Nesting season is exciting, but can also be heartbreaking when hungry critters raid the nest.

I get it, nature.

This season, I was determined to make an attempt to keep our nests and eggs safe.

Some savvy bird enthusiasts suggest wrapping your tree/nesting boxes with slinky’s.

It might deter snakes, squirrels, chipmunks and other nest raiders.

No scientific evidence, but if it saves one egg or fledgling, our yard will look like a slinky factory every spring/summer.

Cammie King, Bonnie Blue Butler in GONE WITH THE WIND (1939), recalled in her memoir:

Gable, the King of Hollywood, was universally considered the sexiest man in motion pictures. Imagine then the horror with which women heard me describe what it was like to kiss him: “His mustache scratched!”

I can’t remember exactly when it happened, but sometime when I was a newly married woman, I was watching GONE WITH THE WIND on TV, and when it came to the scene of Gable and me in London, it crashed in on me: Gable—Gable the Hunk, the most handsome, desirable man on earth—is cradling me in his arms! And then I knew that to be kissed and held and put to bed by Clark Gable at the age of five was one of life’s cruelest tricks.

Being with him on set is one of the memory snapshots I hold…I remember lying in bed and listening to him rebuke the nurse. I remember his big cape. I also remember the scene where we first see Rhett and Bonnie with the horses. I think Clark was just a natural with me, and of course he was a seasoned horseman.

My real knowledge of him, however, comes from what my mother told me. She confirmed what has been written about him so often—he was a great guy. Men genuinely liked him, and women adored him. What’s endearing to me is her report that he was extremely solicitous of me, very much like a daddy. Often, after several takes on a scene, he’d say, “Come on, fellas, let’s wrap it up. The baby’s tired.”

Love this landscaping idea.

Most of us don’t have Instagram yards…..just a regular old yard that might have neighbors on 3 sides. When I saw this pic….I saved it but wasn’t sure I’d use it. It’s nothing spectacular or awe inspiring. So it sat for more than a year in my photo file. Recently having a conversation with a much younger aspiring gardener who was admiring my yard, (24yrs in the making) and despairing about how to add architectural interest when they can’t afford much….like decking, pergolas, fountains, etc. I remembered this pic and sent it as encouragement. Then I decided that most of my followers (like almost all) are regular people, just like me, trying to make a pretty yard on a budget or via DIY projects. So, here it is!
