Our new Asian studio is located in Tokyo’s Ebisu neighborhood, in a hip three-story stand-alone building. Designed by Los Angeles-based Spanish interior designer Manuel Pérez Peña, the space blends LA chill with a bit of Tokyo glitz and glam. Two stunning three-story murals by Brazilian street artist Titifreak cover the building’s façade. Cutters Tokyo offers kick-ass creative editorial with locally based editors Ryan McGuire, Aki Mizutani. Looking back at some striking work for Schick, featuring Kabuki actor Hayato Nakamura, directed by Aki Mizutani with Cutters Studios Tokyo in charge of production to editing.
As he notes "Shaving marks the beginning of my transformation into character," we were fascinated by the way he transitions from shaving to kabuki makeup application - and suddenly his kabuki character appears. You might not realize but the Japanese-style room in the video is actually a well-disguised set - this commitment to details is not showcased in the video, but we believe seen in the final result.

「普段の中村隼人から役になる瞬間が、「髭剃り」から入っている」とご本人もおっしゃるとおり、髭剃りから始まり隈取りを仕上げる様子に見惚れてしまいます。
お化粧するシーンが撮影された和室は、実はスタジオの中に畳を持ち込み建てた美術セット。映像にはあまり映らないところまでこだわりました。

The series was produced by Boardwalk Pictures, known for "Chef's Table," and Steven Speilberg's Amblin Entertainment, with Director and Showrunner Yon Motskin. Japan culture expert Roland Kelts makes an appearance as well.

Director Ryan McGuire looks back at the Tokyo Tokyo project, a collaboration with Aoi Promotions.

Tokyo is a kaleidoscope of dizzying sights and sounds. I wanted to recreate, and depict in the first person, what a visitor sees, hears, and feels on a first visit to the city. Together with Dentsu and AOI Pro. we pitched the idea to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and won the contract.
We shot close to 50 locations in less than a week. It was all adrenaline. We made it snow in October for the scene at the shrine, and shot the famous Shibuya Scramble crossing in between traffic lights at 3am. At 3am Shibuya is actually quite dead. Dr Yu had to go in and turn on all of the lights in post. He’ll forever be known as “the man who made Shibuya bright again.”
Tokyo’s a special place. Even with 50 locations we barely scratched the surface. I’d love to do another 50.

Director Ryan Mcguire looks back on our work for BMW Japan, shot in both New York City and Kyoto with the same team. Conceived with the prestigious photography festival KYOTOGRAPHIE, the 3-part film focuses on legendary photographer Albert Watson and his Journey of Light.

"Shooting that first episode in New York put hair on my chest. It was a five-day shoot. We were out the door every day before dawn to catch the morning light from the back of a topless Jeep Wrangler. It was -15 degrees most days. We didn’t have permits so we had to run from the cops. Felt like a teenager.

The interview with Albert was on the third day, and we had no pre-interview. We had to know what kind of b-roll to capture so before we left Tokyo we culled all we could from the internet of what Albert might say, cut it together and planned our cutaways. We pretty much nailed it.

After shooting in New York in February, I thought Kyoto in the spring would be a walk in the park. Dead wrong. Everything was run-and-gun. Even when we had permits we weren’t allowed to block traffic or 'bother' anyone. We were even forced to abandon a shot we had been setting up for over an hour because two warring temples happened to be in the frame!

Planning saved the day. We went in knowing exactly what we needed to capture, down to the frame. That made us bulletproof. When we ran into trouble on the ground, we just regrouped, recalibrated, and got it done. Everyone was really happy with how the series turned out. Would love to do it again!"

Founded from scratch by Yuki Mizobuchi, this vegan bakery grew from a pop-up market to seven physical locations in roughly two years. We loved helping to tell a part of this incredible story of entrepreneurship.
