We are proud to learn that 19 yo Italian guard Matilde Villa, 5-7 from Basket Costa, was drafted by Atlanta Dream Round 3·Pick 8 (32nd overall). At the Brooklyn Academy of Music in Brooklyn, New York City, the 2024 Draft of the WNBA, the American professional women's basketball league, was staged last night.

Matilde Villa is the first Italian player ever to be selected by a WNBA franchise straight from the Italian league without going through college.

Matilde Villa also becoming the fourth Italian chosen in the history of the Draft: before her Italian legend Catarina Pollini (in the 1997 Original Draft that gave birth to the American league), Kathrin Ress (2007) and Lorela Cubaj (2022).

We believe with extreme certainty that this will be the way to the ultimate consecration for her.

''There is no need for controversy or tearing one's hair out; I understood that such a decision was in the air, I certainly do not live on the moon. I've also been a National team head coach, I know the federal dynamics, I am aware of the budget issue, and I know very well that sometimes choices have to be made. And they have to be respected. I admit just as candidly that I would have liked to continue this experience even with a view to potential Olympic participation, but, again, I do not blame any one''.

The Italian basketball federation of the federal president Giovanni Petrucci suddenly suspended any kind of collaboration with Senior assistant coach Carlo Recalcati.

Recalcati, that joined recently (2022) the Italian national team as Senior assistant coach, is the last Italian coach to lead Italy to a medal in the international competitions (silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics).

On the official federal website, the news is reported through a quote from Italian head coach Gianmarco Pozzecco.

''Tough game. We played a game of fight against Reggio Emilia. We didn't play good offensively but we put great effort on difensive side, specially in the second half.

I know that win such a tough game like this, an overtime win, is the best possible result for Olimpia Milano; doesn't matter who had won but, after 17 years, we are back in the Finals and we have a lot of time to rest, really a lot.

''Regardless of my coaching qualities, I unfortunately cannot take 10 years off his ID, 10 years off his career. He is one of our landmarks, one of the cornerstones on which we are building the groundwork for this season.

I hope his example will also usefull his teammates, especially those who play in his own spot, to raise the level of their performance, concentration, and commitment. Having him on the team is a privilege, we ask players like him, Marco (Belinelli, ed.), Daniel (Hackett, ed.) or Toko (Shengelia, ed.) - veteran by basketball path - to pass on to younger players what characterizes their uniqueness and what makes them special.

In Dunston's case we are talking about one of the best defenders in EuroLeague and having him in contact every day allows us, as coaches, and teammates to be able to appreciate his seriousness, professionalism and focus. Unfortunately, I can't clone him and I can't take years off his ID, so let's make sure we raise the bar for those who play next to him.''

David Kyle Logan has been - on a technical level - one of the best guards ever seen in the recent bleak Italian basketball scene over the past 15/20 years, really a long, long time. Like him in the same spot such phenomenal players as Larry Darnell Middleton and Vincenzo Esposito.

We don't discuss about his stuffs or his private life, we don't talk about what we don't know. We just thank Logan for what he accomplished on the court. A player who liked to talk with his hands rather than using his voice. Thank you Logan and good luck.

Torino Football Club today pays tribute two of the most legendary athletes in Italian and world soccer.

After paying homage to the memorable Gigi Riva - who passed away last Monday - at the Bonaria Cemetery, Torino FC remembers one of the greatest number 10s in Europe and in the history of soccer on his one hundred and fifth birthday: the former captain and symbol of Grande Torino (the soccer team recognized as one of the strongest in the world in the second half of the 1940s, ed.) Valentino Mazzola, tragically passed away on May 4, 1949, in Turin at the age of 30 in the Superga tragedy.

This is why, on the day of the Serie A match between Cagliari and Torino, this game can never, ever be like any other.

''Gigi's passing leaves an unbridgeable emptiness in all of us. Everyone knew the soccer player, I had the privilege of also appreciating the person: a man of integrity, serious and loyal as few.

When I first came to Cagliari 36 years ago, he was among the people who were immediately closest to me, with his discretion and confidentiality; a bond that has remained over time. When I had the chance to come back here, hearing those words 'Claudio is one of us' moved me, made me feel special.

I think now of last June. A few minutes before the final in Bari, when we were in the locker room, he called me and ask me to take his message of encouragement to the team: ''Remind the boys that the whole of Sardinia is behind them."

We didn't talk often: whishes on his birthday, the last time at Christmas. I respected him so much, I knew he would always be there for us. His passing is what I never wanted to learn''.

We have learned, with deep regret, about the resignation as head coach of Givova Scafati Basket by Stefano 'Pino' Sacripanti due to health reasons.

We have written so much about this man's sporting exploits over the years: we are not just talking about his sports goals achieved, but the lessons on the human side that Pino has been able to pass on wherever he has coached so far. His deep respect for those around him is one of the reasons why he's so beloved in the world of Italian basketball and beyond.

Personally, in the world of Italian basketball, a better person than Pino Sacripanti we do not know. And we believe that the words of Scafati's president, Nello Longobardi, prove us right:

''I sincerely thank Pino Sacripanti, to whom I feel deeply connected by a relationship of affectionate friendship, estimation and deep gratitude. Definitely not a positive night for the Italian teams EA7 Armani Olimpia Milano and Virtus Segafredo Bologna involved in Turkish Airlines EuroLeague: Žalgiris celebrated a massive 70-83 win over EA7 Armani Olimpia Milano in the 11th round of Turkish Airlines EuroLeague 2023/2024 which hauled the Lithuanian side to 5-6, while the Italian team slipped to 4-7.

On the other hand, the Congolese-Spanish center Ibaka stood out with a double-double to fuel Bayern's 90-76 victory over Virtus Segafredo Bologna at Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle, also known by its sponsorship name of BMW Park. The hosts improved to 5-6, while Italian club Virtus fell to 7-4.
