFE, and there are FEW who find it.

From what we have read so far, we see that the wicked are DESTROYED completely. They are not preserved in torments without end. We have read that the way of sin leads to DESTRUCTION. Jesus invites us to go through the narrow gate, which leads to LIFE.

The question is, how are the wicked destroyed?

Malachi 4:1-3
1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall BURN as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and ALL that do WICKEDLY, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall BURN THEM UP, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
2 But unto you that fear My name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.
3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for THEY SHALL BE ASHES under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

Here we have read another testimony of scripture, that the wicked will be turned into ASHES. They are consumed in the fire. They are NOT preserved in the fire, but they are burned up, they are DESTROYED completely.

All who cling to sin and to Satan, are destroyed with him. For sin, death, suffering, pain, and sorrow, cannot be destroyed completely while those who continue in sin are left to live without end. God brings all these to a final end in the Lake of Fire and Brimstone:

Revelation 20:14
And DEATH and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

When sin and sinners, and death are destroyed, the promise of God to His people is then fulfilled:

"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea." "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be NO MORE DEATH, neither SORROW, nor CRYING, neither shall there be any more PAIN: for the former things are passed away." Revelation 21:1, 4

Brothers and sisters, our loving God has DELAYED this work of DESTRUCTION, this work of PURIFYING the earth from sin, because He wants us to accept His Son by faith. He wants us to allow Jesus to WASH us from sin with His blood, and to give us power to OBEY Him fully, power to live FREE from SIN.

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, NOT WILLING THAT ANY SHOULD PERISH, but that ALL should COME TO REPENTANCE.

We are going to look into the meaning of, 'The Eternal, Unquenchable Fire', whose smoke ascends up forever and ever.

We read Revelation 20:10. "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."

We read Revelation 14:11. "And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name."

Now, this is not the first time the Bible mentions a fire, whose smoke ascends up forever and ever. Let's go to the Old Testament, in the book of Isaiah. We'll read chapter 34 from verse 9. And while we read, we will notice TWO PICTURES described.

Isaiah 34:9-11, 15
9 And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. 10 It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.
11 But the cormorant and the bittern shall POSSESS IT; the owl also and the raven shall DWELL IN IT: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness. 15 THERE shall the great owl make her nest, and lay, and hatch, and gather under her shadow: THERE shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her mate.

In this passage, we see TWO PICTURES described, and one picture comes after the other. The first picture described in verses 9 and 10 is that of a land that becomes burning pitch. It describes an unquenchable fire, whose smoke shall go up forever.

The second picture comes at the end of verse 10 where we are told that the very same land in the first picture, shall lie waste. Then birds like the cormorant and the bittern shall POSSESS IT; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it. In verse 15 we are told that " THERE shall the great owl make her nest, and lay, and hatch, and gather under her shadow: THERE shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her mate. "

Looking at these two pictures, we realise that the unquenchable fire described, whose smoke ascends up forever, actually COMES TO AN END, it passes away. This is because the land is later presented as turned into a wasteland where birds make their nests, they lay, they hatch, and gather their young ones under them. By the TIME the birds possess the very same land, that unquenchable fire, whose smoke ascends up forever, must have come to an end. Moreover, verse 13 mentions thorns, and other wild plants growing there. By the TIME plants grow THERE, the unquenchable fire, whose smoke shall go up forever, must have come to an end.

Let us consider Jude 1:7. "Even as S***m and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire."

Here is presented the first picture of eternal fire in the case of S***m and Gomorrah, and the cities about them. Where do we find the second picture?

We read 2 Peter 2:6. "And turning the cities of S***m and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;"

Here we see that even the case of S***m and Gomorrah had TWO PICTURES. The first one, of an eternal fire, and the second one, of those cities turned into ashes just as the unquenchable fire of Isaiah 34 turned that land into a wasteland. We see that the 'Eternal Fire' of S***m and Gomorrah, just like the 'Unquenchable Fire' of Isaiah 34, comes to an end, having accomplished its purpose, having turned the wicked cities into ashes.

Brothers and sisters, God's Unquenchable Fire has a purpose, and when that purpose is accomplished, the fire comes to an end. Even for the case of, 'The Lake of Fire and Brimstone', whose smoke ascends up forever, there is a second picture.

Let's read Revelation 21:5. "And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make ALL things new. And He said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful."

Seeing that God promises to make ALL thing new, then we know that the earth will not be left burning, the earth will not be left in ashes. By the time God makes ALL things new, the 'Lake of Fire and Brimstone' must have passed away.

And John the Revelator is told to write that promise down, for God's words are TRUE and FAITHFUL.

The experience of the fires of hell, is referred to as the 'Second Death', in Revelation 21:8.
Why does God allow the wicked to experience the fires of hell?
Why are the wicked NOT admitted to heaven?

We read John 14:6. "Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father EXCEPT through ME."

We read Proverbs 8:35, 36. "35 For whoever finds ME finds life, And obtains favor from the Lord; 36 But he who sins against ME wrongs his own soul; All those who hate ME love death."

We see here that those who find CHRIST, find LIFE; they find a way to God. And those who hate Christ, love death.

Let's read Ephesians 4:18. "Having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart."

Here we have read of those who have separated themselves from the life of God. And the sure result of this separation is death.

One more scripture: Revelation 6:15-17. "15 And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, 16 and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

At the Second Coming of Christ, the wicked prefer mountains and rocks to fall on them. They prefer death, than meeting God, than meeting Christ face to face. Can such a people be admitted to heaven? NO.

Is God just? YES.

God is just, and the justifier of him who believes in Jesus.
