And in creating materials our goals are pretty simple—to make English language learning materials that teachers enjoy using and that learners both enjoy learning from AND learn from. No magic bullets. Just a desire to ground our

materials in what is known about how people learn language. The format we follow is American Plus—that is, while American English is the main element in all our texts, we also expose students to other standard variations, increasingly important in a world in which English is more and more the way people from different nations communicate. In other words, we aim our texts at students who wish to learn American English as a tool for communication but as a tool they are likely to use in an international setting.

A new herd of ABAX books for 2024 has arrived on shore, having travelled up from the tropics!! A behind the scenes look at devanning - a shipping term that basically means unpacking a sealed container. This is at our very capable distributor's warehouse: JPT. With thanks! There is actually an amazing number of people needed to do the logistics needed to get books with LMS support into student's hands. So, a heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of people working behind the scenes making sure quality materials are delivered into student hands on time! Thank you and otsukare-sama!

CATESOL (California TESOL) being held at College of Alameda in Oakland, California. Really fun talking to teachers. Adult Literacy is a major area of interest. Quite fun hearing stories from teachers who teach students who all come from a wide variety of backgrounds, but all in the same class. The campus is also very picturesque with a large ground squirrel population.

In the studio with Melody! Recording our new TOEFL Skills 2 course in Waseda. Because of Covid precautions we recorded in the big studio! The beta is coming out now and the final version will be out in November, in time for JALT! (Compliant with the new format 2021 guidelines!)

This fall's edition of the ABAX Addition will soon be off to the printers with lots of articles on background theory and teaching! (And also our crossword!) BUT, Covid-19 has thrown a wrench in the works, in that many teachers are teaching from home, so the Abax Addition is likely to end up in a pile of papers in your mail box at school. ABAX has a Writing Book for low-level learners. (Just in case you didn't know!). AND, it comes with an LMS that automatically grades extended texts, ie paragraphs using a Type-Token Ratio. Pretty cool stuff! 😁🤓

An ABAX LMS update. We've made many updates to our LMS. But, here's one. You can now calculate student averages within the system. You just check the activities that you want to include and the system will generate an average.

Just a notice to all teachers using Abax books from this spring. Due to circumstances, Abax will be putting all of its books online for both teachers and students to access for remote teaching purposes. This site will be password protected but will be available to any and all teachers using Abax books. If you're interested, please get in touch with us about what you're using and where. The site is being built, but it should be up in a matter of days. Hope everyone is staying safe!!
