The next song of the Britannica project is called "Para Bellum". Of course I'm thinking fast to quirky marching snares which I'm going to track four times to get a good sense of a martial ensemble. This time I'm playing them as well as possibly the whole kit. I absolutely love playing drums, sometimes even more than playing guitar... That's music production too...
The snare is a @yamahadrumsofficial Stage Custom all birch 14x6 with @evansdrumheads skins, miced up with an @oktava.usa MK-012 condenser mic for top skin and a beloved @shure SM57 for the bottom one. Both mics go straight into two preamps of an @john.w.oram T16 desk and the to @avid.protools via an @antelope_audio Orion 32+ converter.

When I improvise a guitar solo I always pay attention to its melodic content as well as the space in between notes. Here's one of those impros I'm playing for the next song of the Britannica project which will be featured on the album "Collider" that will be released later this year.
The guitar is a Sire USA S7 going through a Boss CS3 compressor and a Crowter Hot Cake overdrive, straight into a Fender Bassman vintage '65 head driving a Peavey Electronics 4x12 cab miced up with a Shure SM57 on axis and an Audio-Technica EMEA AT4040 off axis, both blended into one track coming from a John W Oram T-16 desk's preamps.
The converter is an Antelope Audio Orion 32+.

Tracking bass guitars is seemingly straight forward, yet it actually depends on what kind of sound you want from it. Here I'm recording a Squier by Fender - Stop Dreaming, Start Bass VI baritone guitar and I'm willing to get a quite aggressive tone. I'm plugging it into my beloved Boss CS3 compressor and a Crowter Hot Cake overdrive. From these two pedals it goes into a Trace Elliot AH250 vintage head driving a Laney Amplification 1x15 cab, miced up with an AUDIX D4 straight in axis and a Sennheiser vintage MD441 picking up just the HF horn. No D.I. at all and the feedback means the Bass VI just wants to scream...

Last week i had the pleasure to have master Narayan recording a full gong concert at Think ahead studio using eight microphones. Here's Narayan showing his beautiful cymbals.

It takes a few attempts to lay down a good solo... This one is for a new song of the *Britannica" project.

Special session today at Think Ahead Studio, recording master @spazio_yoga_e_gong Narayan's gongs.
I'm using two (very inexpensive) T-Bone ribbons and two @oktava_russia MK-12 condensers as close mics, two russian ribbons as close ambient mics and two more Oktava MK-12 in Omni pattern as far ambient mics. All goes straight into the @john.w.oram T-16 preamps and to @avid.protools through the @antelope_audio Orion 32+ converters.
Juicy sounds!

When picking up sounds (especially amplified guitars, basses and keys) it's crucial where to place the microphones and which ones to use. I prefer to blend an off axis condenser (an Audio-Technica EMEA AT4040 in this case) and a ribbon (a vintage #reslomic here) and then play with phase and distance without overloading the speakers.

I guess I was born with music in my head and that's the way it's always been. The thing I love the most is to pick someone else's blink of an idea and morph it into a complete piece of music....and I love to dance too, on my own, in my studio.
Here I'm giggling at this new song I'm producing for a project involving Japanese Martian Coppé and myself. The orchestral sounds come from the stunning Spitfire Audio BBC London Symphony Orchestra library. I'm loving it!

Today I'm prepping this wonderful vintage Wüllner & Sohn upright piano for tomorrow's session with piano player Fabio Barnaba . It takes quite a long time to tune it properly but the whole process is very fascinating and mesmerising: there's so many intricate nuances between the huge number of vibrating strings, and each of them needs to be cured and taken care of just like a toddler with all his/her delicate aspects working all at once. It's a father/mother's job, really, as with any instrument we choose to play with and any human being we choose to deal with. "Taking care" is the key...
Looking forward!
