Borgo Turrito, in the heart of the Tavoliere 🍷
Luca Scapola manages the family estate @borgoturrito.it where he only a few years ago decided to start bottling the wine. In the past, they were mainly focused on selling bulk wine.
In 2016, he started the winery under the brand name Borgo Turrito. And, in just a few years he has come very far.
His focus is on the Nero di Troia grape, making the rosé wine ➡️ Calarosa and also a second rosé that is a blend of Primitivo and Nero di Troia.
He makes three different red Nero di Troia wines - Nero di Troia Terra Cretosa, 1221, and Lingue di Terra - each with their very own interpretation of the Nero di Troia grape.
He is also in the making of a Nero di Troia sparkling wine with the Champenoise method, that will be ready by next year.
Apart from the Falanghina, that is a fresh and fruity and citrusy white wine, Luca also has experimented with a Moscato dry white wine that he has matured in oak. Now, it might not be the grape you think of when aging white wine in oak but this is a wine with an amazing complexity. He only makes 300 bottles though so far...of the 2016 vintage, at least.
Thank you, Luca, for inviting me to explore your winery.

A winery where you feel at home 🍷
The third winery that we visited last Saturday was Fattoria di Montemaggio in Radda, or more precisely between Panzano and Radda.
As you might remember from my earlier posts, I was touring wineries with friends last Saturday. Letizia, Chiara, and Alberto had given me the task to chose the itinerary, etc.
Fattoria di Montemaggio is a small winery in the Chianti Classico area, subzone Radda, that produces Chianti Classico wines, of course, but also a sparkling Brut, a Chardonnay matured in oak, a Sangiovese rosé wine, and three IGT Toscana wine. One of these latter wines is a monovarietal Pugnitello 🍇 wine.
They only make very few bottles of the Pugnitello wine so far, but they recently grafted Pugnitello unto Malvasia Nera rootstocks so soon another or two blends with Pugnitello are coming. I got to taste a sip of a sample of the coming Pugnitello and Merlot blend, if I remember well, and it was very exciting.
🔸️To be transparent, I wanted to say that I work with Montemaggio as a content and social media manager, let's say with communication in general.
Fattoria di Montemaggio organizes wine tours and tastings every day, so go pay them a visit if you are in Tuscany.
Thank you Francesco and Stefano. Cheers 🍷

Wine as Powerful as Fire 🔥🍷
Well, that might be a bit exaggerated. LOL
However, it is always great to taste wines that give an expression to the local territory, that tell a story, that transmit a feeling to you.
Right❓
Share this reel as a Story if you like Friuli wines❗
Valentino Butussi is a winery located in Corno di Rosazzo, along the old Roman road Forum Julii that in ancient times connected Cividale del Friuli with Aquileia.
The winery was founded in 1910 and today it is Filippo Butussi who runs the family winery.
I met Filippo the other day for lunch at IlSantoBevitore together with a group of other journalists.
He told us about his family winery and his wines, of course.
I was intrigued by the fact that they use barrels created by local coopers in Friuli, in that way giving value to a local tradition. I think you feel it especially in the white wines, I am generally not much for white wines fermented or aged in oak but here it felt more like enhancing the wine than just overwhelming it as often happens.
We tasted
🥂Genesis Sauvignon Blanc 2019 and 2014
🥂Pinot Grigio ramato 2020
🥂Madonna d'Aiuto Pinot Grigio 2019
🍷Santuari Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
🍷Godje Refosco dal peduncolo rosso 2016
🍷Picolit 2012
My favorites as you might have guessed were the Pinot Grigio, Refosco, and Picolit. The Refosco, that I know many can find a bit hard to drink, is really a wine with a lot of character.

The wonders of Ciliegiolo di Narni 🍇
Narni is a beautiful hilltown in southern Umbria, close to the border with Lazio, where they produce Ciliegiolo di Narni.
The Ciliegiolo di Narni is considered a particular clone of Ciliegiolo. The Ciliegiolo is native to Tuscany, especially Maremma, and Umbria, and later research has shown that Sangiovese is one of its parent grapes.
Yesterday, after a morning spent between one missed train and one very much delayed train, I still managed to taste through all the Ciliegiolo di Narni wines.
🍷 Leonardo Bussoletti
🍷 Tenuta Cavalier Mazzocchi 1919
🍷 Cantina Sandonna
🍷 Ruffo della Scaletta
🍷 Tenuta Fabbrucciano
The tasting was followed by a lovely lunch at Rocca di Narni, an old castle with a bit of a sturm un drang feeling around it all.

What is Fivi?
Well, it is an Italian association of independent vintners ➡️ FIVI - Federazione Italiana Vignaioli Indipendenti. The members need to be
✅ the sole owner of their farm/winery;
✅ grow their own grapes (it is not allowed to buy grapes from others);
✅sell the wines under their own label.
The wineries are often fairly small or at most mid-sized, some of them are not only artisanal winemakers but also natural winemakers.
The association organize its yearly wine fair since 10 years, with the exception of 2020, where many of the Fivi members showcase their wines. I had, actually, not attended the wine fair before because I often had other engagements but I also found it too chaotic with too many people queuing to taste wines at the booths. However, it is indeed an optimal occasion for smaller and larger vintners to present their wines to the public.
The cool thing is that they can also sell their wines. In fact, you can get your own shopping cart 🛒 and buy as you taste your way through your favorite vintners. I only tasted the wines because I was traveling there by train.
I had fun passing by the stands of ‘old’ vintner friends and discovering new wineries that I had not tasted before. 🍷 From my wine producer friends in Tuscany to Campania, Puglia, Calabria, Friuli, Lombardy...and many more.
Below, are only a few wine friends who made the weekend at the Fivi fair a great experience.

Montefalco turns you upside down with love for Sagrantino
😀🇮🇹🍷😉
Every year you feel more and more at home in Montefalco during the event for the Anteprima Sagrantino. This is a wine with lots of tannins but, as the winemakers tell us, when doing good work in the vineyard above all it is a grape that gives rise to very elegant and powerful wines.

Liberation Times...according to Carol & Katarina
Today, on the 25th of April, Italy celebrates Liberation Day.
This is the commemoration of a historically important moment in Italian history, meaning the liberation from oppressive regimes.
Tomorrow, we are also liberating ourselves of some of the pandemic restrictions that have been in vigor for the last months.
Two very different liberation moments.
Yet, both to celebrate.
Your thoughts?
