The Plan Journal

The Plan Journal TPJ is a spin-off from THE PLAN, the Maggioli SpA Publishing Group’s flagship magazine.

THE PLAN Journal (TPJ) intends to disseminate and promote innovative, thought-provoking and relevant research, studies and criticism in architecture and urbanism. The idea to launch the TPJ was born out of the realizations that academia is too often conducting research disengaged from the challenges and problems confronted in the professions and that in practice research can be afforded, with limi

ted platforms for dissemination, only in a small number of cases of professional organizations. The ultimate purpose of the TPJ is thus to enrich the dialog between research and professional fields, in order to encourage both applicable new knowledge and intellectually driven modes of practice. In fact, the TPJ is a spin-off from THE PLAN, the Maggioli SpA Publishing Group’s flagship magazine established in 2001. Initially bi-lingual (Italian and English), THE PLAN(link is external) is now published also in two other versions (full-English and Chinese) and it enjoys a worldwide distribution as well as a reputation of one of the most acclaimed architecture and design magazines on the market. It is our intention to fully leverage the dialog and synergies that can be developed between the TPJ and the flagship magazine, precisely to fulfil the journal’s commitment to enrich the connections between research and practice. To steer the journal on a most appropriate direction, the TPJ will enjoy the advice of an international Advisory Editorial Board, consisting of a highly diverse pool of distinguished experts, scholars and academic and professional leaders.

In the essay “At Home with the Collective: Hilberseimer, Labor Unions, and the Women’s Movement,” author Alexander Eisenschmidt shares: “Ludwig Hilberseimer’s proposals for new types of living for a new kind of liberated individual [that] are particularly instructive today as they rethought housing as a right, allied with unions in order to rethink its financial models, and learned from activists in the Women’s Movement to question the dominant narratives around heteronormative family structures and domestic labor.” Eisenschmidt encourages us to reconsider housing from private to social living conditions. We hope you read this excellent essay addressing the right to housing!

In “A Modular Approach to Colonia Landscapes in Texas’ Lower Rio Grande Valley,” authors Ian Caine and Gabriel Díaz Montemayor explain: “The holistic, modular approach allows for the flexible growth and decline of the community over the course of one hundred years. Ultimately, the transitional, modular model challenges the adversarial environmental, social, and economic arrangements that exist in colonia developments, imagining a more sympathetic relationship between people, water, and land.” Check out the creative approach proposed for landscape and housing in this well-timed article!

𝑻𝑷𝑱 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬/𝟓 - In “Beyond What Is Right,” Editor-in-Chief Maurizio Sabini states: “Architecture has been historically a male dominated profession and field of inquiry. Even during Modernism, when the promise of a freer, more liberated and more emancipated humanity was the premise for an aesthetic and ethical revolution, architecture was hostage to historically consolidated gender-biased preconceptions and stereotypes, in blatant contradiction to declared and embraced principles of social and cultural progress.” We encourage you to learn more about design equality in the “Gender Matters” issue of 𝑇𝑃𝐽!

The(ir) research aims to verify whether transitional housing for refugees and foreigners can be located within urban centers, and how they should be part of a broader (urban and social) regeneration project.” The authors emphasize that it is important to recognize refugees and foreigners’ “right to beauty.” Check out this thought-provoking article!

𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰/𝟒 - Check out Christophe Van Gerrewey’s 𝑇𝑃𝐽 book review of 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐵𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 (2016) by José Aragüez! 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐵𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 starts with a collection of texts by thirty authors discussing a building of their choice. Aragüez continues to invite six additional authors to react to these texts. Ten essays complete the book that address theory and architectural education topics related to structures. 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐵𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 is a compilation of forty-six essays in all. Van Gerrewey explains that “in these texts, critical but interpretative writing about buildings reveals their common importance - as works of architecture in which every component not only tries to shelter human bodies but also human minds.” This 𝑇𝑃𝐽 contribution entitled “Exaltation of Apartness? ‘The Building’” is well worth reading!

𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰/𝟑 - What can we learn from Modernism vis-à-vis our current climate change challenges? Thoughts and ideas in Modern Architecture and Climate: Design before Air Conditioning by Daniel Barber ask this question. This book review by Brian Ford discusses the impact of the building environment on the natural environment. The book, as Barber states, “operates at the intersection of careful, theoretical elaboration of architectural-historical complexities and urgency of the climate crisis.” Ford promotes the book: “its captivating, historical narrative provides meaningful lessons for a present-day audience.”

𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰/𝟐 - Have you read Robert J. Koester’s critique of 𝐹𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝐸𝑐𝑜-𝐶𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑆𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝐶𝑖𝑡𝑦-𝑅𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠: 𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑎’𝑠 𝑈𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑄𝑢𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑛 𝐸𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝐶𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑧𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 by Ernest J. Yanarella and Richard S. Levine? Koester explains that the “book examines the origination and development of the sustainability movement, addresses the spectrum of weak to strong sustainability definition and understanding, and singularly isolates sustainability as an iterative (rather than linear) balance-seeking process (rather than pathway) of stakeholder participation as it introduces the conceptual elements of that process in support of a new vision for urban settlement.” Koester’s contribution to 𝑇𝑃𝐽 is definitely a must read!
