【Noshiro Tanabata “Tenku-no-Fuyajou” (能代七夕「天空の不夜城」)】

Noshiro Tanabata “Tenku-no-Fuyajou” is a festival that began in 2013. However, the Noshiro region had a traditional summer Tanabata festival from the old days. It is said that people used to pull a castle-shaped lantern float (Toro) decorated with gigantic shachi (mythical animal with a head of a tiger and the body of a carp) all across the town. According to historical text, a Nagoya Castle-shaped lantern float was made more than 100 years ago during the Tempo era, and due to its popularity with citizens that this 17.6m tall Toro was paraded across town till dawn.
As a result of modernization, electrical wires were laid throughout the city limiting the height of the Toro. 7 to 8m tall floats were pulled in recent years, but the burying of electrical wires have allowed massive Toros to parade again. In 2013, a 17.6m tall giant Toro, named "Karoku", was carefully replicated based on old pictures and texts, reviving it after a whole century. In 2014, "Chikasue", a 24.1m high and tallest Toro in Japan was completed.
Two large lanterns floats are paraded through the streets of Noshiro: the 17.6-meter-tall Karoku float and the 24.1-meter-tall Chikasue float, the tallest castle-shaped lantern in Japan.
The splendor of the large colorful lanterns is magnificent and breathtakingly beautiful.

【Tanabata Sky Lantern Festival 2022】
Enjoy the fantastic night sky surrounded by over a thousand orange lights. It will be held indoors in Tokyo and Kobe, and outdoors in Kyoto. In Tokyo, you can celebrate Tanabata (Star Festival) by launching sky lanterns at Shinjuku Sumitomo Building’s Sankaku Hiroba square. The venue is covered by a glass roof, so that the event can still go on even when it rains. This three-day event is different. Here, strips of wish-inscribed paper are attached to the bottom of modern sky lanterns lit with LED instead of candles, making them safer and super kid-friendly. There will be music performances and food stalls at the event. The event timings are 17.00 to 21.00.

【City in Hyogo Prefecture loses memory drive with info on all 460,000 residents】
The city of Amagasaki in western Japan said Thursday that it has lost a USB flash drive containing personal information on all of its roughly 460,000 residents. Tokyo Tower has recreated the Milky Way using 21,000 LED lights, so you can gaze up at the (artificial) stars in the middle of the city. Every 15 minutes the blue LED lights that represent the starry sky turn pink and gold, while the Milky Way changes from white to a rainbow of seven colours. This optical special effect makes the Tokyo skyline look even more mesmerising, as if our beloved city is under a magical starry night. The event takes place daily from 9.30am until 10pm (until 10.30pm on Sat).

【Japan researchers use living human skin equivalent on robots】
Researchers at the University of Tokyo say they have developed a method to culture a living human skin equivalent which can cover the surface of robots. A research group led by Professor Takeuchi Shoji says they used two types of human skin cells to culture a living skin material. The cells and a robot in the shape of a human finger were cultured together in a dedicated container, resulting in the formation of a skin equivalent about 1.5 millimeters thick around the robotic finger. The researchers say the skin equivalent has a water-repelling function and can handle repeated stretching and contracting of the finger's joints. The latest achievement by the Japanese research group is viewed as an important robotic technology for the future.

【Ameyoko】
Ameyoko, (アメ横) is a busy market street along the Yamanote Line tracks between Okachimachi and Ueno Stations. The name "Ameyoko" is a short form for "Ameya Yokocho" (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there. Alternatively, "Ame" also stands for "America", because a lot of American products used to be available there when the street was the site of a black market in the years following World War Two.
Today, various products such as clothes, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried food and spices are sold along Ameyoko. Opening hours and closing days depend on individual stores, but stores typically open around 10:00 and close around 20:00. Many stores remain closed on selected Wednesdays.

【Why is the first day of the month called ついたち?】
The reason the reading of ついたち was born is because it is a transliteration of the word 月立ち(つきたち). 立ち in this case means "begin"、 when the whole phrase 月立ち means "the moon beginning".
According to the Lunar calendar (a calendar based on the monthly cycles of the moon's phases), when a “new moon" appears, the next month will come. From there, 月立ち is used to mean "first day of the month".

【Old Japan’s Glorious Art of Soba Delivery】
Back during the Tokugawa Shogunate, when Edo (now Tokyo) became the most populous place on Earth (with about 1 million people), the demae (which means “delivery men”) — men of great strength, flexibility, and endurance — roamed the streets of the city. On their shoulders were dozens of hot meals which they would have to deliver to the hungry people of Edo before the meals got cold.

【Tokyo to allow foreigners to work as beauticians in Japan】
The Tokyo metropolitan government said Friday it will allow foreigners to work as beauticians from October using a national regulation scheme, marking the first time the country's beauty industry has been opened up to them. Foreign citizens on student visas who have demonstrated skills to be beauticians and stylists at beauty schools in Japan will be allowed to work in the field for up to five years to gain experience.
From Oct. 1, foreign students who meet skills requirements will be able to work at salons on "designated activities" visas allowed under the central government's so-called national strategic special zones scheme, a program aimed at supporting regional economic growth.

【Hachiko】
Hachikō was born on November 10, 1923, at a farm near the city of Ōdate, Akita Prefecture. In 1924, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor at the Tokyo Imperial University, brought him to live in Shibuya, Tokyo, as his pet. Hachikō would meet Ueno at Shibuya Station every day after his commute home. This continued until May 21, 1925, when Ueno died of a cerebral hemorrhage while at work. From then until his death on March 8, 1935, Hachikō would return to Shibuya Station every day to await Ueno's return.
During his lifetime, the dog was held up in Japanese culture as an example of loyalty and fidelity. Well after his death, he continues to be remembered in worldwide popular culture, with statues, movies, books, and appearances in various media.
This is the last known photo of Hachiko, the faithful Akita dog.

【Yen falls to 132 against dollar, hitting 20-year low】
The yen tumbled briefly to around the 132 line Monday in New York, its weakest level in 20 years and two months, as traders flocked to sell the Japanese currency for the U.S. dollar on speculation of further widening between the two countries' interest rates. At 5 p.m., the dollar traded at ¥131.85-95, compared with ¥130.76-78 at 5 p.m. Monday in Tokyo. The euro was quoted at $1.0691-0701 and ¥141.00-10 against $1.0742-0743 and ¥140.47-51 in Tokyo late Monday afternoon.
"Japan's economy is still on its way to recovery from the pandemic and has been under downward pressure from the income side due to rising commodity prices. In this situation, monetary tightening is not at all a suitable measure," the Bank Of Japan chief said in a speech.
