In Japan, the contraceptive pill is not covered by the National Health Insurance. However, if you specifically ask for a certain brand of pill, it may be covered, but you’d most likely receive it for a different reason, such as pain management, with the contraceptive factor being more of a ‘convenient side-effect’.
This doesn’t mean you’re not protected when using these pills (although you should always double-check with your healthcare provider). It’s just scary to see the information pamphlet in your pill box say “You cannot take this medicine to prevent pregnancy”, especially when you’ve been prescribed it by a gynecologist after asking for the pill. Yikes!
Have you noticed this message on your pill pamphlet?
