This is the 49th year of my association with radio (my first broadcast as a school kid included). This World Radio Day while looking back at my journey, I asked myself what kept me going!! I am reminded of two moving incidents.
Very early in my career when television had already started pushing radio to the margins in India, I was interviewing some school children about their preferences between radio and television. All except one little girl said " television". A curious l asked her " but why?" Pat came the reply "it gives better picture". It was so moving an answer that whatever little doubt I had in my mind for having chosen a career in radio over television vanished completely.
Again, around midyears of my career during another interview a congenitally visually challenged boy whose vision could not be restored even after a cornea grafting told me that he got his vision back when his uncle gifted him a radio -through it he could see everything and he had no regrets in life. That was the second time, I felt vindicated and proud of my career choice. This World Radio Day, I only say long live radio and continue to bring better picture in the lives of people.
