One of our favorite blogs, "On an Overgrown Path," just responded to our 2020 post "Notes From the Ambient Church." We updated the original with an addendum to address how encoding music as notation ensured that classical music would endure. But at the same time this practice also placed limits on what is acceptable within the genre. https://schmud.de/posts/2020-04-26-ambient-church.html is a musical take on information and time.

Formally encoding Western music enabled its propagation through the centuries, creating an industry and a practice where this notation is essentially requisite.
