Yunus Challenges UDP to Publish Audited Account Annually

Yunus Hydara tasked the United Democratic Party Treasury to update its party's annual audited account for supporters to access in order to improve accountability and transparency of its financial dealings.

He acknowledged that fundraising is important and money is indeed one of the most important lifeblood of any political party.

"But the UDP party's treasurery should also be publishing the party's annual audited accounts or report on the party's website for supporters to access. We must commit ourselves to the same standards of accountability and transparency that we hold the government on," he urged the party's finance department.

'DICTATORSHIP COULD BE REINSTALLED IF...'

The mayor of the Kanifing Municiplaity, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, has asserted that without reforms dictatorship could be easily restored and continued. He made this remark during his recent interview in Senegal with Senegalese media entity Seneweb.

Bensouda stated: “What we wanted when we voted for Adama Barrow was ensure reform. It is reform that guarantees democracy. But if there are no such reforms, dictatorship could be reinstalled. After we voted for him, he should have carried out a constitutional reform, civil sector reform, security sector reform.

“Also a lot of things happened, wherein Jammeh killed many, tortured many and imprisoned many, but the justice we anticipated has not been achieved until now. These reforms have not been achieved. That is why we stand and continue to oppose, saying that Gambians did not want this, and this was not why Gambians voted for Adama Barrow.”

Bensouda stated that these are their reasons for opposing the Barrow Administration, and that if they come to power, they will ensure the reforms that Gambians have been expecting.

Female Marabout Says She Receive Money From Jinns

A witness testified at the Kanifing magistrates' court before magistrate Colley alleging that Amie Saine told people in Bakau that it was Jinns that were providing money for her.

Amie Saine is accused of pretending to exercise witchcraft or tell fortunes contrary to section 294 of the criminal code, three counts of obtaining goods by false pretence and two counts of obtaining money by false pretence.

The witness (named withheld) told the court that Amie Saine would show the money collected from her and her family members that it's Jinns that are providing that money for her (the accused person)

The witness informed the court that Amie told them that she has a family of Jinns, and the oldest is called Alagie Musa Hydara.

"Amie assured us whatever Alagie Musa asked. we should provide because he is going to give it back with a lot of money in return. She would ask me to give her money from my sales as a businesswoman. I can remember giving her D24,000.00 from my sales. She would ask me to give her money from my daily sales, and I would do as she asked," the witness narrated to the court.

She told the court that Amie Saine is always with a chewing stick rapped in a red piece of cloth.

She further informed the court that the accused person will sometimes take foodstuff and goods from their container but would never pay for them.

The witness said she trusted the accused person, and that's why she would always give her whatever she demanded.

The case would resume for continuation of witness testimony on the 9th of September, 2024

Presidential aspirant urges gov't to act on illegal exchange rate

Mr Ousman Jallow, the presidential aspirant for 2026 presidential elections and the chairman of Progressive Movement of The Gambia, has expressed concerns over the instability and rampant deflation in the country's foreign exchange market.
Mr Jallow was speaking to The Point on Wednesday regarding the status of the foreign exchange in the country.

Jallow said the government should prioritise issues that are affecting Gambians daily rather than concentrating on the draft constitution. “The exchange rate has no control and no legal monitoring process,” he said.
He highlighted that the volatility of the exchange rates is what is driving the prices of basic commodities across the country.

“It is not a hidden fact; every Gambian and even non-Gambian knows that most exchange rate dealers operate illegally and illegally increase exchange rates without any authorisation, this is just next to fraud,” he alleged.
Besides, Jallow pointed out the numerous Western Union branches that provide incomplete services to both Gambians and non-Gambians.

He alleged that Gambians are now subscribed to using Wave, Western Union, Ria, or MoneyGram, among others but are not properly monitored and regulated giving them the latitude to exploit their customers.
He called on the Barrow administration to take immediate action by enhancing monitoring and regulation of the foreign exchange bureaus to safeguard consumers and ensure fair play in the business.

He advocates for better reporting mechanisms to deliver accurate information on exchange rates and services.
By effectively addressing these issues, Jallow believes the government can stabilise the market, restore public confidence, and contribute to a healthier economy.
