The Fire ...... December 4th 1971.

The alarm was raised at 4:20pm. 2,000 people had been evacuated from the venue. 80 firemen, from Montreux and Villeneuve, attended the scene, assisted by 19 police officers. The local police force launched a search for a group of three young people. A witness reported having been sitting just behind a young
man, who was wearing a brown shirt, who had launched two rockets which didn't have any effect, then, immediately after, a third which lodged itself in the
triangles of light wood, reeds and bamboo in the suspended ceiling of Le Sablier. Some time later, the arsonist was identified, charged and convicted. The police investigation learned that work was being done on the premises prior to the concert, and that several doors, which could have slowed the fire's progress,had been removed. Containers on the premises, which should have held water, actually held paraffin! The following day's special edition of the newspaper, Journal de Montreux, said, "The Montreux Casino exists no more", and referred to the disaster at St. Laurent Du Pont, in October, 1970. The new casino in Montreux was eventually built in 1975
