TRUCK FERRYING CEMENT LOSES CONTROL, KILLS A BODA BODA RIDER AND RAMS INTO FIVE VEHICLES IN ISIOLO.
A Speeding trailer lost control and killed a boda boda rider before ramming into five other vehicles in Isiolo town, sparking fear among traders who usually sell their wares along the road oblivious of the danger that lurks.
According to eyewitnesses, the trailer which was ferrying cement came speeding and hooting as the driver tried to evade vehicles that were also along the busy Isiolo – Meru highway, with some motorists successfully managing to flee from the road to avoid being crushed by the speeding truck. One of the motorists though landed in a ditch as he fled the danger but luckily escaped unhurt.
Isiolo Sub County Police Commander Collins Saina who was only available on phone confirmed that the one person who lost his life during the incident was a bodaboda rider, while at least five vehicles were badly damaged by the speeding lorry before it eventually made a stop at Kiwanja area in Ngaremara ward, still along the Isiolo – Marsabit highway. He said that the trailer was ferrying cement to Moyale and reportedly developed mechanical (brake) problems while at Maili Saba area in Meru County and passed through Isiolo town on high speed, hence the damage and loss of life. Saina said that both the lorry driver and Turn boy/conductor escaped unhurt, adding that the police are investigating the possibility that the two could have siphoned fuel from the truck’s tank, and therefore decided to drive the heavy vehicle on a free mode/ gear-free to in order to compensate for the lost fuel, which could have interfered with efficiency of the brake system.
Traders at the Isiolo Market and town residents called upon the national government through the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) to consider establishing a bypass that will enable such vehicles to keep off the town central business district enroute to Marsabit and Moyale.
