“Reading Morandi is a collection of photographs taken by Mary Ellen Bartley during her artist residency at Casa Morandi, Giorgio Morandi’s home and studio in Bologna, and at his summer home in nearby Grizzana. The book is published in conjunction with the exhibition Mary Ellen Bartley: Morandi’s Books at Museo Morandi. The folded images, outtakes and incidental photographs taken during her stay, draw attention to the peripheral, as what was in the center moves to the edge of the page. These pages bound together offer a quiet dialogue between the traces Morandi left, in the books he studied, the objects he painted, and the atmosphere of his most intimate spaces.”

L’Artiere will be present at Arles Book Fair 2024 during les rencontres de la photographie d’Arles.

The Rencontres d’Arles and France PhotoBook are delighted to be hosting Arles Books Fair 2024 from 4nd to 6th July at the École nationale supérieure de la photographie (ENSP) and Collège Saint-Charles.
This year’s photography book fair, celebrating the wealth and variety of publishing practices, will welcome more than seventy publishers. The event will be packed with a programme of meetings  with photographers and authors.
Arles Books Fair will be open to the public from Tuesday 4nd to Saturday 6th July 2024 from 1pm  
to 7.30pm.

We are very happy to announce that two of ours books has been shortlisted for the 2024 Author Book Award:photo “Catholic Girl” design by and “Napoli” design by .pez .
 
The shortlisted books will be exhibited from July 1st to September 29, 2024 during the festival, at Mécanique Générale. 
The announcement of the winners of the 2024 Book Awards from this shortlist will be made on Tuesday, July 2st at the Night of the Théâtre Antique in Arles.

« The oldest known depiction of pregnancy is the Venus of Willendorf (c. 25,000 BC), discovered in Austria in 1908. It’s a limestone figurine with pendulous breasts and fertile hips. One night in the summer of 2023 when I was developing the last negatives for this project the temperature in my darkroom reached 100 degrees. Overwhelmed by the heat and the intensity of these images, I left the negatives in a water holding bath overnight. When I went to hang them up the next morning I was horrified when the emulsion began sliding down the plastic base of the film. I hurriedly held up one of the sheets of film to the light box and took a photograph. Suddenly, there was a Venus of Willendorf of my own.
Now, I see the shape or spirit of Venus in each one of these portraits, images of seen and unseen transformations that give rise to human life. I also see my own inspiration to understand and describe the pregnant form — fertility, fecundity, hope, birth, precarity and even time itself. »

Nel corso degli anni il mio archivio si è costantemente ampliato arricchendosi di nuove parole, come un vocabolario in continuo aggiornamento: è come se avessi sognato di avere una storia d’amore con qualcuno che per anni ha rappresentato un ideale fuori dalla mia portata, impossibile da incontrare per davvero, finché poi quel qualcuno si é reso più accessibile, prendendo una sua fisionomia reale e avvicinandomi fino ad invitarmi a stare insieme. All’inizio ho accolto questo invito con titubanza e imbarazzo ma poi mi sono sentito sempre più a mio agio e il piacere di frequentarsi è via via cresciuto fino a diventare insostituibile. Quel qualcuno non è più la figura ideale che avevo in mente, ha difetti e limiti, ma esiste ed è lo specchio della mia storia. Continuo ad aggiungere parole a quel vocabolario e spero di avere la forza di continuare a farlo a lungo, con la preziosa sensazione di avere finalmente messo le basi per il mio universo di frammenti.

C’est avec une très grande tristesse et une totale sidération que nous apprenons aujourd’hui la disparition de Carolle Bénitah. Carolle nous a toujours énormément impressionné par sa délicatesse, sa force, et son immense capacité créative.
La même capacité qu’elle a partagé avec nous en travaillant ensemble.
Collaborer avec elle a été un merveilleux cadeau.
Jamais nous ne t’oublierons…
