From time immemorial, the people of Japan have fondly anticipated the blossoming of the Japanese plum, which has long featured prominently in art and poetry. The Japanese plum blooms in January and February (coinciding with the month of the emperor’s birthday) and is closely connected to the name of the current era, "Reiwa". Found in the 1300 year-old Man’yō-shū anthology of poetry, the particular poem that the term Reiwa was taken from is a poem about the plum blossom.

The Tokugawa shogunate's Edo Castle (now the site of the Tokyo Imperial Palace) was once a vast complex that also encompassed the area that is now Tokyo Station and the Marunouchi business district. Traces of the castle complex can still be seen in the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace - if you know what to look for!

Having unified the warring states of 16th century Japan, Tokugawa Ieyasu turned his attention to the construction of a majestic castle on a scale that would fittingly demonstrate the power and authority of the Tokugawa Shogunate. To find out more about this aspect of Tokyo’s history, who better to...

The Hokkaido Inu is a hunting dog from (as the name suggests) Japan's northern island of Hokkaido. This breed was indispensible to the indigenous Ainu people for hunting bears and deer.

Dogs are thought to have accompanied humans to the Japanese isles during the Jōmon Period, traditionally dated between around 14,000 and 300 BCE. Japan’s geographical isolation and the fact that breeding was left up to nature mean that Japanese dogs today remain very similar to their Jōmon Perio...

In the second article in our series on Japanese dogs, we look at the Kai-ken (Kai dog), a native dog from the mountains of Yamanashi Prefecture, declared a national monument in 1934, the second Japanese dog to have been designated as such, after the Akita-inu. Awareness of this rare breed has increased recently, but although the Kai dog has even been featured on television, it still remains one of the lesser-known and understood Japanese dog breeds. To learn about the background and history of the breed, we begin by talking to Kenji Ōgawara, owner of Genrō Kensha breeding kennels in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, where the focus is on preserving the original Kai-ken breed.

Based on feng shui principles, the iconic feature of Bise village on Okinawa's Motobu Peninsula is the rows of fukugi (Garcinia subelliptica) trees that delineate the perimeter of each homestead, joining up to create a criss-cross pattern of row upon row of trees known as “fukugi namiki”.

Japanese graphic design abounds with symbolic motifs. Notable among these are “kamon”, family crests that represent a family or an individual. While some kamon serve a similar purpose as the coats of arms used by European nobility, what is seems to be unique to Japan is the fact that here, family crests are widely used at all levels of society, among commoners and nobility alike.
