È allo strumentista, compositore e direttore d’orchestra cremasco Giovanni Bottesini – il quale nell’Ottocento, con le sue geniali soluzioni tecniche, seppe far assurgere uno strumento “di spall
a” come il contrabbasso alla dignità di interprete solista – che si intitola il Concorso internazionale per contrabbassisti “Giovanni Bottesini”: una manifestazione musicale praticamente unica nel suo genere e, come dimostrato dalle sue diverse edizioni, seguita e apprezzata a livello mondiale. Ogni tre anni esso riunisce a Crema giovani ma già esperti esecutori delle più diverse nazionalità, desiderosi di sottoporsi al vaglio della giuria internazionale di virtuosi presieduta dal maestro Franco Petracchi. Il severo programma da predisporre e le rigorose prove selettive culminano nel concerto finale che, con la proclamazione dei vincitori e l’assegnazione dei premi, costituisce una vera e propria consacrazione ufficiale per gli addetti ai lavori. Accanto alle audizioni ufficiali (aperte al pubblico a partire dalla seconda prova), il concorso prevede generalmente anche delle manifestazioni collaterali dedicate a Giovanni Bottesini o allo strumento che lo rese celebre: concerti sinfonici e cameristici, pubblicazioni di musica inedita, esposizioni di strumenti antichi e moderni.

Today is the anniversary of the death of Giovanni Bottesini, the 'Paganini of the Double Bass' born in Crema on 22 December 1821 🎻
We would like to remember and celebrate him with a quote from François Fétis
"Bottesini surpassed by a long way what all other double bass concert performers have managed up until today. The heavenly sound he drew from his instrument, the incredible surety with which he overcame any arduous difficulty, his sentimental, sensistive way of singing, all made him a great performer and demonstrate in him the most complete talent one could ever imagine. Thanks to the skill with which he could draw out his harmonics in all positions, Bottesini could compete, without losing, with the most able violinists.”

The 'Bottesini Competition was founded in 1989 by Maestro Franco Petracchi and is held every 2 years. It is the premier worldwide competition for double bass players and celebrates Giovanni Bottesini's legacy.
By winning this prestigious competition musicians can link themselves to the Maestro himself. Its rigorous program ensures that only the best young talents participate.
From 1989 to 2019, seven editions have produced winners who now hold key roles in top international orchestras. As we head towards the 2024 edition, the Associazione Bottesini continues to honor Bottesini’s legacy with concerts, performances, and masterclasses, solidifying its importance in the world of double bass.
