The recent importation of fish from China into the local market has caused consternation among some parties, while some fish dealers in Kisumu have welcomed their extra low prices. The recent disclosure by the MP for Kisumu West Olago Aluoch in Parliament that enquiries to the Ministry of Fisheries revealed that they are not aware and have not sanctioned any importation of fish from China is exceedingly worrying. Who then has certified that this fish is fit for human consumption. And knowing how China is fond of using Third World countries as dumping grounds for sub-standard products, from clothes to electronics, shouldn’t we take a step back and do further investigations before we wholeheartedly embrace this ‘produce’.
