14/04/2023

Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke. More than 137,000 people die each year from strokes, making it the third leading cause of death in the United States.
While these statistics are scary, it’s even more alarming that most people don’t know the basic signs of a stroke. In fact, as many as 97 percent of people over the age of 50 are ignorant of the warning signs.
What Causes a Stroke?
A stroke is when the blood supply to certain parts of the brain gets stalled, leaving delicate brain tissue without oxygen and nutrients. When this happens, it only takes minutes for tissues to be irreversibly damaged and destroyed, so acting quickly is essential.
Strokes are caused by two primary reasons: a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or a burst blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).
A blocked artery is the most common cause, accounting for more than 80 percent of all strokes. A blood clot is often at the root of this blockage.
A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain leaks or bursts. This can happen because of high blood pressure, incorrect dosing of blood thinners, or aneurysms, which are weak spots in the walls of blood vessels.

How Healthy Eating Prevents Disease?
According to Ayurveda, healthy diet along with a healthy lifestyle is a fundamental pillar of health and longevity. For more than 5,000 years, Ayurveda has been practiced to promote wellness.
Eating healthy is one of the most important things that we can do for our health. In Ayurveda, there are various ‘shlokas’ which indicate that-“food is a powerful medicine when consumed properly.” But, nowadays, most of the people are grabbing food on the run as people are eating in their cars.
They are eating readily available and conveniently eating food. At night, people usually eat heavy food but at night, food is not going to digest because digestive fire is not active at night.
According to Ayurvedic principles, if the food is not digested properly due to any reason, it causes indigestion and which results in the production of ‘Ama’ or toxins in the system.
Ama blocks the channels which lead to certain disorders such as high cholesterol, chronic fatigue and waking up with a puffy face, backache, joint problems, weight gain, respiratory disorders and etc.
Eating healthy prevents all these disorders. If Ayurvedic principles of healthy eating is followed, then we can prevent the number of diseases as right food is powerful medicine.
Healthy eating is helpful in overcoming fatigue, lethargy, and susceptibility to illness and stress supports immunity, helps in improving mood stabilization, prevents anemia and also helps in preventing various lifestyle disorders such as heart diseases, diabetes, respiratory disorders, joint disorders, cancer etc.
What are the rules of Healthy Eating according to Ayurveda?
Lunch
Ayurveda considers lunch to be the most important meal of the day. Lunch should be the main meal and dinner should be lighter than lunch.
• Digestion would improve dramatically and this will help the persons to get rid of various gastric problems which are associated with ama formation such as gas, bloating, constipation, heartburn
• Lunch should be considered as the main meal of the day. It should be balanced that includes the combination of various spices.
• Food digests properly in the afternoon, therefore body can use the nutrients to build tissues and will be able to replace worn cells and tissues quickly.
• It will help by balancing the physiology as well as the The body will work at optimal levels.
• Lunch must include vegetables, some grains, some higher protein-rich foods such as lentils, tofu or paneer.
• Yogurt or fresh buttermilk can be included with lunch as it supplies good bacteria to the system and therefore aids in digestion.
Shun Fad Foods
Many companies launch their food products in the market and claim that their food products are guaranteed to work.
• It is not necessary that food products that work for the majority of the people will still work for us, as each of us is different individuals.
• Ayurveda recognizes the uniqueness and allows us to manage our health in a personalized way. This is the beauty of Ayurveda and it is not the It is the ancient science of living.
• Fad diets generally don’t work because these foods generally lack nutrients and minerals and are not suited to the body type of every individual.
Add Spices
According to Ayurveda, our food should consist of 6 tastes namely sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent and pungent.
Spices are not only meant to add flavor to our food but they have therapeutic value as well.
• Spices help to boost the immune system.
• They boost our digestive system so that our body is able to absorb and assimilate the nutrients from the food we eat.
• Spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, cumin seeds, fennel, cardamom, asafoetida should be included.
Water
Drink water on an empty stomach in the morning as it helps in re-hydrating our system and it flushes out toxins from the body.
• Drink water throughout the day, but avoid drinking ice-cold water. Drink warm water or water which is kept at room temperature.
• Drinking ice-cold water hampers the digestive system as it will slow down the secretion of gastric juices as well as enzymes.
Eat Natural Foods
It is just in the last few years that artificial ingredients and toxins have been introduced in our diet and the incidence of cancer has exploded in the last few years.
Cancer is the body’s response to toxicity and considered as the most extreme expressions of imbalance in the body.
• Processed foods, Genetically Modified Foods (GMO) foods, synthetic and processed foods which contain artificial preservatives and colors should be avoided because according to Ayurveda, our physiology is a reflection of nature and it works better if we live close to nature.
• Our body processes and digests the food that is close to nature such as- whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables.
Drink Healthy Beverages
Switch to healthy and vitality-boosting beverages and avoid excessive intake of tea and coffee.
• Ayurvedic herbal teas suits to our physiology and are formulated to correct the particular imbalance.
• Certain good eating habits such as: making lunch as the main meal of the day, eating fresh food, & avoid eating leftover foods help in adding life to our years.
• Eat a lighter and well-cooked meal at night at least three hours before going to bed.
• Avoid eating heavy meat or non-vegetarian food as they are hard to digest.
• Avoid stress in life as it causes weak digestion.
• Keep your body hydrated as it helps in removing impurities from the system. When the body is not hydrated properly, it cannot remove impurities from the lymphatic system properly.
• Choose a variety of foods and eat slowly in a calm environment without distractions.
• Eat more nourishing foods which are specific to particular doshas and include healthy fats such as- clarified butter (cow’s ghee) in the diet.
So, we can pursue what is in our control such as: living a balanced lifestyle, staying hydrated so as to get rid of impurities, eating pure foods and exercise regularly so as to prevent disease.

Overuse of Headache Medication

It may seem odd but the cause of your headaches can actually be the very thing you are taking to relieve them.
The Cause of Rebound Headaches
Medications for headaches may provide immediate pain relief but if you are ingesting the medication more than a few days a week there is a high potential for overuse of the medication. This overuse can result in a rebound headache, where you experience headaches directly from medication use while still taking the medication, or afterwards from withdrawal. You may be adding to your headaches as opposed to reducing their frequency and alleviating your head pain. When you take medication too often or in too high of a dose, your body is more likely to adapt to the medication. Even following directions exactly doesn't mean you are safe from rebound headaches.
The unfortunate reality is that almost any medication has the potential to cause a rebound headache and it will depend a great deal on your health status, medical history and quite simply, how your own body responds to the medication. It may, in fact, only be when you perhaps miss a dose of your headache medication that you realise your head pain is more intense than it was prior to commencing treatment.
Overuse of headache medication can result in:
• Intense withdrawal headache
• Sleep disorders
• Depression
• Agitation
• Pacing
• Racing heart
• Dry mouth
There is no one type of head pain that occurs with rebound headaches. You may find that you experience an intense throbbing headache or a dull constant one.
Is Your Head Pain a Rebound Headache?
One challenge you may face is to distinguish between a rebound headache and one that is a migraine or tension headache. Your doctor may ask you if your headaches are more intense following exertion. A rebound headache is generally not strengthened by activity whereas a migraine does tend to intensify or increase in frequency after exertion. A rebound headache is also less likely have the characteristic and classic migraine symptoms of sensory disturbances and vomiting
Which Medications are the Top Offenders?
There has been some suggestion that any medication has the potential to cause a rebound headache but there are still some drugs that are more likely to cause problems than others. Popular over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen may lead to rebound headaches. If taken in moderation and on an occasional basis, however, they are generally safe and you should be able to avoid any complications from overuse.
Some over-the-counter painkillers are sold in combination formulas, where other ingredients support or enhance the active pain relief ingredient. Many of these contain caffeine that is then added to drugs such as acetaminophen. The potential for overuse is higher with these and even drinking coffee on a daily basis can compound the effect. Some migraine medications have been indicated in rebound headaches; these include ergot preparations and the triptans. In addition, any pain relief drugs developed from o***m tend to have a high potential for overuse, which can lead to particularly intense rebound headaches. Medications with codeine are another culprit and should be used with caution.
Can Headache Medication Overuse Be Avoided?
By keeping headache medication use limited to two to three days a week, most people can safely avoid medication overuse. If you experience chronic headaches, however, and rely on daily medication, this task will prove quite difficult. With your doctor's approval, you may be able to alternate between two or more different medications. For example, you could take two different headache medications over four days during a week.
Essentially, the only way to truly eliminate rebound headaches is to reduce or stop taking the medications that are causing them. The flip side to this method is that you're then left with more of the original headaches you were using the medications to treat. Unfortunately, this still leaves you with non-medicating painful days and there is no perfect plan that can guarantee headache free days without the possibility of medication overuse. Ideally, the root cause of your headaches can be addressed such that medications are only a temporary and occasional means for alleviating pain.
You're much more likely to cause rebound headaches by taking too much of the prescription headache medication. Only take the amount and frequency prescribed by your doctor or according to the label on over-the-counter preparations. If you have any confusion when purchasing a prescription or non-prescription painkiller, ask the pharmacist for clarification.
In addition to rebound headaches, overuse of headache medication may also result in stomach ulcers or liver and kidney problems. The last thing you need is to replace one source of pain with another more complicated one, so follow your doctor's dosage instructions, read labels carefully and try to find non-medication ways to relieve headaches whenever possible. This can help you to reach your goal of being free from headaches, migraines and medication pain.

Does Stroke Cause Headaches?
Stroke is a serious and potentially fatal event that occurs in the brain and is usually accompanied by a very severe headache. People can experience two different types of stroke. In the first, a blood vessel in the brain, or that leads to the brain, bursts. This causes blood to leak into the brain tissue or the spaces between the brain and the skull. Any pressure on the brain causes pain and a headache develops immediately after a blood vessel has ruptured. The other type of stroke is called an ischaemic stroke. This occurs when a blockage in an artery supplying the brain cuts off the blood supply to a part of the brain tissue, causing it to die very quickly. This type of stroke can also cause a severe headache.
1 : Sub Arachnoid Haemorrhage and Headache
This stroke is caused by blood leaking into the space between the meninges, the thin membranes that surround the brain. This space is normally filled with cerebrospinal fluid and its volume is tightly controlled. A sudden increase in volume, even with a small bleed caused by the rupture of a minor blood vessel, has a major effect. The main symptom is an instant and incredibly severe headache which is disabling and often causes intense nausea, vomiting and collapse. If blood leaks into the spinal fluid, pain can also occur in the neck and in the back.
2 : Brain Haemorrhage and Headache
Bleeding within the brain itself is also associated with a very severe headache that comes on very quickly. The bleeding may follow a blockage in a blood vessel and is also accompanied by death of brain tissue. Other effects include paralysis, loss of consciousness, loss of speech and confusion.
3 : Brain Aneurysm and Headache
An aneurysm describes the ballooning out of an artery, which then bursts due to the pressure of blood inside. This can occur when the wall of the artery becomes weakened for some reason. The artery can develop the balloon long before the rupture, causing a headache that tends to persist for weeks, and no cause can be found to explain this sudden occurrence of regular headaches. Brain aneurysms are more common in people over 60. If daily headaches or constant headaches start suddenly with no explanation, doctors and neurologists often suggest a brain scan to find out if an aneurysm is present.
When the aneurysm bursts, the bleeding into the brain tends to be sudden and severe and causes a headache immediately. This has been described by the people who have experienced it as the worst headache they have ever known.
4 : Vascular Problems in the Brain and Headache
Another, rarer type of stroke is caused by a malformed blood vessel network in the brain. During early life, there are no symptoms but someone with tangled blood vessels is more likely to experience ruptures of small vessels as they get older. This ‘mini strokes’ can cause severe and regular headaches. This type of stroke is different to a transient ischaemic attack, which can also be called a mini stroke. Vascular malformation strokes tend to cause other symptoms including fits and the perception of strange noises that follow the rhythm of the pulse.
5 : Headache and Ischaemic Stroke
Ischaemic stroke, which occurs when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked by a fatty plaque or blood clot, is very common in older people in developed countries. It is a major cause of death and disability in the UK. Although this type of stroke does cause headache, it also tends to cause paralysis, usually down one side of the body, loss of speech, confusion and loss of consciousness.
6 : Most Headaches Do Not Indicate Stroke
Although very severe headaches are associated with strokes of different kinds, having a headache is usually not a sign of stroke. Most people get a headache at some time in their lives and the vast majority of people have regular headaches. The time to seek medical advice is when a headache is very severe and comes on with no warning and doesn’t go away and if any other symptoms of stroke are present. As with heart attacks, prompt treatment can make a big difference to survival and also to the level of recovery that occurs afterwards.

How Stress Affects Your Body
Another infographic from Healthline shows the effects of stress on your body.
Stress is a natural physical and mental reaction to life experiences. Everyone expresses stress from time to time. Anything from everyday responsibilities like work and family to serious life events such as a new diagnosis, war, or the death of a loved one can trigger stress. For immediate, short-term situations, stress can be beneficial to your health. It can help you cope with potentially serious situations. Your body responds to stress by releasing hormones that increase your heart and breathing rates and ready your muscles to respond.
Yet if your stress response doesn’t stop firing, and these stress levels stay elevated far longer than is necessary for survival, it can take a toll on your health. Chronic stress can cause a variety of symptoms and affect your overall well-being. Symptoms of chronic stress include:
• irritability
• anxiety
• depression
• headaches
• insomnia

1 : Central nervous and endocrine systems
Your central nervous system (CNS) is in charge of your “fight or flight” response. In your brain, the hypothalamus gets the ball rolling, telling your adrenal glands to release the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones rev up your heartbeat and send blood rushing to the areas that need it most in an emergency, such as your muscles, heart, and other important organs.
When the perceived fear is gone, the hypothalamus should tell all systems to go back to normal. If the CNS fails to return to normal, or if the stressor doesn’t go away, the response will continue.
Chronic stress is also a factor in behaviors such as overeating or not eating enough, alcohol or drug abuse, and social withdrawal.

2 : Respiratory and cardiovascular systems
Stress hormones affect your respiratory and cardiovascular systems. During the stress response, you breathe faster in an effort to quickly distribute oxygen-rich blood to your body. If you already have a breathing problem like asthma or emphysema, stress can make it even harder to breathe.
Under stress, your heart also pumps faster. Stress hormones cause your blood vessels to constrict and divert more oxygen to your muscles so you’ll have more strength to take action. But this also raises your blood pressure.
As a result, frequent or chronic stress will make your heart work too hard for too long. When your blood pressure rises, so do your risks for having a stroke or heart attack.

3 : Digestive system
Under stress, your liver produces extra blood sugar (glucose) to give you a boost of energy. If you’re under chronic stress, your body may not be able to keep up with this extra glucose surge. Chronic stress may increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The rush of hormones, rapid breathing, and increased heart rate can also upset your digestive system. You’re more likely to have heartburn or acid reflux thanks to an increase in stomach acid. Stress doesn’t cause ulcers (a bacterium called H. pylori often does), but it can increase your risk for them and cause existing ulcers to act up.
Stress can also affect the way food moves through your body, leading to diarrhea or constipation. You might also experience nausea, vomiting, or a stomachache.

4 : Muscular system
Your muscles tense up to protect themselves from injury when you’re stressed. They tend to release again once you relax, but if you’re constantly under stress, your muscles may not get the chance to relax. Tight muscles cause headaches, back and shoulder pain, and body aches. Over time, this can set off an unhealthy cycle as you stop exercising and turn to pain medication for relief.

5 : Sexuality and reproductive system
Stress is exhausting for both the body and mind. It’s not unusual to lose your desire when you’re under constant stress. While short-term stress may cause men to produce more of the male hormone testosterone, this effect doesn’t last.
If stress continues for a long time, a man’s testosterone levels can begin to drop. This can interfere with s***m production and cause erectile dysfunction or impotence. Chronic stress may also increase risk of infection for male reproductive organs like the prostate and te**es.
For women, stress can affect the menstrual cycle. It can lead to irregular, heavier, or more painful periods. Chronic stress can also magnify the physical symptoms of menopause.

6 : Immune system
Stress stimulates the immune system, which can be a plus for immediate situations. This stimulation can help you avoid infections and heal wounds. But over time, stress hormones will weaken your immune system and reduce your body’s response to foreign invaders. People under chronic stress are more susceptible to viral illnesses like the flu and the common cold, as well as other infections. Stress can also increase the time it takes you to recover from an illness or injury.
