Duran Duran in Iceland

The Cultural Critic on the cultural walk
DURAN DURAN in the Pool-Valley-Arena

The eve of George Michael’s birthday, NFI’s cultural critic along with the better half of Icelandic nation assembled in the big arena of the Pool-Valley. Ironically, Duran Duran threw a concert on the birthday of their ex-rival.

There was great anticipation for the event, many people having missed out on Secret Solstice the previous weekend and therefore gotten thirsty for a good concert experience.

As a warm-up band, Duran Duran chose the dream pop/indie pop band Vök. A great band but whether it hit the right spots with the fans of Duran Duran can be disputed. When the main act went on stage, people got what they wanted right away, hit after hit. Theor performance was powerful and the addition of new background singers very well appreciated. The arena buzzed and people danced and sung along.

Simon Le Bon wore white pants with a white blazer, but a weird printed blue-ish T-shirt underneath, the critic’s largest disappointment. Maybe in order to compensate for Simon’s T-shirt, Nick Rhodes wore a goldish outfit that matched the dresses of the background singers.

Like often with music events in Iceland (see the critic’s review of the Guns ‘n Roses concert from last summer), it seems like nobody thought to have proper drink selling. No ice was served in mixed drinks and not to mention luxuries like limes or lemons. All drink units had to be opened so they could not be used as weapons, even though noone was searched upon entrance for actual weapons.

The band was great and to noones surprise, sure know how to get people in the mood.

The Cultural Critic - A Star is Born Tribute
The Cultural Critic - 13.05. 2019
A Star is Born tribute concert in the Old Cinema.
Last Friday, singer Stefanía Svavarsdóttir and singer/guitarist Svenni Þór performed with their band a tribute concert to the soundtrack of A Star is Born. Stefanía is a name in the music business and maybe most known for having sung with the famous group Stuðmenn a few years back. Svenni is the husband of Eurovision pop star Regína Ósk.
The turnout was great and most of the audience was women from all kinds of sewing clubs. This was the second concert but they debuted the show at the Green Hat in Akureyri. This time around, the concert was held on a Friday night from 10 PM, and as most people know sewing club women tend to drink together on Fridays. Hence, the atnosphere was quite lively.
The movie has become quite the cult movie, and though the critic did not know all the songs from the movie the performance of them was good. Of course one misses Gaga and Cooper but Stefanía and Svenni did give it a good go.
4 born stars out of 5.
