Tra le rivoluzioni portate dallo Spaghetti Western c’è anche il racconto della donna, non più solamente una figura marginale – vedova, locandiera o pr******ta – ma protagonista della storia.
La visione di registi audaci, in concomitanza con il ‘68 e la lotta femminista, ha intercettato queste tematiche. Lina Wertmüller, con Il mio corpo per un poker è stata la prima regista a dirigere un Western, ma le protagoniste del genere sono molte, da Claudia Cardinale a Nicoletta Machiavelli, fino alla cantante Lola Falana, protagonista del Black Western, Lola C**t. I registi italiani – ma anche il francese Christian-Jaque con Le pistolere – portano sul grande schermo delle figure femminili moralmente autorevoli e spietate, che annullano le differenze di genere anche attraverso l’assenza di trucco e l’uso di volti impolverati e sudati, come gli antieroi maschili. I costumi giocano una parte altrettanto importante, mettendo in dialogo giarrettiere e abiti femminili con capi in pelle, cappelli da cowboy, stivali texani e pistole.

Among the revolutions introduced by the Spaghetti Western is the portrayal of women, not merely as marginal figures like widows, innkeepers, or prostitutes, but as true protagonists of the story.
The bold vision of several directors, aligned with the spirit of 1968 and the feminist movement, embraced these themes. Lina Wertmüller, with The Belle Starr Story, was the first woman to direct a Western, but there are many other leading female figures in the genre, from Claudia Cardinale to Nicoletta Machiavelli, all the way to singer Lola Falana, the star of Black Western, Lola C**t. Italian directors – as well as the French Christian-Jaque with Les Pétroleuses – brought to the screen morally authoritative and ruthless female characters who challenged gender distinctions, even through the absence of makeup and the use of dusty, sweaty faces, just like male antiheroes. Costumes also played a key role, mixing garters and feminine dresses with leather, cowboy hats, boots, and guns.
