It’s wrong for Stonebwoy to say he projected afro-dancehall to the world — General Marcus

Legendary Ghanaian reggae/dancehall artiste, General Marcus has stated that it is wrong for award-winning afro-dancehall artiste Stonebwoy to say he projected afro-dancehall to the world.

While speaking in an exclusive interview with AJ Sarpong on Citi FM, Stonebwoy had said: “I have been on the same stage with Shaggy, I have done Bounty Killer, Richard Stevens, Alpha Blondy, etc… I am doing a lot to project afro-dancehall…realistically I am the one who sold afro-dancehall to the world… Oh, yes, I am the one”.

Reacting to Stonebwoy’s comment in an interview with ghanaweekend.com, General Marcus stated without mincing words that it is wrong for the ‘Therapy’ hitmaker to make such a statement.

“It’s very wrong for Stonebwoy to make such a statement… In fact, it doesn’t make sense at all… What if we got up one day and Fela Kuti’s son also said his father projected afrobeat?”

Cedi ends 2022 as 2nd weakest currency in Africa, 4th worst globally – Bloomberg

The Ghana Cedi ended 2022 as the second weakest currency on the African continent with a year-to-date loss of 38.86% to the US dollar, according to Bloomberg.

Globally, the local currency placed 145th. The Sierra Leone Leone came 146th whilst the Argentina Peso and Sierra Lankan Rupee placed 147th and 148th respectively.

They were classified as the currencies with the “Worst Spot Returns” by Bloomberg.

In Africa, the Kenyan Shilling (-8.32%), The Gambian Dalasi (-15.28%), Malawian Kwacha (-20.51), New Sudanese Pound (-22.87%), Egyptian Pound (-36.46%), Ghana Cedi (-38.36%) and Sierra Leone Leone (-40.58%) were the currencies with the “Worst Spot Returns”.

IMF chief warns of ‘tough year’ for global economy

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva has warned that the global economy faces “a tough year, tougher than the year we leave behind.”

“We expect one-third of the world economy to be in recession,” Madam Georgieva told CBS’s ‘Face the Nation’ in an interview aired January 1, 2023 “Why? Because the three big economies — US, EU, China — are all slowing down simultaneously.”

The IMF already warned in October 2022 that more than a third of the global economy will contract and that there is a 25% chance of global GDP growing by less than 2% in 2023, which it defines as a global recession.

Examining the three biggest economies on CBS, Mrs. Georgieva painted a mixed picture of their ability to withstand the downturn.

While “the US may avoid recession,” the European Union has been “very severely hit by the war in Ukraine — half of the EU will be in recession next year,” she said. At the same time, China faces a “tough year.”

AGI decries bottlenecks in acquiring lands for industrial purposes

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) is calling on government to institute a policy framework for the protection of local industries against unfair competition from their foreign counterparts.

Ghana’s economy is expected to enter a road of recovery after challenging times in the year 2022.

Experts believe a buoyant local industry will help stabilize the local currency and reduce the country’s dependence on imports.

He further urged government to make access to land easier for local business as acquiring land for industrial purposes is a major challenge for investors.

“We still have a major challenge with our members acquiring land for industrial purposes. Our members had to pay for the same land three times because different owners pop up asking for the same amount of money for the same piece of land.”

“Our hope is that, we expect this challenge to end this year because we want government to ensure that lands are properly acquired for industrial purposes”, says Tsonam Akpeloo, Greater Accra chairman of the Association of Ghana Industries.

Government has already given an indication of increased investments in local production through its Ghana COVID-19 Alleviation and Revitalisation of Enterprises Support (CARES) Obaatanpa programme but the AGI believes more needs to be done to move away from consumption to production

Let’s trust God; economic quagmire will be over – Bawumia

he Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia is trusting God to turn the country’s fortunes around.

Dr. Bawumia is seeking the face of God to address the current economic challenges.

Speaking at the Dr. Thomas Wyatt Temple of The Church of Pentecost in Accra, Dr. Bawumia said government has put in place programmes and policies aimed at reviving the ailing economy.

“As a government, we do recognize the difficulties we are experiencing in the country but with renewed strength and hope in the word of God, we are forever confident that, we will ride this storm and turn things around in the glory of God. We have been working while at the same time, trusting in God. We just don’t trust in God and fold our arms, we have to work

Churches, Christians must help complete National Cathedral – Secretariat

The National Cathedral Secretariat has made a passionate appeal to churches and the Christian community to help complete the National Cathedral project.

The Secretariat said with a contribution of GH₵‎100 monthly from one million Christians, the project could be completed before the year 2024.

Speaking after President Akufo-Addo paid a working visit to the construction site, Executive Director of the National Cathedral Secretariat, Dr Paul Opoku Mensah said the church must encourage its members to contribute.

“If the Church Leaders stand with us on this project, we can easily raise One million people who will give us GH¢100 each. So essentially we need the Church to stand with us. The state has done enough, all the preparatory works have been done, and the scope of work has been done. Without the state it was impossible.”

The Parliament of Ghana is the legislative body of the Government of Ghana. Legislative representation in Ghana dates back to 1950 when the country was a British colony known as Gold Coast.

The body, called the Legislative Council, was purely advisory as the Governor exercised all legislative and executive powers. Reforms were introduced in 1916 and 1925, although the governor's power remained extensive.

In 1946, a new constitution was introduced that allowed for an unofficial member of the Legislative Council to become its president while the governor ceased to be the ex officio president of the body. This system continued until 1951 when the Legislature elected its first Speaker - Sir Emmanuel Charles Quist.

1951 was also the first year that elections based on universal suffrage were held. The Convention People's Party (CPP), which was formed in 1949 and led by Kwame Nkrumah, won the election. Another party, the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) led by J.B. Danquah, fared poorly and was disbanded soon after. Nkrumah, who had been jailed in early 1950 for subversion, was released and appointed Leader of Government Business, becoming the country's first Prime Minister the following year.

Legislative Assembly elections held in 1954 resulted in another CPP victory, with the party winning 71 out of a total of 104 seats. It also won 71 out of 104 seats in the 1956 Legislative Assembly election. The Gold Coast was renamed Ghana and granted independence on 6 March 1957, while retaining the British monarch as head of state. The Legislative Assembly was renamed National Assembly.

After the approval of a new Republican constitution, Ghana officially became a republic on 1 July 1960 with Kwame Nkrumah as its President. The plebiscite was taken as a fresh mandate from the people and the terms of National Assembly members were extended for another five years.

A one-party state was introduced following a referendum in 1964. As a result, only CPP candidates stood in the National Assembly Election held in 1965. Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966 by the military, which banned political parties and dissolved the National Assembly.

The country returned to civilian rule in 1969. Elections held on 29 August resulted in victory for the Progress Party (PP) of Kofi Abrefa Busia, which won 105 of the National Assembly's 140 seats. He took office as Prime Minister on 3 September 1969. His government was toppled in a 1972 military coup.

During the Third Republic, which lasted from 1979 to 1981, the dominant party in the National Assembly was the People's National Party (PNP), which won 71 out of 104 seats in elections held on 18 June 1979. After the military intervened in 1981, all elected institutions were dissolved and political party activity was prohibited.

After 11 years of military rule, a new constitution was approved in a 1992 referendum. Presidential elections were held in November and were won by Jerry Rawlings, leader of the 1981 coup and subsequent military ruler. The opposition contested the results and boycotted the December parliamentary elections. As a result, Rawlings' National Democratic Congress (NDC) won 189 out of 200 seats in Parliament.

All parties participated in the 1996 parliamentary elections. The NDC won 133 out of a total of 200 seats, while the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) won 60. Two small parties won the remaining seats.

The 2000 elections were significant in that President Rawlings was constitutionally barred from seeking another term.

In the presidential poll, John Kufuor of the NPP defeated the NDC candidate John Atta Mills in a run-off election. In the 200-seat Parliament, the NPP won 100, followed by the NDC's 92. Small political parties and independents won the remaining seats.

Kufuor was re-elected in 2004 and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) won 128 out of 230 seats in the concurrent parliamentary election. The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) won 94, while two other parties - The People's National Convention (PNC) and Convention People's Party (CPP) - won 4 and 3 seats, respectively. An Independent captured the remaining seat.

The simple majority (or First Past the Post) voting system is used in Ghana's parliamentary elections. Since 2012, the country is divided into 275 single-member constituencies. Members serve four-year terms.

U.S. President Barack Obama shakes hands after delivering a speech to the Ghanaian Parliament at the Parliament House Speaker - The Speaker presides over the Parliament and enforces observance of all rules that govern its conduct.

After a general election the majority party in Parliament, in consultation with other parties, nominates a Speaker. The Speaker cannot be a Member of Parliament though he/she must possess the qualifications to stand for elections as a Member of Parliament, such person on appointment as Speaker must resign and declare the seat occupied in Parliament as vacant. The Speaker is assisted by two Deputy Speakers (First and Second Deputy Speakers), who are elected at the commencement of every Parliament.

They must come from different political parties. The current Speaker is Prof. Aaron Mike Ocquaye former MP for the Dome-Kwabenya constituency of Ghana.

First Deputy Speaker - The First Deputy Speaker presides over the sittings of Parliament whenever the Speaker is absent. The current First Deputy Speaker is Joseph Osei Owusu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Second Deputy Speaker - The Second Deputy Speaker presides over the sittings of Parliament in the absence of the Speaker and the First Deputy Speaker. The current Second Deputy Speaker is Alban Bagbin of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Majority Leader - The Majority Leader is elected from the party with a majority of parliamentary seats. A deputy majority leader and a majority chief whip assist him, constituting the majority leadership of Parliament. The current Majority Leader is Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu of the NPP.

Minority Leader - The Minority leader is elected from the second-largest party in Parliament. A deputy minority leader and a chief whip assist him, constituting the minority leadership of Parliament. The current Minority Leader is Haruna Iddrisu of the NDC.

The wealthy, outspoken, "no-nonsense" politician owns a number of companies which include; Oman F.M, Ash F.M, Net 2 TV, Super Care Company Limited (Air Conditioners Dealer), Mina D’oro Ventures, M/S Imperial World Business Limited, Gold Coin Communication. Despite being known as a businessman, Kennedy‘s business transactions have been widely questioned by most people in Ghana including his peers.

He brought the city to a standstill with a single purchase, a bed. Kennedy Agyapong notes that the bed in his bedroom cost him $80,000; a whopping 3.12 Billion old Ghana Cedis. Amidst these spendings, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong's net worth is not well known since the MP has never come out clear even when confronted with these questions.

However, judging by the spending and businesses the MP owns, it’s without a doubt that Kennedy Agyapong is among the top 10 richest people in Ghana.

The Association of Ghana Industries, AGI, is urging industry players to adopt innovative ways to come out of the challenges that confront their industries.

Their call comes as businesses are currently grappling with economic challenges confronting the country.

Speaking during the Accra Regional Annual General Meeting of the Association, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of AGI, Tsonam Cleanse Akpeloo believes that the Association can navigate through the current crisis if members commit to strategic ideas
“Since the beginning of the year, industries have gone through a lot of challenges as a result of the global crisis specifically the ravaging effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian –Ukraine war. This situation has cascaded into economic and financial limitations with its attendant impact on businesses and trade,” he recounted.

He also called on government to speed up interventions to support industry players who have been badly hit by the crisis.

“We are looking forward to government to take immediate steps to support industries to overcome some of these challenges. We have consistently chosen the themes that reflect finances sources available for industries post COVID-19 and we have not deviated this time.”

“We will continue to push for alternative funding sources for industries especially for our SMEs. That notwithstanding we think if there is any dispensation that we need funding, it is now.”

“This is the opportune time to help members find the appropriate funding for their businesses. We are all concern that our industries navigate through the economic crisis especially in the midst of the high cost of the dollar against the cedi and the multiplicity of taxes.
