WHAT WILL RADIO LOOK LIKE IN KENYA IN 2035?
This is a thought I’ve been reflecting on, and I’d love to hear the perspectives of media practitioners, especially in radio:
The radio landscape in Kenya in 2035 is expected to undergo significant transformation, influenced by increasing digital access and changing consumer habits. As terms like "Radio by Appointment" and "Radio on Demand" become more popular, the traditional radio model will evolve.
Radio by Appointment refers to a model where content is scheduled and made available on-demand, allowing listeners to access radio shows at their convenience rather than following a live broadcast schedule.
Radio on Demand gives users the ability to listen to specific programs, podcasts, or music playlists whenever they choose, mimicking the flexibility seen in on-demand video platforms.
According to a Datareportal survey from 2024:
22.71 million internet users in Kenya at the start of 2024, with internet pe*******on at 40.8%.
13.05 million social media users, making up 23.5% of the population.
66.04 million active mobile connections, exceeding the total population with 118.7% pe*******on.
As internet access improves and mobile usage grows, more Kenyans are shifting to digital platforms for their media consumption.
Radio stations are increasingly embracing online radio, podcasts, and audio-visual content for their greater flexibility. Kenya is home to approximately 303 FM radio stations, offering a diverse array of content. While some of these stations are already adapting to these trends, others are still uncertain about the direction to take, with some remaining unaware of the shifts occurring. What does the future hold for those who continue to rely on traditional broadcast methods?
Kenya is also rolling out digital audio broadcasting, which is seen as a game changer for both broadcasters and audiences.
By 2035, this shift will have expanded, with streaming services and digital platforms becoming key channels for radio content.
