We are now officially capable and willing to cut records for you! After a long process of both machine restoration and learning we can now cut both 7 inch and 12 inch records in small numbers, with outstanding sound quality. We can cut from digital files or analog tape. Please get in touch if you want to know more! Shipping possible for those outside of iceland.

First custom-shaped records getting cut last night here at the phono lab! We can laser-cut any shape you like, as long as there is still enough room for your music :). This limited run is the latest single Sumarið from Steinþór Máni (age 9) and his brother Úlfar (age 13). It also dropped on streaming platforms last night ♥️🔥. Brilliant to be putting such an "old" medium in such young hands eh!

Our beautiful little (big!) pair of EMT plate reverbs here at . The one on the left is solid-state, built in 1970. It was donated to us during the studio build by the wonderful folks at Angel Studios, London. I can never be grateful enough to who hired a van and drove it all the way to the freight ferry in Hull, to send it on its 2-week voyage to Iceland...
The second one was found here in Iceland, in a sometimes flooding basement. Built in 1959 and mono, It's amp was missing and I bought it cheap. Found a tube amp in Italy with thanks to my friend Pietro ♥️. began the rewiring during his stay with us, and I must finish it soon!
These are some of our most prized pieces and they get used on every record that is made here. And the fact that they came to us with such generous goodwill and kindness is something I cherish and am very grateful for ♥️. I have plenty more stories like this, so will post them here in due course 😍

This week has been far removed from music and gear twiddling, yet an incredible amount of noise and progress was made...Two new doorways cut at ! One for the future stone workshop and another for the print workshop. We had been wanting to do this for years! You can see that my hoarding of massive old transformers came in handy when directing the water from the massive concrete saws... And just look at how massive they are. The wall is about 70cm thick

We have now officially gone 24-track in tape terms! After lots of work bringing this old horse back to life, our Telefunken M15A shall now make records again (30+ yrs later!). We can now also do 24-track tape transfers, so dust off that master and send it to us. Pic 3 is where we had to rip apart the control room wall to feed the mass of cables through for it's mega sci-fi remote control. "The reson for hardcore vibes" folks!...

The third single from the debut LP is out today, accompanied by a classy bone-shakin' pistol grippin' video! They came all the way from Liverpool to our pirate ranch in the wild East, to record what is a brilliant set of songs. All to tape, and this is one of the songs that was mixed fully analog also. Everything was distorted, just like life in a way.... Link for the video is in the bio ^^^^.

We had a really fun weekend recording songs for the national song competition, organised by Menningarstofa Fjarðabyggðar. Teenagers from all over the East came to our studio and got the chance to put down their masterpieces of music. Thanks to all involved! :D

TUSK are Birgir Baldursson on drums, Pálmi Gunnarsson on basses, Eðvarð Lárusson on guitars and Kjartan Valdimarsson on keys. They were in session the past two days here. Sublime Improv/impro vibes, smells of saturated tape and coffee, rain, sun, and plenty of laughs. Franklin Brice was in all the way from NZ as assistant engineer & tape-op.

Drummer Sefton searched for some quirky percussion and found something that comes with its own overloaded sound plus reverb tail! Just... Wow! The mic is not overloading here, it's just how this thing sounds. It made its way onto the album needless to say...

Highest suspicions of tape machine parts failing... Yet it turned out to be a HF crosstalk issue causing the squealing... Little did we realise that when running our MX70 at the lower tape speed of 7.5 the trivial maneuver of bouncing between adjacent tracks is very risky, and in most cases impossible. Nasty high frequency feedback ensued, forcing us to bounce much further, to the other edge of the tape in fact. There's plenty of feedback on this album, but this was just not groovin' it

Dream Wife joined us here at the Fish Factory art residency (where this studio resides) in October 2020 to work on songs for their next album. After more than a year passing we finally got around to publishing their lovely interview! While here they recorded demos in 'Silo of those new songs as well as a Silo Tape Session. The Tape Session is featured in the interview video, with songs from their current album “So When You Gonna…”. It is also available in full on the Studio Silo youtube channel.
It was so nice to have Dream Wife here with us and we look forward to hearing their next album when it gets released into the world!

The ground is solid ice here right now and winter has truly arrived... It was a real pleasure to have over from the big city, starting the work on their upcoming album. The basics of ten great songs in two days, all to tape. We tracked everything live and bounced from tape to pro tools on-the-fly. No edits, no punch-ins, no overdubs. These guys were so well prepped with some songs being a first take master. The sound was impeccable! We tracked almost everything thru our various tube preamps, sent stuff out to spring reverbs, EMT 140 and echo chamber, and the mic list went something like this;
Kick - M99 / Snare - Calrec CB21 / rack tom - C451 / floor tom - C414BULS / Hihats & overheads - KM54 X3 / Drum Room - Coles 4038 pair / bass amp - D25 / guitar amps - infinity G2 ribbons & Shure unidynes / echo chamber - SE300 pair

We can't wait to hear this album when it's finished!

We will also be adding to our analogue capabilities very soon with a Telefunken M15A 2 inch 24 track, a soundcraft 2 inch 16 track and an Otari 1 inch 8-track. It was a real treat to have with us for a long weekend, working on new songs, drinking lots of coffee (a lot!), and grilling steaks in Iceland's Autumn rain. We recorded everything to the Otari 16track tape recorder and then straight to hard disk for safekeeping. All live takes and it all sounded splendid! Wonderful musicians and great songs taking shape.

We have many sick (actually sick) tape recorders in the Lab awaiting some TLC, but this recent arrival is exciting our Analog hearts the most as of late! Hopefully it shall see some sweet music on it's magnetic heads soon in the 'Silo. 24 channels of 1980s German Engineered spectacularity! Let's hope it lives up to its legendary brand name!
