“In a Michelin-starred restaurant, a lot of work goes into the visible aspects of the dining experience, from the plating to the service to the atmosphere. The ingredients don’t necessarily have to be the best of the best because you can use different techniques to give flavour and fragrance, while the service is more complex to manage. Simplicity, however, is founded on two single elements: the choice of ingredients, which has to be excellent, and the preparation, which has to be correct. That’s what cooking is about for me.”

Toponimia x C41: Bella means beautiful but it's a town too
“Toponimia is a cartographic journey into Italian topography. A research project born on Instagram from the minds of Clementina Grandi and Delfino Sisto Legnani. Toponimia has an amazing community that contributes daily to the sharing of incredible findings to explore Italy with irony. Today Toponimia launches their first capsule collection, which features a goodie conceived in collaboration with C41: Bella T-shirt.
"Bella" is the Italian word for "beautiful", in its feminine adjective form. Beautiful is what pleases the senses or mind aesthetically, what C41 has been advocating for since the very beginning. "Bella" is used in the Milan slang when agreeing on something or even when saying goodbye. "Bella" is a city in Italy too.”

The exhibition presents a series commissioned by C41 to the Australian-born photographer. The selection of photos mirrors his first walk through the North of Milan, which turns out to be an investigation of the city’s periphery’s vernaculars.
"I always find that turning up somewhere and responding to your initial impression
is a good way to go. It’s like trusting your instinct a bit, but for me, this is a super foreign landscape and the topography and materiality feel different. The light is amazing, of course. Just today we had this amazing Northern Italian light, which is something that I miss a lot, not being in Europe anymore. That fresh response has been quite helpful in interpreting the architecture initially."

So many years have passed, however, since that distant 2017 when the project first took shape, that at times even Black Same, Diak Deezy and Jxmmyvis barely recognise each other. That’s a good thing for a group whose greatest fear is becoming something precise and pigeonholeable, something “you might later regret”, as the guys from Nola (Naples) tell me over the phone.”

Extrema Ratio: C41 and BiM's collaboration with Università degli Studi di Milano Bicocca
"BiM and C41 present Extrema Ratio in collaboration with Università degli Studi Milano-Bicocca to recontextualise the installation of the same name by Caritas Ambrosiana on prison conditions and the re-education of prisoners. Caritas’ nomadic initiative is an eight-square-meter cell set up in collaboration with inmates of Bollate Prison, a shared living space overcrowded in everyday life by people, stories, and personal objects. The dislocation of such a characterized living space leads it to be even more vulnerable as it is exposed to encounters with a place and strangers invited to experience on their own skin the discomfort of imprisonment and the claustrophobia of not belonging to a dwelling to be called home."

"In a certain sense, the music of twenty-eight-year-old Tommaso Pandolfi, aka Furtherset, is a cathedral: it surrounds you, overwhelms you, and intimidates you. Above all, listening to his music means getting lost and then finding yourself in a sharp, almost blunt, certainly extreme ambient sound: songs in a zero gravity situation, between vintage Tim Hecker, the solemnity of GAS, and certain shoegaze drifts by Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. With his new album The Infinite Hour, Furtherset talks about himself and his demons. C41 presents The Streams of Time on Stone Dreams single official video together with a conversation with the artist himself."

Small Small Space : from newsstand to project space
“Small Small Space is located in the central area of the city, near the city's main court and San Babila. The space has so much history: it was a flower shop, then a newsstand... People in the area have so many memories connected to it. They often tell us about the time when, in front of the gallery, there was a lot of lawyers in suits using that street as a shortcut between offices and the court, "and, especially at Christmas time, you could hardly get through", to quote some.”

The word storytelling has been so badly treated and over abused in recent years that it has almost become a bit of a joke. And yet we must always have a story ready. A story is always the best answer and it gets you out of trouble too. A story is a stratagem that works in every situation. Having a story also helps us get to know each other better. But not everybody with a story to tell is able to tell it and use it. So, without that talent, what happens to your story?”

Founded 20 years ago, the festival is held at Empire Polo Field in Indio, California, on an enormous desert plain.
