ABOUT US
Bulala FM was established in Budalangi by the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD). The radio station started as one of the four stations run by KMD, as part of the RANET-Kenya project – which aims to set up communications infrastructure to inform communities about the weather and the environment. Other similar RANET FM stations in Kenya, which are operational, include Kangema-Murang’a (

a landslide prone area), Suswa-Narok (frequent drought), Kwale (prone to drought and malaria and Bunyala(a flood prone area). RANET (RAdio InterNET) – Kenya is part of the global RANET project – a rural communications project that seeks to transmit weather and climate information to rural communities using Internet and radio. Bulala FM was initiated in 2004 after a seminar by the KMD. A launch was planned in 2005, but lack of funding, and later the political violence of 2007/8, slowed it down. In February 2009, the KMD encouraged formation of a new committee and sent some of the new committee members on a KMD radio training course in Nairobi. The KMD also sent committee members to another of its radio projects, Kangema FM, to see how Kangema – regarded as the flagship station of the RANET-Kenya project – worked. The trainees returned to Budalangi and conducted seminars with members of their listenership community. They also set about raising funds for a building. Success came in the form of grants from the international NGO, Action Aid, for the foundations of the building. The station later received funding from the Western Kenya Community Driven Development and Flood Mitigation Project, a partnership between the World Bank and the Ministry of Special Programmes, which helped build the offices. The KMD donated equipment. The Constituency Development Fund (CDF) gave a grant for power connection

Structures were formed and staff recruited on the advice of the KMD. Bulala FM is overseen by a local Management Committee. The local management committee was established in 2007 and was launched in February 2008 by the then District Officer and approved by the District Commissioner (D.C) Bunyala on behalf of the Kenya Meteorological Department. The initial mandate of the committee was; sensitize the community members about the importance of the radio, identify site for the operationalisation of the radio and recruit broadcasters among the Abanyala and recommend them for training by Kenya Meteorological Services (KMS). The current primary responsibility of the Local Management Committee is to provide leadership, guidance, strategic direction and to make policies. The vision of the radio station is to become a leading, community operational forecasting station that provides optimum contribution for improved livelihoods. Its mission is to communicate weather and climate and other developmental information, predictions, warnings and other public-good information to rural communities. Its goal is to Inform, educate and entertain for sustainable livelihoods

Hello team.
Is there anybody reporting about the situation of children in the county?
In Budalangi, Bunyala South, people with few resources have moved to other areas yet others have pitched up tents within the same ward on raised land.
Those in the makeshift tents with their children suffer a number of things :
1. *Cold during this rainy weather:* As we are aware, May rain is going to be enhanced and from the forecast, it is going to be above normal.
2. *Waterborne diseases:* Not being wary about the dangers of playing in dirty water, they are likely to get diseases from the same water. In addition, all calls; long and short are responded in the same water which is used for all other domestic purchases.
3. *Deaths:* As the number of people who have lost lives increase countrywide, we pray that our own do not drown and add to the rest. We have already lost our people from Budalangi in the Nairobi deaths and one from Ganga in Samia that drowned in Sigalame hardly a fortnight ago.
4. *Precaution against lightning:* Let's put measures to prevent further casualties. It is also advisable to talk to all children not to play in moving water or in the rain to avoid lightening strikes and other mishaps. We should not shelter under trees since storm can uproot trees or fall off branches. These can cause death. Trees also attract lightning. If in house during rain, we should not shelter close to window grills.
5. *Starvation, malnutrition versus child parent:* Since most of food crops were destroyed by flashfloods and backflow, the families that had invested heavily in farming were left with no other source of food. As the elders move out to fend for the family, older children take up the parental responsibility space. Upto when the parent will come back with a catch is when feeding will go on. If not, then prayer for Providence of the next day is what will go on.
6. *Child pregnancy and school dropout:* It is almost a normal trend that during calamities and disasters, some parental responsibilities are suspended! This leaves the children to making uninformed decisions and engage in immoral behaviours. In the case where responsive child nurturing was not done effectively at early years, this is where we get truant children, children in conflict with the law, child offenders, teen parents and many others. As countrywide floods continue to dictate and choke the schools opening calendar, children may likely be weaned to other uncouth behaviours leading to dropout from school. This is what we experienced during COVID -19.
7. *Suspension of access to right to medication:* It is an entitlement under international instruments like UNCRC and domesticated laws that every child has attention to medication. Doctors' strike has affected this right. The only remedy is private hospital, self prescription of medicine, using traditional herbs and spiritual intervention. During this state where monetary resources are unavailable, health and treatment of children in the state of emergency and disaster is worrying.
8. *Child labour:* With divided focus of stressed and burdened caregivers, children are likely to resort to doing work for financial gain. This is where people exploit children financially.

Issues may be many.

*These are some Shared Way forward by a few community members:*
1. Directorate for Children Services (DCS) has trained CPVs. The Children Protection Volunteers should take a deliberate role of sensitising children and parents as the watchdog on any child-scavenger and report immediately.
2. Community Health Volunteers should team up with CPVs and sensitise the community on safety precautions, test and prescribe medicine within their means. This period should not be abused.
3. End the strike: The government should work out all possible means with the doctors to end the strike. Ministry of health would better be moved back to central government.
4. Counseling: During times of loss and such calamities or disasters, counselors should be available to aide the affected.
5. If any food and none food items are availed to the affected, they should be packed and distributed to the person's in question not leaving them at the mercy of the uncaring few.
6. Utilisation of local media - Bulala FM: Set up by Kenya meteorological department (KMD), Bulala FM also doubles as a mouthpiece where many can be reached within a minute with limited resources. This is where children and parents can engage well and possible areas of intervention are pinpointed.
7. Stakeholders to engage responsive child nurturing programs in their activities

Jambo, here our own Obuyu new music. is a swahili word that simply
defines a prideful individual. There are people
in our lives who really think that they own air
we breathe. If that relative, lover or a friend
mistreated you thinking without them you can
not live because they have money and they feel
they are gods who brought sun, moon, and air
into your life, tell them ! If all they
want is to take advantage of you and mistreat
you, tell them ! Because we all have
our pride and dignity to protect.
