Relatives and friends will gather on Monday, 29 July 2024, to pay their last respect to 39-year-old public school teacher Cassandra Rigg, who died at the University Hospital of the West Indies during a brief period of illness.

When she passed away on June 22, she was a teacher at Jericho Primary School in her native Linstead, St Catherine and was on the verge of tying the knot with her England-based fiance’.

In the days leading up to her death, the teacher was diagnosed with brain tumor.

The service of thanksgiving for her life will commence 10AM on July 29 at the Power Of Faith Ministries on Church Road in Bog Walk, St Catherine. Interment will follow at Commodore Cemetery in Linstead.

Ahead of the thanksgiving service, a set-up will take place on Saturday, July 27 at Natty Farm Yard in Treadways district, Linstead where the late Rigg lived with her mom Deloris McCarthy.

The school where the late educator was enrolled for nearly four years, Jericho Primary, hosted a memorial service in her memory. Ahead of that event, the institution’s principal, Fabian Facey-James, spoke glowingly of Rigg during the school’s graduation ceremony.

“I can say without reservation that Cassandra Rigg has made an impact by doing the best she could with the resources that she had at her disposal,” the principal said. “She was someone who would always seek solutions to problems. It is therefore a very sad experience for us as a staff as we grapple with the loss of our colleague.”

Merlyn Grant (Miss Merl), 77, was born to Inez Murray and Frederick Grant at Jericho Road in Linstead, St Catherine parish, on Sunday, 15 September 1946.

She had eight siblings.

Confident that a sound education could have steered her from a myriad of pitfalls, her parents enrolled her at Jericho Primary School and the Kingston-based Kingsway High.

Miss Merl’s post-school life was anchored substantially on industriousness; this as she endeavored to care for herself and dependents.

She diligently served as a community health aide spanning some 30 years.

Even after she retired, her caring disposition continued to reflect in her willingness to help people with health-related issues, ranging from cuts and bruises to the common flu.

Miss Merl also was highly proficient at the sewing machine creating school uniforms, work clothes, sheets, curtains – you name it! Her other past-times included singing, baking cake and doing word-search puzzles.

But all good things must come to an end. That saying, unfortunately, bore true on Thursday 11 July 2024 when Miss Merl transitioned peacefully from this life at the St Catherine-based Spanish Town Hospital. Her funeral arrangements are being finalized.

She is survived by several friends and relatives, including her six biological children – Donovan Wright (Paragan), Devon Wright (Dave/Baza), Paul Green (Pablo G), Alfred Green (Freddy), Rohan Green (Chinna), and Christopher Green (Chris). She also raised a foster son, Jermaine Brooks (Dill).

Miss Merl, surely, is missed sorely.

LINSTEAD TEACHER DIES

Cassandra Rigg, a teacher at Jericho Primary School and graduate of Charlemont High in Linstead, St Catherine has died.

She passed away this morning at the University Hospital of the West Indies after a brief period of illness, her family told The Beacon.

She was a high school classmate and dear friend of Jamaica Beacon journalist Horace Mills, who described her as charismatic, jovial and caring.

When she was two years old, Rigg suffered third-degree burns to the chest, face and arms during a house fire said to be linked to a case of arson in Linstead, St Catherine.

Despite that incident and the discrimination she faced especially during her childhood as a result of her scars, she persevered.

“Self-worth is very important,” she told The Beacon in a 2018 interview.

“If you don’t have self-worth, you will end up having to start over and over again instead of moving forward.”

Mills recalled Rigg, just last week, inviting him to the graduation at Jericho Primary.

He added: "Cassandra was excited about the results of the Primary Exit Profile (PEP). Sadly, she dies on the day those results are being released by the education ministry. She loved teaching; she truly loved and was easy to love. Her death is really a shocker."
