MANIFESTO
https://www.diid.it/about-journal.html

Over the last two decades diid has investigated design disciplines and practices, recording their development thanks to the great contribution of Italian and international scientific communities. The one we inaugurate is a new phase, where change is the key topic to be analysed and narrated, by understanding the different meanings and impacts on innovation domains. The knowledge about transformati

ons will be achieved also by tracing memories, permanence and constant patterns that affect the social realm. In the contemporary storytelling of the world, the change involves space, time and mankind willingness. We experience the transition from the Anthropocentric world to an Anthropocene era, interrelated to a possible Novacene era where technologies will dominate. Starting from the knowledge about industrial design and the different design sectors, diid will describe advanced design cultures that enable us to study design through the metamorphosis of capitalism, by means of anticipation, balance between different forces, complex systems, stakeholders and key actors, organizations and their mutual relations. diid will study the reality and its forms of representation in a fuzzy world where undefined clients and users, broad industrial players, uncertain briefs, complex solutions, unknown materials, uncontrolled effects, continuously modify its elements. The plan for a new European Bauhaus for the diffusion of design cultures, the post-pandemic rebirth, the pursuit of sustainable objectives in the 2030 Agenda, digital aesthetics and humanities, the man-machine-nature relationship, the transit towards renewable energies and the relations among nine billion inhabitants on Earth in 2050, provide, among others, a vision of the following years, that could be incredibly intense and full of thought and action, therefore full of design. diid will keep studying and recording what happens around design cultures and their correlation with sustainability issues, technologies, society and human behaviours. We will continue focusing on productive thinking, which was defined almost a century ago as the curious and original way through which a designer thinks and acts simultaneously. This same designer studies, describes, shapes and shares ideas, elaborates media and catalyzes knowledge, synthesizes and prototypes, proposes culture, transforms and invents reality. All these actions can accelerate, repair, slow down the effects of time on space, artificial, nature, and at the same time generate new forms, functions, values and meanings in relation to products, goods, services, processes, experiences and bodies.

This issue delves into the critical relationship between design practices and the concept of civis, encompassing both physical spaces and digital territories, networks, systems, and urban forms. The Open Debate section highlights how design acts as a mediator across disciplines, leveraging co-design to actively engage citizens and stakeholders in the creation and testing of services and products. A systemic approach is emphasized, showcasing design's growing role in addressing complex societal challenges through deep, context-specific solutions. The section also addresses the increasing complexity of interactions with products and systems, considering the political, economic, and legal constraints that influence these dynamics.

We are deeply grateful to our Guest Editor, Lorenzo Imbesi, for his introductory contribution in this issue, and to all the Authors who contributed their invaluable insights to DIID.

This issue explores the fascinating theme of demographics, with a special focus on the opportunities and challenges that aging and longevity bring to design. For perhaps the first time in human evolution, the average age has more than doubled in just a century. In many modernized regions, there are now more elderly people than young. This demographic shift significantly impacts the spheres in which contemporary designers operate, raising intriguing new challenges and opportunities.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our Guest Editors, Sheng-Hung Lee and Andreas Sicklinger, for their outstanding leadership in this issue.

A sincere appreciation to all the Authors who have chosen DIID as their publication venue.

The issue delves into the complexity of Culture and Creativity ecosystems in terms of relations, economic aspects, social issues and technological evolution, which are experiencing multiple and unpredictable dynamics. We are interested in focusing attention on the contribution that the cultures and practices of design lend to this phenomenon, and how the bond between design, culture and creativity, in Europe, is indivisible.
The ninth Knowledge and Innovation Community of the EIT dedicated to Culture and Creativity (EIT Culture & Creativity) is the European infrastructure devoted to unlocking the value generated by small players and large organisations and institutions in different fields (design, audio-visual, deep-tech, fashion, etc.), as an indispensable part of the European Innovation Ecosystem.
A great appreciation to the Guest Editors of this Issue, Valentina Gianfrate and Marta Materska-Samek, who lead us through this journey of creativity.

A sincere appreciation to all the Authors who have chosen DIID as publication venue.
