The IFAB 2024/25 Laws of the Game document is 230 pages long.

Kizungumkuti ahead!!

George Orwell understood reading habits and kept The Animal Farm below 100 pages. Robert Greene condensed The Laws of Power to 48.

Even God took Moses through a rigorous Ufupisho class and summarised His laws to 10. Jesus narrowed it to one.

Haaya sasa, coaches and referees may now enter the boxing ring!

Reminder: We are still observing 'The Chelsea Experiment' in football management.

Its now season 3.

I hope one day football decides to ditch throw -ins for kick-ins or roll-ins. Whatever adjustments are made to ensure the rule is not abused can be discussed at that point.

E.g ball must be passed backwards, no kicking past a certain distance, opponent must be a certain distance away etc.

One beautiful aspect of this new week is that we are not discussing whether the English FA Charity Shield is a real trophy or not.

Different reasons will be given, but we know why there is no such debate.

Quickly stepping back into football (at the grassroots we never left):

Here's a beautiful excerpt into understanding Liverpool FC. And also football in general - specifically one formula in the art and math of assembling a winning team.

How Jurgen Klopp did it.

Germany, the team I support, has started the Euro 2024 much better than the last three major international tournaments.

And Kai Havertz was good too!

Good tidings!

Toni Kroos has a certain bluntness and arrogance, but you could say he has earned it.

Man has won so much and has been so professional it becomes difficult to counter him when he outs someone.

For instance, he called out Aubameyang and Hazard, and you couldn't help but feel that there was truth in his words. At the same time, you had to feel that his comments towards the said players was a bit harsh.

Eduardo Camavinga's words: Toni doesn’t say much but when he does, he kills you. I like that about him.

Yote tisa, a big talent, model professional and serial winner.

Signed off from club football with a Champions' League medal and will say goodbye to international football after the Euros.

Happy Retirement, Toni!

Today, we enter another episode of The Chelsea Experiment, as they unveil Enzo Maresca as the new manager.

The list of coaches hired and fired in quick succession continues growing. Mauricio Pochetinno had a relatively decent tail end of the 2023/24 season, and I guessed they would retain him.

But that doesn't seem like The Chelsea Way.

With Maresca, they have again showed a departure from the norm: going for a coach with great potential rather than a seasoned top-level manager who comes in to win things immediately. They did the same with Graham Potter.

But can they have the patience to let that potential grow to fruition?

I get a tad uncomfortable at the discussion of football 'legends.'

Because it is often a biased discussion that negates a lot of good things done by one footballer just to place the other one on top. Many times, it uses club loyalty and stat padding to trash one legend and glorify another.

Take, for example, a comparison of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. Two stalwarts, no doubt.

But someone will just pop up a premier league medal to trash Stevie G -who is celebrating his birthday, btw. Happy returns, Stevie!

If Paul Scholes is introduced into the debate, Stevie sinks even lower going by superficial elements.

There's also John Terry vs Vidic or Rio Ferdinand. Or cross-border, English vs Spanish midfield cores. Or Theirry Henry vs Drogba or Wayne Rooney.

It gets worse if you do it cross-generation, like comparing Virgil van Djik to, say, Tony Adams.

Its all good for banter, but I still feel like a load of disrespect goes into this discussion.

Again, less talented players with great leadership qualities tend to get the shorter end of the stick. Gerrard, for instance, might not have had the talent of Iniesta or Busquets, but he sure as hell had that Liverpool engine running! Other players in this mould include Granit Xhaka and Gerrard's own replacement, Jordan Henderson.

But as all is fair in love and war, maybe everything goes in football and banter - especially in the off-season.

I hate the football transfer season; you know that.

Still, some mentions pique my attention. Like the rumour of Marcus Rashford to Arsenal.

It sounds romantic, but for me its a no.

I have no doubt about Rashford's ability, but I have also been present to witness his inconsistency. There seems to be something popping up to distract him at every turn. While it may be argued that he needs rescuing ala Kai Havertz, I also don't forget that the saviour attempts failed with Mkhitaryan and, more recently, Willian. It is a wild card, really.

Also, Rashford, who turns 27 early next season, could cause some unwanted imbalance in the team. If he gets into the starting XI ahead of Martinelli, the Brazilian's progress is hampered. Leandro Trossard's role becomes even more diminished. None of the two will be content anymore.

If he is to compete with Saka, I see Rashy getting grumpy for having to come on from the bench. The best comfortable prospect I see for him right now is going up top to replace a theoretically departed Eddie Nketiah. I know he scored a brace against us in his early senior team days, but I am not sure how well he can fare as a 9.

Then there is the issue of wages. The good sir is on Β£300k+ a week. This seems a bit over the top for Arsenal. The wage would probably unsettle contract negotiations with other players and affect the books and, by extension, transfer ability in the future. Moreover, we have not had the best outcomes with big wages for the likes of Ozil and Aubameyang Pierre-Emerick.

I see United fans complain week in-week out about his laziness and selfishness. In an Arsenal fan's dreams, I know these are the things we imagine Arteta coaching out of the boy. But might the dog be already too old for new tricks?

27/05/2024

Notice how talk of Manjesta's FA win has died out fast. That signifies two things:
1. Even United fans know it was not a successful season
2. Rivals are not that bothered about United anymore

Now, as 'The Manchester United Experiment' enters my books of observation, remind me to be wary of their fans, many of whom are delusional and will try to convince you that the cat you are seeing is actually a dog.

I am looking for fans like Eric Mulwa who can step away from their fanhood when analyzing teams and say, We are in the trenches in this regard.

So what next for United? Will thay replace 7 Hag? How will they clear their deadwood? Who are their transfer targets? What is their (realistic) target in the coming season? Can they give the wheel back to Ole?

Ours are just eyes.

Congratulations Manchester United, 2023/24 FA Cup Champions.

What young talent you got there!

And a gem of a manager too!

24/05/2024

Have you ever seen a label on lorries, "Another one from Sam-Con Limited?"

Well, here's another one from Manjesta United.

A Devil's fan told me, "Arsenal ended the season without a trophy. United will win the FA and therefore have a better season than Arsenal."

I said, "How do you know United will win the FA?"

He said, "Wait and see."

I said, " Okay. In 2012/13, Wigan won the FA cup playing the final against Manchester City. Wigan got relegated while City finished second. Of the two, whom would you say had a better season?"

He said, "Aah we kwenda! Mbwa wewe!"

The things I go through!

23/05/2024

A Manchester United-spporting friend of mine asked me, "Would you take Xabi Alonso as manager at Arsenal?"

I replied, "My club is not in a position to consider new managers right now."

He said, "Ngui!"

23/05/2024

I'm back from celebrating Arsenal's successful season.

What successful season, you ask?

Let me simplify it: If, in your school, several students got As, but one of them got slightly lower points, would you deem the runners-up to have failed?

I am happy that I can now go a full season enjoying ALL my team's matches. We used to watch on life support, or not at all.

"You have such low, mediocre standards of success!"

Haaya, were baki hapo na you high standards.

Kanaflow?

05/05/2024

However the season ends, Raymond Kinyua Rayie will be proud to cash in his early season bet on Kai Havertz. He was one of not so many Arsenal faithful and football fans in general to back the signing of the Leverkusen star turned Chelsea flop.

Man, it finally feels good to get a Chelsea player come perform for us. It has for a long time been the other way. In my days, I have seen Ashley Cole, Fabregas-indirectly-, and Giroud switch clubs and go on to shine at our expense. Can't say the same of William Gallas, Willian and even the decent Petr Cech.

If only we can wrap this!

04/05/2024

To go around my obvious and justified bias when reviewing a football officiating decision, I take a moment to ask myself, "How would I feel if that was given to/against my team?"

If I was a Bournemouth fan, I'd be moaning all weekend over that penalty decision.

If you hear an Arsenal fan justifying the pen with 'they should have seen red in the 10th,' that's a covert admission that two errors occured. Which does not make either less of an error.

Anyway,

27/04/2024

Football sometimes moves too fast for me...one game and the tide turns like we have never watched football before.

For instance, when Liverpool lost in midweek, some of my fellow Arsenal fans wrote them off the race instantly. Same thing when Arsenal lost to Villa two weeks ago.

I never quite understand the hullabaloo. But maybe its just me; I hardly celebrate when my team is 2-0 up in the 80th minute.

10/04/2024

On Gabriel Maghalhaes, was that a penalty?

In the strictest sense of the rules, yes.

But I'd never give it, not if I was the best-trained referee officiating a match where both the Cali and Medellin cartels had placed bets. It would simply be poor game management.

If it was so bad a sin, like Jesus done paid on the cross, Van Persie done paid this one for us with THAT red card at Camp Nou.

Say what, Otieno?

09/04/2024

Manuel Neuer clearly, cleverly, declined Saka's invitation to contact there. Not a penalty imo.

Still, better days are here.

I said 'More tomorrow' regarding tips to succeed in trials, so, here.

Competition

Coaches want competitive players, but they often dislike players whose form of competition is diminishing others. Ukienda trials, always try to make others look good. This makes the scout, coach look at you as part of their team set-up and attracts them to you.

Technical and tactical ability.

Technique is individual, tactics is taking instructions. Technique includes things like first touch, turning, range of pass and decision making. In this, express the best you've got.

Re tactics, listen to what the trialists say, even when it is not directed to you. If they say, "Don't run away from the target," try to run towards the target always.

Bonus points:

Sleep enough before and during trials. Don't let nervousness affect your freshness.

Ask questions - ask the scouts how you are performing, what they want and where you can improve.

Enjoy every drill, every game.

Ishiara FC and Cephar Mutugi said, carry water/bottle...sijui hiyo ni maana halisi ama maana fiche.

My team is urgently looking for a young talented player named Maina.

We don't have a scholarship or anything; we just want to nickname him Mainoo like that teenager who is saving Manjesta United.

Ghana's Osman Bukari will have mixed feelings about their 2-2 draw with Egypt last night, but pride will not be the most dominant.

The 25-year-old Genk winger came on for Inaki Williams in the 73rd minute but was withdrawn in the 89th. Few things scream humiliation like a substitute getting substituted!

He had the joint-lowest match rating (2.8), shared with his replacement Joseph a Paintsil who was on for just one minute of regulation time.

It would be really interesting to hear the conversation on the technical bench that led to the hooking of the substitute.

Egypyt 2-2 Ghana

What a match! The Pharaohs came from behind twice to secure another crucial point and throw Group B wide open. Cape Verde still sitctop of the group having played a game less, set to face Mozambique Friday evening.

Earlier, Guinea Bissau became the first team to be eliminated from after 4-2 to Equitorial Guinea. Nigeria nicked a 0-1 penalty win over Ivory Coast to keep their competition hopes alive.

The beauty of African football continues later Friday with Cape Verde - Mozambique (5 pm), Senegal Cameroon (8 pm) and Guinea- Gambia (11 pm) on the cards.

Only Ivory Coast come into today's round with three points. Equitorial Guinea, Nigeria, Egypt and Ghana have a point apiece, whereas Guinea Bissau has neither a pount nor a goal.

Pharaohs vs Black Stars (11 pm) is the highlight match of the day.
